En dos pelculas bien diferentes (opuestas?, complementarias?), Hong
Sang-soo posa la cmara sobre su gran musa: Kim Min-hee. Ella, por supues-
to, llena la pantalla de luz.
Claires Camera
La sola presencia de Kim Min-hee debera
justificar por s sola la existencia de
cualquier pelcula, no solo las de Hong
Sang-soo (un Festival hecho enteramente
con pelculas protagonizadas por la actriz
de The Handmaiden tampoco sera una
mala idea, no?). Pero en esta breve y
bastante encantadora pelcula, una gran
parte de la crtica internacional no supo o
no quiso ver, sin embargo, algo ms que
un simple divertimento. Quizs haya sido
un prejuicio con respecto a sus condiciones
de produccin: Claires Camera fue filmada
en Cannes en unos pocos das, mientras
suceda el festival ms importante del
mundo, y estrenada un ao despus
en el mismo evento. Como sea, en un
mundo cada vez ms oscuro y tenebroso,
una pelcula bella, concisa y luminosa
pareciera no merecer ser tomada en serio.
En su trama, la joven asistente de una
empresa dedicada a la venta internacional
de pelculas es despedida de su trabajo a
causa de una supuesta infidelidad, lo que
la llevar a recorrer sin destino las calles
y escenarios tpicos de la ciudad. Es ah
donde conocer a Claire, una profesora de
msica interpretada por otra musa del
cine contemporneo: Isabelle Huppert
que pasea por la ciudad a la que lleg
acompaando a una amiga cineasta
cuya pelcula es parte del festival. Claire
y su cmara, sin saberlo, registrarn a los
protagonistas de estos amores cruzados,
con el trasfondo de una ciudad balnearia
que, ao tras ao, se ve invadida por un
ruidoso festival de cine. Si te saco una
foto, ya nunca sers la misma persona,
dice Claire en un momento. Algo parecido
sucede cuando ves una pelcula de Hong.

The very presence of Kim Min-hee should be
enough to justify the existence of any film,
not only one by Hong Sang-soo (actually,
a whole festival made of films featuring
the star of The Handmaiden, wouldnt
be such a bad idea, wouldnt it?). However,
most critics werent able or didnt want
to see in Claires Camera something more
than simple entertainment. It may have
been the result of some prejudice regarding
the conditions in which the film was made:
Claires Camera was shot in a few days in
Cannes, during the most important film
festival in the world, and premiered there
one year later. Whatever the reason, in a
world as increasingly dark and gloomy as
this one, a beautiful, short, luminous film
sadly appears not to deserve to be taken
seriously.
In the film, a young assistant at a company
devoted to international film sales is fired
from her job due to a supposed infidelity,
which will lead her to aimlessly walking
the typical streets and sceneries of the city.
Thats where she will meet Clara, a music
professor played by another muse of
contemporary cinema: Isabelle Huppert
who walks through the town she arrived to
accompanying her best friend, a filmmaker
with a film in the festival. Without realizing
it, Claire and her camera will capture the
protagonists of those crossed loves, with the
backdrop of a small, beautiful coastal city
that, year after year, is invaded by a noisy
film festival. If I take a photo of you, you are
not the same person anymore, says Clara.

his camera on his great muse: Kim Min-hee. And she, of course, lights up the screen.

