Retiro, el patagnico Jorge Leandro Cols
vuelve con su primera ficcin, luego de su
ltimo documental Los pibes (30 Festival).
Adaptacin de la novela de Flix Bruzzone,
Barrefondo sigue los pasos taciturnos de Tavo,
un piletero que trabaja en un country del
Conurbano (sacudido por tentaciones, de
dinero y venganza) y narra con inteligencia
y esquivando trazos gruesos una historia
que se anima a entrar en terrenos del gnero
y exponer algunos ritos conocidos de la
anatoma policial y criminal.
Cuando le la novela sent que haba
muchos elementos con gran potencial
cinematogrfico, cuenta Cols. Su
protagonista, la forma en que hablaba, la
atmsfera que atravesaba todo el relato,
ciertas ambigedades morales Todos
esos elementos que aparecan claramente
filtrados desde la mirada de lo real
componan un mundo muy atractivo y a la
vez posible de trasladar a la pantalla en mi
primera pelcula de ficcin. El paso a la ficcin
fue menos un salto que una ampliacin del
espectro. Dira que es una pelcula de cruces,
asegura el director. En cierto sentido, cruza
las pelculas de personajes y atmsferas con
las pelculas de gnero, ya que hay una trama
que tiene que ver con lo policial. Cruza el cine
de ficcin con un relato muy construido, con
algunos elementos de puesta en escena que
tienen ms que ver con el cine documental.
Incluso cruza a travs de la mayora de los
personajes algunos lmites morales que
podran llegar a incomodar a quienes tengan
una idea un poco ms maniquea del bien y
el mal.

Referente del cine experimental argentino
en Super 8 y uno de los cineastas ms
prolficos de su generacin, Ernesto Baca
presenta una historia en primera persona
con elementos autobiogrficos y un relato
(muy) ficcional sobre el fin de la historia
(del cine), en el que aparece como un
cientfico que intenta realizar el Proyecto
argenta: la primera pelcula virgen de
industria nacional, y un soporte que le
permita seguir filmando a contracorriente
del avance digital.
Tena que contar el final de la historia del
cine, de una parte, describe Baca. Una
que nadie parece haber visto, un cambio
de tecnologa que implic un cambio
de paradigma, al menos para los que
venimos del siglo pasado. Los tiempos se
aceleran y todo debe ser instantneo, el
valor del tiempo se mide de acuerdo con
su rendimiento, y as fue que se descart
una tecnologa que empleaba gente y una
concepcin diferente de sus pelculas,
dice convencido. Y ejemplifica: Pareciera
que esta evolucin de las herramientas
audiovisuales contribuye a su propia
desintegracin, como una serpiente que se
come su propia cola.
Segn el director de Samoa (2005) y
Vrindavana (2010), la curva del tiempo ha
devuelto al cine al inicio. Hoy los dispositivos
mviles son la evolucin del kinetoscopio, y
Netflix reemplaza a las salas de cine. Estamos
condenados a aceptar lo que nos cuenta
una pantalla como una verdad, y las cosas
seguirn as mientras que no tengamos
que salir de nuestro crculo de confort para
comprobar cmo son realmente.

Winner of the Argentine Competition of the
23rd Festival with his first feature Retiro Shelter,
Patagonian filmmaker Jorge Leandro Cols
returns with his first fiction, a follow-up to his
latest documentary The Football Boys (30th
Festival). An adaptation of Flix Bruzzones novel,
Pool Sweeper follows the taciturn footsteps of
Tavo, a pool boy who works in a gated community
in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, affected by
temptation, money and revenge. The film depicts
with intelligence, and avoiding exaggeration, a
story that dares to venture into genre territory
and expose some well-known rites of both
police and criminal anatomy.When I read the
novel I felt there were many elements that had
great cinematic potential, says Cols. Its main
character, the way he talked, the atmosphere
of the entire story, certain moral ambiguities
All of those elements that seemed to be clearly
filtered through a realistic eye made up for a
very attractive universe that was also possible
to translate to the screen in my first fiction film.
Going out for fiction was less a leap than an
expansion of the spectrum. I would say that its
a film about crossings, the director states. In a
certain way, it takes a cinema driven by characters
and atmospheres and mixes it with genre films,
because there is a plot related to the crime genre.
It crosses fiction cinema with a built-up story
with elements from the setting that have more
to do with documentary cinema. It even crosses
through most of its characters some moral
boundaries that could discomfort those who have
a somewhat more simplistic idea of good and evil.

