I. Standards
Recognize and name all uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
CC.1.1.K.D Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding
words.
II. Prerequisites
Students should be able to sit and participate during instruction by raising hand when
they want to speak.
IV. Objective
At the end of the lesson, Students will be able to recognize the capital and lower case
letter Pp and the letter sound.
V. Instructional Procedures
Before: The teacher will review with the students the letter Nn and the sound it makes.
She will also review the letter Mm, Ss, Rr, Tt, Nn and the sounds it makes. We will say
goodbye to the letter Nn puppet friend.
Step one: The teacher will remind the students that when we learn a new letter we will
review the alphabet. The teacher will have The Alphabet Song displayed from the big
book of rhymes and poems. The class will sing the alphabet song together. Then the
teacher will introduce the new letter Pp puppet friend. The teacher will show the students,
which letter is the capital and which is the lower case letter Pp. Next, the teacher will
pull out the words from a bag that start with the letter Pp and a few other cards that dont.
While she brings out the cards and holds them up she will say the word and have the
students decide if the word has the Pp sound or not. The students will stick their thumbs
up if it has the Pp sound or say no.
Step two: The teacher will show the students the practice page 11. She will tell them
student to write their name at the top. Then she will go through each picture tell the
students what the picture is, and have them determine if the Pp sound comes in the
beginning of the word or the end of the word. She will use hand motions for the
beginning or ending sound. She will write the letter Nn in the correct spot to model for
the children. The children will go to their seats to work on their worksheet. When they
are done they can color on the back.
VII. Assessment
The teacher will be assessing the students for understanding through informal
observations. She will be looking for participation and focus. During the practice page
activity, she will be formally assessing the students for understanding of beginning and
ending sounds.
VIII. Accommodations
For ELL students and others, the teacher use pictures to help with word recognition and
to help reinforce the letter sounds. If students are not confortable speaking, the teacher
will encourage the child to use hand motions or head motions.

The teacher will reflect on how the lesson went and on how the students responded. Were
they paying attention and engaged? If not, what can I do differently next time? If all
went well, then she will continue doing the lesson in this manner.