The Day After
Contracara de la luminosa Claires Camera,
El da despus est filmada en blanco y
negro en la ciudad de Sel durante el
crudo invierno coreano, y la mayora de
sus escasas escenas transcurren durante
la noche. La intensidad que atraviesan
algunas de sus secuencias (algo que,
sospechamos, la llev a ocupar un
lugar en la Seleccin Oficial en Cannes)
llaman la atencin en el cine de Hong
Sang-soo. No as su trama, otra variacin
sobre las relaciones maritales y las
infidelidades. El drama sigue a Areum,
una mujer que atraviesa el primer da
de trabajo en una pequea editorial. Su
jefe, Bongwan, tuvo como amante a la
mujer que ocupaba anteriormente ese
mismo puesto, a la que finalmente dej.
En una escena dramticamente opaca,
Bongwan desayuna con su esposa, que
lo desafa sospechando sus infidelidades,
mientras l permanece casi impvido. Los
recuerdos de la mujer a la que dej pesan
sobre l. Ese da la esposa de Bongwan
encuentra una nota de amor, irrumpe
en la oficina y confunde a Areum con
la otra mujer. El da despus est repleta
de peleas (a los gritos y golpes), llantos,
recriminaciones (justas y de las otras)
y discusiones, que parecen comentar
algunos datos recientes de la vida del
director. En un ao con tres pelculas
(todas protagonizadas por su musa Kim
Min-hee), Hong demuestra que su cine
no se detiene ante nada y que la ficcin,
a veces, puede servir para tratar de
entender la vida. O, al menos, reescribirla
como un triste cuento moral.

A flipside of the luminous Claires
Camera, The Day After was shot in black
and white in the city of Seoul during the
raw Korean winter, and most of its bare
scenes take place at night. The intensity
of some of its sequences (which we suspect
led to its becoming part of the Cannes
official selection) is quite rare for a Hong
Sang-soo film. Not so its plot: a variation
on marital relationships and infidelities.
The story follows Aerum, a woman on her
first day working in a small publishing
house. The woman who had that job
before her was a lover of Areums boss
Bongwan, who finally broke up with her.
In a dramatically dim scene Bongwan has
breakfast with her wife, who defies him
about infidelity, while he remains with
an almost blunt face. The memories of
the woman who left weigh down on him.
That day Bongwans wife finds a love note,
bursts into the office, and mistakes Areum
for the woman who left. Thus, The Day
After has plenty of fighting (with shouts
and blows), crying, recriminations (both
fair and otherwise) and arguments that
seem to comment on some recent events in
the directors life. In a year with three films
(all of them starring his muse Kim Min-
hee), Hong shows that his cinema stops at
nothing, and that fiction can sometimes be
useful for trying to understand life. Or, at
least, for rewriting it as a sad moral tale.

La pera prima de Ryu Seung-wan,
estrenada en 2000, tiene un origen
ms bien particular: en realidad est
compuesta por cuatro cortometrajes
realizados a lo largo de tres aos y
exhibidos originalmente de forma
independiente. Pero tampoco se trata de
una antologa ya que, si bien cada una
tiene su esttica particular, la historia que
narra es la misma en cuatro momentos
diferentes en la vida de sus protagonistas.
Y los cuatro cortos estn atravesados por
unas escenas de pelea de alto impacto,
pero no de manera convencional: en
lugar de las tpicas peleas coreografiadas
que tanto hemos visto en el cine oriental
de gnero, las de Die Bad son sucias, por
momentos casi imposibles, filmadas con
una cmara de mano inquieta pero que
nunca pierde de vista lo que sucede en
cuadro. Los quince minutos finales, un
montaje paralelo entre una pelea mano a
mano y otra entre decenas de personajes,
son especialmente notables en este
sentido, y difcilmente olvidables.
The origin of Ryu Seung-wans first feature
is very peculiar: released in 2000, the
film is actually made up of four different
short films that were shot over the course
of three years, and originally screened
independently from one another. But its
not an anthology, either, because even
though they are aesthetically different,
they all tell the same story at four different
periods in the characters lives. And the four
shorts feature high-impact fight scenes,
but not in a conventional way. Instead of
the excellently and neatly choreographed
fight scenes we see all the time in Asian
genre films, Die Bads fight scenes are raw,
often unbearable, and shot with a nervous
hand-held camera that nevertheless keeps
a constant eye on what is happening. The
final fifteen minutes, a montage between
a one-on-one fight and a fight between
dozens of characters, are especially
remarkable, and quite unforgettable.