One of the pillars of Argentine experimental
film in Super 8 and one of the most prolific
filmmakers of his generation, Ernesto
Baca presents a first-person tale with
autobiographical elements and a (very)
fictional story about the end of (film) history, in
which he plays a scientist trying to accomplish
the Argenta Project, the first film stock to be
manufactured locally a format that would
allow him to continue filming against the
advance of digital.
I had to tell the end of film history, of a part of
it, Baca describes. One that no one seems to
have seen, a change in technology that meant
a change of paradigm, at least to those of us
who come from last century. Time flies, and
everything must be instant, the value of time is
measured in accordance to its capacity, and this
way, a technology that employed people and a
different conception of films was discarded, he
says, convinced, and exemplifies, It seems like
this evolution of audiovisual tools contributes
to its own disintegration, like a serpent biting
its own tail.
According to the director of Samoa (2005) and
Vrindavana (2010), the curve of time has taken
cinema back to its beginnings. Today, mobile
devices are the evolution of the kinetoscope,
and Netflix replaces the theaters. We are
condemned to accept what a screen states to be
the truth, and things will go on like this until
we are able to step out of our comfort zone and
see how things are.

Don Rome es un hombre melanclico que atraviesa su
vida sumergido en un estado de confusin permanente.
Entregado al efecto anestsico del alcohol, el ex pescador
se revuelca entre los recuerdos que le confirman la
dimensin de su soledad. El cuarto largometraje de
Rubn Imaz Castro, director de la premiada Familia
tortuga (2006) e invitado a esta edicin del Festival, est
basado en la historia de Rudesindo Cantarell, quien en
los aos 60 descubri el pozo petrolero ms importante
de Mxico y el sexto del mundo, pero que muri
abandonado, alcohlico y repudiado por su comunidad.

los ltimos das de un hombre que prefiere vivir con
fantasmas antes que sentirse totalmente solo.

Don Rome is a melancholic man who walks through
the crumbs of his life submerged in a state of permanent
confusion. Having surrendered to the anesthetic effects of
alcohol, the ex-fisherman wallows in the memories that
confirm the dimensions of his solitude. This fourth film by
Ruben Imaz Castro director of the award-winning Familia
tortuga (2006) and a guest at this edition of the festival
is based on the life of Rudesindo Cantarell, who in the 1960s
discovered the most important oil well in Mexico and the
sixth in the world and yet died an alcoholic, neglected and
condemned by his community. A co-production between
Mexico, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, it is a sensory
drama about the final days of a man who chooses to live with
ghosts rather than feel completely alone.

Thelma Wajib

El despertar sexual y la liberacin adolescente
como una fuerza sobrenatural capaz
de consecuencias tan intensas como
devastadoras es un tpico que parece estar
siempre en expansin y que cuenta con
ttulos tan arrolladores como Carrie de Brian
De Palma. Para su cuarta pelcula la anterior
fue Louder Than Bombs, protagonizada por
Gabriel Byrne e Isabelle Huppert, el director
noruego Joachim Trier utiliza la calma y un
estilizado escenario nrdico para construir
una idea de terror adolescente hecho de puro
pavor existencial. A Thelma la conocemos
cuando es solo una nia en un pueblo remoto
de Noruega, de caza con su padre. Cuando
este apunta su rifle secreta y brevemente
hacia su hija, un gesto alerta sobre el peligro
que acecha. Ya convertida en estudiante
universitaria, Thelma llega a Oslo alejndose
de un ambiente religiosamente represivo, e
intentando aclimatarse a un mundo del que
no logra sentirse parte. Pero un da conoce
a Anja, una clida y suelta compaera
que despertar emociones que la tmida
protagonista no se animar a reconocer
debido a su crianza religiosa, pero tambin
porque, en el fondo, Thelma sabe que pueden
ser el disparador de fuerzas sobrenaturales
oscuras y potencialmente mortales que
podran despedazar a cualquiera. Thelma
expone la condicin humana con un
elemento sobrenatural que pone en juego
algo con lo que todos podemos relacionarnos.
Es una nueva versin del terror corporal, pero
tambin es una historia de amor.

Pocos directores tienen en su haber tantos
rcords como la directora Annemarie Jacir,
nacida en Bethlehem (una pequea ciudad
ubicada a unos 10 km de Jerusalem), criada
en Arabia Saudita y educada en Nueva York.
Su cortometraje Like Twenty Impossibles fue el
primero realizado por un ciudadano palestino
en ser seleccionado para el Festival de Cannes,
y su pera prima, Salt of This Sea (2008), fue la
primera pelcula dirigida por una mujer de
aquella nacin. Wajib, su tercer largometraje,
compiti en Locarno por el Leopardo de Oro y
se llev cuatro galardones (entre ellos, el Don
Quixote Award que otorga la International
Federation of Film Societies); adems de
obtener Mencin de Honor y premio del Jurado
del Festival de Londres. En esta oportunidad,
la realizadora pone el foco en una reunin
familiar en la bblica Nazareth poblada en su
mayora por palestinos cristianos. Con una
aguda crtica poltica, se adentra en una regin
en conflicto constante desde la perspectiva
de un padre divorciado y profesor de escuela
sesentn, quien pronto vivir solo cuando se
case su hija. Shadi, su hijo arquitecto, llega
de Roma luego de aos en el extranjero para
ayudar a su padre. Mientras el distanciado
do interpretado por Mohammad y Saleh
Bakri, padre e hijo en la vida real pasan el da
juntos, los detalles tensos de su relacin llegan
a un punto lgido, y el corto viaje de Shadi se
convierte en una oportunidad para confrontar a
su padre y el difcil presente de su pas.

Sexual awakening and adolescent liberation
as a supernatural force capable of resulting in
consequences both intense and devastating is
an ever-expanding topic with titles as irresistible
as Brian De Palmas Carrie. For his fourth film
the previous one was Louder Than Bombs,
starring Gabriel Byrne and Isabelle Huppert,
Norwegian director Joachim Trier uses a calm
and a stylized Nordic setting in order to build
an idea of teen terror that is pure existential
dread. We meet Thelma when she is just a child,
in a remote Norwegian town, hunting with her
father. When he briefly and secretly points his
rifle at his daughter, a gesture alerts about the
danger that lurks. Now a university student,
Thelma goes to Oslo distancing herself from a
religiously repressive environment, and trying
to acclimatize herself to a world to which she
does not feel like she belongs. However, one
day she meets Anja, a warm and much more
relaxed companion, who awakens in Thelma
emotions that the shy young woman does not
dare to recognize, due in part due to her religious
upbringing, but also because, deep down,
Thelma knows that they could be trigger dark
and potentially deadly supernatural forces that,
just like love, can tear anyone apart. Thelma
exposes human condition with a supernatural
element that brings into play something we can
all relate to. Its a new version of bodily horror, but
its also a love story.

Few filmmakers hold as many records as
director Annemarie Jacir, born in Bethlehem
(a small city located about 10 km away

a Palestinian director to be selected at the
Cannes Film Festival, and her debut feature-
length film Salt of This Sea (2008) was the

nation. Wajib, her third film, competed for the
Golden Leopard at Locarno and grabbed four
awards (among them, the Don Quixote Award
given by the International Federation of Film
Societies). I also won a mention of honor and
the Jury prize at the London Film Festival. This
time, the director focuses on a family reunion
in the biblical Nazareth populated mainly by
Christian Palestinians. With a sharp political
critique, she goes deep into a region in constant
turmoil from the perspective of a divorced father
and schoolteacher in his mid-60s, who will soon
be living alone after his daughters wedding
in one month. Shadi, his architect son, arrives
from Rome to help his father out after years of
living abroad. As the estranged pair played by
real-life father and son Mohammad and Saleh
Bakri spend the day together, the tense details
of their relationship come to a head, and Shadis
short trip turns into an opportunity to confront
his father and his countrys troubled present.