muestras cada vez ms feroces, cada vez
ms inslitas de por qu es considerado
uno de los directores ms subversivos,
inquietos e imaginativos del cine japons.
Tokyo Vampire Hotel, su nueva locura
(versin resumida de una serie que el
director film para Amazon), transcurre
en un futuro inmediato, en el ao 2021,
cuando la realeza vamprica construye
un hotel con la intencin de alimentarse
de la sangre de sus huspedes. Al
mismo tiempo, dos clanes (los Drcula
y los Corvin) se pelean por una mujer
con caractersticas muy especiales. Ese
es solo el punto de partida para una
promesa de accin, humor delirante,
absurdo y muchsima sangre, un combo
de situaciones al que el director de Suicide
Club nos tiene acostumbrados aos tras
ao, y que har las delicias de los devotos
al cine de medianoche.
Practically an illustrious participant of
the Mar del Plata Film Festival, Japanese
director Sion Sono is present every year,
proving each time in a more ferocious and
outrageous way why he is considered to
be one of the most subversive, restless and
imaginative of Japanese director. Tokyo
Vampire Hotel, his new insanity (an
edited version of a series the director shot
for Amazon), takes place in an immediate
future the year 2021 when vampire
royalty builds a hotel with the intention
of feeding from the blood of its guests. At
the same time, two clans (the Draculas
and the Corvins) fight for a woman who
has very special features. This is just the
starting point for a promise of action,
delirious comedy, absurdity, and lots of
blood: a combo of situations the director of
Suicide Club delivers every year, and will
delight midnight-movie fans.

Outrage: Coda
A pura furia yakuza, Kitano se pone al frente y detrs de la cmara
para cerrar su triloga Outrage, que empez en 2010. Las expectativas
haban quedado altas luego de Outrage 2 (2012), y por supuesto que
el director supo encontrar la forma de estar a la altura. Luego de cinco
aos de haber sobrevivido a la guerra salvaje entre los clanes Sanno y
Hanabishi, Otomo se encuentra en un rol diferente del que ocupaba en
las esferas ms poderosas de la mafia. Ahora trabaja en Corea del Sur
para Mr. Chang y todo parece haberse relajado. Pero, por supuesto, nada
puede permanecer demasiado tranquilo durante mucho tiempo y un
incidente (mucho ms pequeo que sus consecuencias) es la chispa
que haca falta para que todo se descontrole, a fuerza de plomo y lucha.
Los proyectos de Chang se cruzan (no de una manera amable) con los
negocios del clan Hanabishi. En este nuevo contexto frente a viejos

With pure yakuza rage, Kitano puts himself in front of and behind the camera
in order to close his Outrage trilogy, which he started in 2010. The expectations
were high after Outrage 2 (2012), and of course the director was able to find
the way of living up to them. Five years after having survived the savage war
between the Sanno and Hanabishi clans, Otomo now plays a role that is
different than the one he had in the most powerful spheres of the mafia. He
now works in South Korea for Mr. Chang, and everything seems to have cooled
off. But, of course, nothing can remain this quiet for a long time, and chaos is
unleashed by an incident (a much smaller one than its actual consequences) that
brings an array of bullets and fighting. Changs own projects cross with those of
the Hanabishi clan, and not in a very nice way. In this new context, facing his old
acquaintances, Otomo can do nothing but return to Japan. Once there, he will
have to solve some unfinished business, once and for good. Shooting, blood and
violence are the condiments for one of those vertigo-filled movies through which
Takeshi Kitano moves with a Zen comfort.

pirada en sus populares libros. Antes de las funciones, se acercar a las salas
para conversar con el pblico y leer algunos de sus textos