El director y antroplogo estadounidense radicado
en Colombia Chris Gude (su pera prima, Mambo cool,
compiti aqu, en esta seccin, en 2013) recorre La Guajira,
una pennsula en la frontera con Venezuela, tras los
pasos de un marinero y un contrabandista que recorren
zonas que estn al margen de las reglas del Estado. Con
un pulso paciente e inmersivo en la narracin, la pelcula
se abre camino entre los paisajes desolados como lo
hacen estos dos hombres en su supervivencia. Ms
all del carcter ilegal de sus actividades comerciales,
estos hombres y las personas que los rodean habitan
y se desplazan por espacios en los que no terminaron
de imponerse las sucesivas prcticas y tendencias
econmicas de cada pas. Un discurso de Hugo Chvez
que cita a Simn Bolvar remite a esa sensacin.
Colombia-based director and anthropologist Chris Gude
whose first feature, Mango Cool, competed here, in this
same section, in 2013 travels to La Guajira, a peninsula on
the frontier with Venezuela, following the footsteps of a sailor
and a smuggler who go through isolated ports and deserted
lands at the edges of the rules of State. With a patient pulse
and an immersive storytelling, the film makes its way through
desolate landscapes in the same way these two men do as a
way to survive. Beyond the illegal nature of their business, these
men and the people around them inhabit and move through
areas where the subsequent economic practices and tendencies
of each nation have not yet been fully implemented, as if
they found themselves a few steps behind the history of their
countries. A speech by Hugo Chavez quoting Simon Bolivar
refers us to that feeling.

Hugo Fattoruso, uno de los gigantes de la msica uruguaya, llega a la pantalla grande
en esta edicin del Festival, con un documental que sigue las andanzas de una leyenda
viviente.
Hugo Fattoruso, one of the giants of Uruguayan music, comes to the big screen of this edition of
the Festival with a documentary that follows the adventures of a living legend.
Hugo Fattoruso tiene eso que dicho a los
cuatro vientos puede ser un lugar comn,
pero que se comprueba con escucharlo
hablar, con ver cmo interacta con los
suyos en el escenario, o con descubrir
sus ojos emocionados, en silencio: la
humildad de los grandes. Esa es apenas
una de las afirmaciones una de las ms
importantes que se revelan en Fattoruso,
el bellsimo documental dirigido por
Santiago Bednarik que est presentndose
en esta edicin del Festival. Ah tambin
se confirman otras cuestiones; desde
aquella que promueve al msico uruguayo
como uno de los fundadores del rock en
Latinoamrica y que a esta altura incomoda
al propio Fattoruso hasta su estatus de gur
contemporneo, traducido en las ganas
de otros genios a su altura (Chico Buarque,
Milton Nascimento, Jaime Roos) que se
F.J. OSSANG
Con solo cinco pelculas en ms de treinta
aos (su debut, LAffaire des divisions Morituri,
se estren en 1985), el director francs F.J.
Ossang responde a todas las particularidades
que lo erigen como un artista de culto, tanto
en su pas como en el resto del mundo.
Su nimo contracultural excede el cine,
y lo ubica a principio de los 80 en pleno
post punk. Su relacin con la escena de la
msica industrial incluye nombres como
Cabaret Voltaire y Throbbing Gristle, que
musicalizaron sus primeros cortos, y adems
particip de manera activa como msico
al formar la banda punk Messagero Killer
Boy. Su nueva pelcula, 9 Fingers, presentada
en esta edicin del Festival y ganadora
del premio a Mejor Director en Locarno,
expone, una vez ms, las ideas estticas en
las que se basa su resistencia: filmada en
35 mm, en blanco y negro (el nico de sus

desviven por trabajar con l y contagiarse
de su talento y generosidad. Y la pelcula
explica los porqus, mientras recorre la
aventura musical de Fattoruso, primero
con su familia, luego persiguindolo en sus
viajes vanguardistas en los Estados Unidos
(con la banda OPA como faro ineludible),
su estada en Brasil y su regreso triunfal a su
Uruguay natal, donde fue recibido como un
hroe nacional de la cultura popular. Y esa
es la clave: darse cuenta de que estamos en
presencia de una figura como pocas en la
msica contempornea. Y que tenemos la
oportunidad de conocerlo y escucharlo.

de 1997, que tiene a Joe Strummer, de The
Clash, como protagonista), propone una
aventura en mar y tierra en la que hace gala
de su gusto por el expresionismo, el film
noir, la literatura pulp, el cmic y el humor
surrealista.
Todo arranca una noche en una estacin
de tren abandonada, cuando un hombre
es interpelado por la polica. Ante esto
comienza a correr, y en el camino se topa
con un hombre herido, de quien hereda
una fortuna. A partir de ah es perseguido
por una pandilla que lo convertir primero
en rehn, y luego en cmplice de un robo.
Con ese disparador, F.J. Ossang propone
otro de sus trips estilizados, cuyas imgenes
traducen toda la potencia del cine.

Hugo Fattoruso has that thing that, when
said out loud, could sound clichd, but you can
confirm once you hear him talk, once you see
the way he interacts with his circle onstage,
or once you discover his eyes, moved and in
silence the humbleness of the greats. That is
just one of the affirmations one of the most
important ones revealed in Fattoruso, the
beautiful documentary directed by Santiago
Bednarik thats being screened at this edition
of the Festival. There, other questions are also
confirmed; from that which promotes the
Uruguayan musician as one of the founders of
Latin American rock -and that, at this point,
makes Fattoruso himself uncomfortable to
his status of contemporary guru, translated
in the willingness from other geniuses of his

Despus de un paso ms que celebrado (y premiado, claro) por el Festival de
Locarno, F.J. Ossang presenta en Mar del Plata 9 Fingers, una aventura tan os-
cura como surrealista.
After his celebrated (and awarded, of course) visit to the Locarno Film Festival, F.J.
Ossang brings to Mar del Plata 9 Fingers, an adventure as dark as it is surreal.
With only five films directed in more than thirty
years (his debut, The Case of the Morituri
Divisions, was released in 1985), French director
F.J. Ossang responds to all the peculiarities that
turn him into a cult artist in his own country as
well as abroad. His countercultural spirit exceeds
cinema, and drove him to the midst of post-
punk back in the early80s. His relation with the
industrial music scene includes such names as
Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, whose
music was heard in his first short films, and he
also played an active role as a musician when he
formed the punk band Messagero Killer Boy. His
latest film, 9 Fingers, presented at this edition of
the festival and winner of the Best Director award
in Locarno, exposes once again the aesthetic ideas
he turned into the basis of his resistance: the film,
stature (Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento,
Jaime Roos) that go out of their ways to work
with him and enjoy his talent and generosity.
And the film explains why and goes over
Fattorusos musical adventure, first with his
family, later, joining him in his avant-garde
trips across the US (with the band OPA as an
inescapable beacon), his time in Brazil and
his triumphant return to his native Uruguay,
where he has received as a national hero of
popular culture. And that is the key: realizing
that were in the presence of a figure like few
others in contemporary music. And that we
have the chance of meeting him and listening
to him.

in color is Docteur Chance, from 1997, starring
The Clashs Joe Strummer), proposes an adventure
across earth and sea, in which he shows off his love
for expressionism, film noir, pulp literature, comic
books and surrealistic humor.
It all starts one night at an abandoned train
station, when a man gets detained by the police.
He starts running, and on his way he bumps into
a wounded man, from whom he will inherit a
fortune. A mob gang that turns him, first, into
a hostage, and, later, into their accomplice in a
robbery, also chases him. With this starting point,
F.J. Ossang lays out another of his stylized trips,
whose images translate all the power of cinema.

Qu hacemos con la empata? Qu Alemania, y le pregunt qu haba hecho. Y
hacemos con el amor? Qu cuerpos son
habitables y qu cuerpos no son habitables?
Qu amores se pueden vivir y qu amores
no se pueden vivir? Y quin dijo qu cuerpos
son inhabitables? Quin dijo qu amores
son inconquistables?. Pocos invitados al
Festival han trado preguntas tan pertinentes
como Daniela Vega, la actriz trans que
protagoniza Una mujer fantstica, el film del
chileno Sebastin Lelio que se llev el Oso de
Plata a Mejor Guion y el Premio Teddy en la
ltima edicin del Festival de Berln, y ahora
se suma a la Competencia Latinoamericana
de esta edicin.
Marina, el personaje de Daniela, es una
mesera y cantante de pera que, luego de
la muerte de su amante Orlando, enfrentar
el maltrato y la hostilidad de la familia de su
novio, que la ve como un monstruo y no le
permitir hacer el duelo de su amor perdido.