books. Before the screenings, he will attend the theaters to chat with the audience and
read some of his texts.
Cmo surgi el personaje de Natacha?
Por qu crees que se convirti en este
fenmeno?
Fui profesor de msica durante aos en
escuelas primarias; los profesores vamos
a muchas escuelas, muchos salones,
trabajamos con chicos de lunes a viernes.
En segundo grado tena a una niita muy
simptica, pizpireta, y yo sola decir algo
como me voy a un lugar a hacer una cosa.
Una vez junt a esa chica con esta idea, y
desarroll esa conversacin. Me fui a vivir
a Mxico y cada vez que volva a Argentina
me decan que el cuento que haba escrito
a partir de esa experiencia lo usaban los
promotores del libro, que era El pulpo est
crudo, y que los chicos se rean. Por ese
feedback se me ocurri desarrollar ms
historias de Natacha. Aos despus conoc
los trabajos de filosofa para nios de
Matthew Lipman y me gust jugar con la
filosofa, el lenguaje, el humor. Y as fue
creciendo el mundo de Natacha: primero
cre a los paps y luego agregu un grupo
de varones que eran muy particulares.
Todo esto, libro a libro (hoy son nueve),
se fue dando como un equilibrio; as se
fue haciendo el contrapeso de personajes
hasta que ms tarde se descubri que
la mam de Natacha era as porque su
madre, la abuela, era un personaje todava
mayor. As se fue completando el cuadro:
las chicas con las que tienen la disputa, los
varones, los paps.
Cres que pelculas como Natacha pueden
abrir el camino para que se haga ms cine
infantil en Argentina?
Ojal Natacha abra primero su propio
camino; le deseo lo mejor a esta historia de
nios reales que tienen conflictos reales y los
resuelven como pueden hacerlo realmente.
Eso me gustara que tenga un buen destino.
Qu es lo que ms te gusta de la pelcula?
Lo que ms me gusta es que me sorprendi
encontrar a nios tan parecidos a los de las
escuelas en las que yo me inspir. Dio toda la
vuelta.

How was the character of Natacha
born? Why do you think she became the
phenomenon it is now?
I was a music teacher in elementary schools
for many years; teachers go to lots of schools,
to lots of classrooms, we work with kids
from Monday to Friday. At second grade, I
had a very lovable, lively girl, and used to
say something like, Im going somewhere to
do something. Once, I mixed this girl with
this idea, and developed that conversation. I
moved to Mexico and every time I returned to
Argentina they would tell me that the story
I had written based on that experience was
used by the promoters of the book, which was
El pulpo est crudo, and that kids laughed
with it. With that feedback, I thought of
developing more Natacha stories. Years later,
I discovered Matthew Lipmans work on
philosophy for children and I liked the idea
of playing with philosophy, language and
humor. This way, Natachas world continued
to grow first I created her parents, and
then I added a group of very peculiar boys.
All of this, book after book (they are nine,
so far), was like some kind of balance; then
a counterbalance in the characters was
made until later on it was discovered that
Natachas mom was like because her mother,
the girls grandmother, was an even bigger
character. The picture was completed that
way -the girls with whom they have the
dispute, the boys, the parents.
Do you believe films like Natacha can pave
the way for more childrens films to be
made in Argentina?
I hope Natacha paves its own way; I wish the
best for this story of real kids who have real
conflicts and solve them the way they really
can. I would like that to succeed.
What do you enjoy most about the film?
What I like the most is that I was surprised
to find children as similar to those school kids
that inspired me. It went all the way around.

Gastn Ugarte, el argentino que trabaja en Pixar, habla de su experiencia con
Coco, el nuevo ttulo del estudio en el que trabaj en pelculas como Wall-E, Va-
liente y Un gran dinosaurio.
Gastn Ugarte, the Argentinian working at Pixar, talks about his experience with Coco,
the new title from the studio where he worked on films like Wall-E, Brave and The
Good Dinosaur.
Cmo llegaste a un estudio tan
grande como Pixar?
Cuando me recib de la universidad
empec a trabajar en distintos estudios
de Nueva York. Empec haciendo
cortometrajes y despus consegu
trabajo en Sony Pictures para formar
parte del equipo de realizacin de Reyes
de las olas, su segunda pelcula animada.
Unos aos despus escuch por colegas
de Sony que Pixar Animation Studios
estaba buscando modeladores para
su siguiente pelcula original, que era
Wall-E. Arm un portfolio, lo mand
y me llamaron. Me entrevistaron a
las semanas, me llamaron de vuelta
y me ofrecieron trabajo; eso fue hace
ya diez aos. Empec como parte del
equipo de diseo de fondos con Wall-E,
Up, Valiente y un especial de Toy Story
para Halloween. Ya a partir de Un gran
dinosaurio comenc a tener un equipo a
cargo como supervisor de modelaje; en
Coco tengo la misma posicin. Fue un
reto muy lindo pero tom un perodo
de adaptacin. Al principio estaba
acostumbrado a ir a la oficina, modelar
todo el da e irme a mi casa. De repente
pas a estar en reuniones gran parte
del da y producir. Entonces me implic
mucha ms responsabilidad y tuve que
aprender a ser mentor, formar equipo,
buscar buena qumica entre colegas,
etctera.
De qu manera encaraste tu trabajo en
Coco?
Mi equipo es responsable de crear los
fondos de la pelcula, todo lo que no
es un personaje: desde las piedritas
hasta las flores y las montaas. En el
caso de Coco tuvimos que crear Santa
Cecilia, el mundo de los vivos y el
mundo de los muertos. Primero los
artistas armaron el arte conceptual
para empezar a darle ideas al director,
Lee Unkrich, sobre cmo podra verse
el mundo. Fue un desarrollo muy lento
en el cual fuimos buscando el look del
film. Bsicamente nosotros ayudamos
al director a encontrar lo que l quera;
le mostrbamos opciones y nos iba
diciendo cules de todas esas cosas le
servan. Por ejemplo, l quera que el
mundo de los muertos contrastara bien
con el de los vivos. Construimos Santa
Cecilia basndonos en ciudades de
Mxico bien chatas, donde predominan
los colores naturales, la luz natural,
mucho sol. Para el mundo de los
muertos el director quera contrastar la
planicidad de Santa Cecilia, y por eso es
una ciudad vertical donde predominan
las luces fras, artificiales, fluorescentes.
Qu aprendiste trabajando al lado
de Lee Unkrich?
Es el director con el que ms aprend. l
era editor, y eso hizo que se fijara en otros
aspectos fuera de lo que es la historia,
la composicin de los personajes y todo
lo que puede resultarles ms relevante
a los directores que vienen puramente
del mbito de la animacin. Lee es un
director muy completo, sabe un poco de
todo y siempre tiene algo para aportar.
Hay unas reuniones que se llaman
animation dailies, a las que asisten
bsicamente todos los supervisores de
cada departamento y los animadores
les muestran las distintas secuencias.
Lee siempre daba crticas sper
constructivas, y me impresionaba
mucho porque l, al venir del mbito
de la edicin, se enfrentaba a cracks de
la animacin y les ofreca un punto de
vista muy rico.
De qu forma se acercaron a la
historia que rodea a Coco y a la cultura
mexicana?
Sabamos que estbamos tocando
un tema sumamente delicado y muy
sentimental para el pueblo mexicano,
y Pixar contaba con que bamos a
tener que hacer mucha investigacin
previa. La base de nuestro trabajo
siempre es investigar acerca de lo
que vamos a contar, hacemos viajes
para empaparnos del tema. Con Coco

John Cameron Mitchell agranda su estatus de
culto con esta adaptacin de un relato breve
de Neil Gaiman, sazonando esta vez la ciencia

of its release, and De Palma received a Worst
Director nomination at the infamous Razzie
awards for this film which shouldnt sound

years after its release, such a reaction
seems inexplicable. Body Double starts
with a great film-within-a-film moment
that also serves as title sequence with the
vampire-like font. The credits are consistent
with the film being shot in the story (a
production from which the protagonist
will be fired a few minutes later, because
his claustrophobia doesnt allow him to
stay inside a coffin) but not with what we
will see later. Well, maybe it is, if we take
into consideration the vampirization of
other peoples work (as well as his own)
De Palma performs in all of his films and
especially in this one. Body Double is a
series of sequences that are pure cinema,
while also a film that allows itself to be both
elegant (those scenes where Craig Wassons
Scully follows Deborah Sheltons Gloria,
and the beautiful score by Pino Donaggio)
and brutal (the drill murder!), but always
maintaining that playful spirit we love so
much about De Palma.