ya se menciona en importantes medios
de Estados Unidos como Indiewire por las
predicciones a las nominaciones al Oscar
2018. Ser Daniela la primera actriz trans en
ser nominada al Oscar?
Su camino para llegar a ese lugar fue,
tambin, una sorpresa, ya que, segn relat
al pblico de Mar del Plata, su participacin
inicial era como una colaboradora.
Fueron como un ao y medio, dos aos
de conversaciones, sin que supiera que
Sebastin iba a crear este personaje para
m, porque cuando entr en el proyecto era
solamente una consultora. Yo le contaba a l
acerca del mundo trans, de la literatura, de
los personajes, de la gente, y mi propia visin
de la vida, del gnero, de la masculinidad, de
la femineidad, etctera, relata Daniela. Y un
da, cerca de fin de ao, me envi un guion a
mi casa. Y ah me enter, leyndolo, de que
el protagonista no era Orlando sino Marina,
y que l quera que yo fuese la protagonista

surgi Una mujer fantstica.
Lelio, uno de los directores ms consolidados
de Chile, acaba de estrenar Disobedience, su
primera pelcula hablada en ingls, en el
Festival de Toronto, y ya haba mostrado
con Gloria su talento para retratar mujeres
hermosamente empoderadas. Para lograr
una frmula similar en Una mujer fantstica,
cuenta Daniela, la clave fue la intimidad.
Yo llegu cuando la pelcula era una idea.
Y con el director empezamos a trabajar
acerca de cmo hacer un personaje como
el de Marina, que tuviera esa complejidad,
esas capas emocionales una debajo de la
otra, pero sutilmente incorporadas. Fue
un proceso largo de un ao y medio, en el
que con Sebastin nos hicimos amigos y
nos conocimos ntimamente. Yo creo que
esa intimidad artstica es muy importante
para generar un personaje con esas
caractersticas.
La visibilidad internacional de la pelcula
tuvo un efecto en la situacin poltica del
colectivo trans de Chile.Signific una especie
de revisin de lo que estbamos haciendo
all pero, como buen pas latinoamericano,
avanzamos lento y de acuerdo con lo que
vamos viendo en otros lugares. En Chile
hay una discusin eterna acerca de la Ley
de Identidad de Gnero que an no est
aprobada, y que sigue siendo revisada. Y
eso indica que el crecimiento es casi siempre
econmico, muy poco cultural, y ni hablar
en trminos de derechos humanos. Lo que
la pelcula intenta hacer, ms que abrir una
puerta, es mostrarte dnde est esa puerta.

Few Festival guests have brought such
pertinent questions as Daniela Vega, the
trans actress who stars in A Fantastic
Woman, the film by Chilean director
Sebastin Lelio, a winner of the Silver Bear for
Best Script and the Teddy Award at the last
edition of the Berlin Film Festival, and now
an entry in the Latin American Competition
of this edition of the Festival.
Danielas character Marina is a waitress and
opera singer who, after the death of her lover
Orlando, will suffer the mistreatment and
hostility of her boyfriends family, who sees
her as a monster and wont let her mourn her
lost love in peace.
The absolute star of the film, Daniela
surprised audiences and critics, to the point
that her name is already mentioned in
important US film outlets like Indiewire
in their predictions for the 2018 Oscars.
Will Daniela be the first trans actress to be
nominated for an Oscar?
Her road to that role was also a surprise, since,
as she told the Mar del Plata audiences, she
originally joined in as a collaborator. It was
a year and a half, two years of conversations.
It was conversation after conversation,
without me knowing that Sebastin would
create this character for me, because when
I joined the project I was just a consultant.
I told him about the trans world, literature,
characters, people, and my own vision of
life, gender, masculinity, femininity, etc.,
she says. And one day close to New Years
Eve, he sent me a script home. And there, I
find out reading that the leading role wasnt
Orlando, but Marina, and that he wanted
me to star in the film. I finished reading the
script and didnt understand anything. One
day I thought it was one thing and the next
it was a completely different thing. I called
Sebastin to Germany, and asked him what
made a film for you. And I said: I think youre
completely crazy, because I wont be able to
do all this you are asking in the script. His
answer was: I believe you can and we are
going to give it a shot. I said ok, well talk. I
grabbed my purse and went out to party for
three days, and after my hangover cooled
off, we started working. And that is how A
Fantastic Woman came to be.
One of Chiles most established filmmakers
(he recently premiered his English language
debut Disobedience in Toronto), Lelio had
already shown with Gloria his unique
talent for depicting beautifully empowered
women. To achieve a similar formula the key
was intimacy, according to Daniela. I came
in when the film was an idea, she remembers.
And we started working with the director on
how to bring that complexity to a character
like Marina, with those emotional layers one
below the other, but subtly incorporated.
It was a long process of a year and a half, in
which Sebastin and I became friends and
grew intimate. I believe that artistic intimacy
is very important to create a character with
those features.
The films international visibility had an
effect on the political situation of the trans
collective in Chile, according to Daniela. It
brought a sort of revision of what we were
doing in Chile, but as it happens in any
Latin American country, we move slowly
and following what we observe in other
places. In Chile there is an endless debate
about the Gender Identity Law, which hasnt
been sanctioned, and it is still under review.
And that indicates that growth is almost
economic, very little cultural, and not one
bit in terms if human rights. What the film
aims to do is not so much opening a door, but
showing you where that door is.