logr algo mucho ms complejo. Se

habiendo surgido desde la periferia,
con una fuerte presencia de los ritmos
brasileos y originarios en sus lbumes
ms reconocidos, y supo reinventarse en
cada giro sonoro de su carrera, frente a
cada cambio abrupto de su alineacin y
superando aquellas trampas que pueden
destruir un legado artstico.
Sepultura Endurance sale a buscar sin
vueltas (pero con muchos detalles) los
pilares que sostuvieron y mantienen en
pie a semejante estructura: el material
de archivo est lleno de joyas poco vistas
de los primeros aos de la banda, los
testimonios son un desfile de voces
autorizadas (desde Lars Ulrich a Corey

Son pocas las pelculas que pueden definir su
argumento en unas pocas lneas, y muchas
menos las que consiguen seducir as al
espectador potencial. La espaola Matar a
Dios posee ambas caractersticas. Cuenta la
historia de una familia que en la fiesta de fin
de ao recibe la visita inesperada de un enano
linyera, que les afirma que es Dios, y que al
otro da la humanidad va a dejar de existir.
Imposible ignorarla. Y mucho ms si al entrar
en su mundo descubrimos el dato de que, de
esas pocas personas que asisten a esa cena,
debern elegirse dos que sern salvadas
por el inslito dios para que la raza tenga
posibilidades de subsistencia. Y ms todava
cuando la pelcula ofrece repetidas muestras
de (buen) humor desquiciado y negrsimo, y
una subida dosis de gore sangriento e ideas
visuales ingeniosas, que la colocan al lado de
los primeros pasos (se trata de un debut) de
gente como lex de la Iglesia o Javier Fesser.
Any band determined to stand out in
the metal scene needs to make a stand
with its presence, take the virtuosity of
its members to always expansible limits,
and develop both an iconic image and
an unmistakable style. But in the case of
Sepultura those goals seemed minimal, as
this is a band with more than 30 years of
unobjectionable relevance that achieved
something much more complex. They
became internationally popular having
come from the periphery, with a strong
presence of Brazilian and native rhythms
in their best-known albums. They also
knew how to reinvent themselves at every
change of sound in their career, in front of
every abrupt lineup change, and overcome
the kind of traps that could destroy an
artistic legacy.
Sepultura Endurance goes on a confident
and detailed search for the pillars that
held and still hold such a structure. The
archive footage is filled with rare gems
from their early years, and the testimonies
are a parade of authorized voices (from
Lars Ulrich to Corey Taylor) that depict
the evolution and influence of the band
without avoiding the most complicated
aspects of their metamorphoses. Also,
the film doesnt let a lot of time go by
without us enjoying Sepultura in all their
magnitude, at their rehearsals or ruling
over thousands of fans on the stage. Metal
was never the same after the appearance
of Sepultura, because Sepultura never
stopped renewing themselves.

Few films can define their plot in just a few
lines, and even less films succeed in seducing
potential viewers by doing so. Spanish film
To Kill God is one of them. It tells the story of a
family celebrating New Years Eve, who receives
the unexpected visit of a bum dwarf who claims
to be God, and tells them than humankind will
cease to exist the following day. No way you can
ignore that. Especially if, when entering this
world, we realize that two of the dinner guests
will be chosen and saved by this unlikely
god in order for humanity to have a chance of
surviving. And more especially, if the film offers
lots of derange, very black (and good) humor,
and a high dose of bloody gore with clever visual
ideas which locates the film alongside the early
steps (this is a debut) of people like lex de la

el funcionamiento de las instituciones,

invokes in his new film the memory of two
of his recent works: In Jackson Heights,

cocktail of ethnicities and cultures that
coexist in Queens, and At Berkeley, a
study of the functioning of the prestigious
Californian University. Delving deeper into
his ever-present interest for dissecting the
functioning of institutions, he discovers
in the intricacies of the New York Public
Library not just an example of applied ethics
at the service of the public, but also, and
above all, a meeting point for the different
sensibilities and realities that form the
multiethnic social fabric of that great city.
In a key moment of this documentary, an
architect specializing in the design of public
buildings rejects the concept of the library