esta pelcula?
Chris, mi coguionista, y yo sabamos que
queramos ambientar la pelcula en Pars
y empezamos a discutir acerca de todos
esos directores extranjeros que se fueron a
esa ciudad e hicieron pelculas erticas ah:
Zulawski, Borowczyk, Bertolucci y Polanski.
Tambin sabamos que queramos que
Lindsay protagonizara la pelcula. La idea de
que una mujer tuviera un profundo amour
fou no correspondido con un francs nos
atrajo inmediatamente.
Thirst Street se ve un poco ms artificial
que tus pelculas anteriores, con una
imagen digital que va hacia terrenos ms
expresionistas. Cul fue tu bsqueda en
trminos de fotografa?
La protagonista est enamorada de las
pelculas antiguas. Saba que quera que
esta pelcula tuviera algo que la remontara
a los melodramas con los que yo estaba
obsesionado cuando empez a gustarme

Es ms que claro que la primera secuencia
de The Villainess, tercer largometraje de Jung
Byung-gil luego del documental Action
Boys, sobre dobles de riesgo de la industria
surcoreana, y la ficcin Confessions of Murder, va
a pasar a la historia: son ocho minutos y medio
de una masacre espectacular perpetrada por
nuestra herona, Sook-hee, coreografiados con
maestra. Pero a Sook-hee la vemos recin a
los cinco minutos de empezada la escena, ya
que todo lo que viene antes est filmado en
subjetiva, como suele verse en los videojuegos.
Esta presentacin tarda del personaje en
carne y hueso sucede en el momento justo, o
sea, cuando Sook-hee se da contra un espejo.
Pero Jung no para aqu: toda The Villainess est

con su voz en mente. Creo que le llev una
media hora grabar todas sus lneas. Capt el
tono inmediatamente.
Investigaste pelculas con temas similares
(la obsesin, la locura) para inspirarte?
Cules son tus favoritas?
S, vimos muchas, muchas pelculas. Entre
mis favoritas estn Una mujer de la vida, Bad
Timing, Forest for the Trees, Perversa luna de hiel
y En un ao de trece lunas.

Its pretty clear that the first sequence in , Jung
Byung-gils third feature following Action Boys,
a documentary about South Korean stuntmen,
and the fiction Confessions of Murder will
go down in history: it features eight-and-a-
half minutes of a spectacular, masterfully
choreographed massacre perpetrated by our
heroine, Sook-hee. But we dont get to see Sook-
hee until five minutes after the scene started,
because everything that came before was a POV
shot, as though it were a video game. This belated
character introduction (in the flesh, at least)
happens at the most exact of times that is, when
Sook-hee hits a mirror. But Jung doesnt stop here:
the entire film is filled with great visual ideas
theres also a simultaneous bike chase/katana
fight as well as surprises, and even though
its an all-out action movie, it also includes a
mini-romcom that focuses the beginning of the
relationship between Sook-hee and her neighbor
Hyun-soo.

Chris, my co-writer, and I knew that we wanted
to set the movie in Paris and we started discussing Anjelica Hustons voice over provides the film
