Dos ancianos y el vasto paisaje de los
cerros tucumanos esos a los que les cant
Yupanqui como escenografa nutren el
relato de La nostalgia del centauro, pelcula de
Nicols Torchinsky. Alba Rosa Daz y Juan
Armando Soria, los padres de una amiga
del director, protagonizan la pelcula y
transmiten una forma de vida que parece
felizmente detenida en el tiempo y lejos de
la vorgine propia de la era de una aldea
global recargada. Cuando piensa en por
qu decidi abordar esta historia, Nicols
cuenta: Todo comenz con un viaje a
Tucumn en bsqueda de locaciones para
un cortometraje. En ese viaje, mi amiga
Mirta Gloria Soria nos invit a pasar unos
das en la casa sus padres. Despus de varios
das de convivencia apareci la idea de hacer
una pelcula con ellos y lo conversamos.
Acordamos que la palabra que nos guiara
sera tradicin. Ambos estuvieron de
acuerdo y nos comprometimos a comenzar
tan pronto como nos fuera posible. Poco
tiempo despus ya estbamos inmersos
en un experimento que no sabamos hacia
dnde nos llevara pero con la intuicin de
que all podra haber una pelcula.
No es sencillo definir un film propio, ms
an con estas caractersticas: Creo que
es una pelcula que no tiene una lectura
unvoca, y no me gustara predisponer la
construccin de sentido, aclara el realizador.
En todo caso dira que se trata de una
mirada o un acercamiento a la tradicin
gauchesca, un compuesto de materiales
hbridos ficcionales y documentales
que proponen un encuentro entre lo que
permanece, lo que ya no ser ms, y cierta
imagen mtica o imaginaria de ese universo.

El mito de Buenos Aires como la Pars de
Sudamrica, una ciudad europea enclavada
en el Nuevo Mundo, est en el centro de la
historia que cuenta Luis Bernrdez en Los
Corroboradores ganadora de una Mencin
Especial en la competencia Work in Progress
del 30 Festival, as como la existencia de
una sociedad secreta que plane hacer
realidad ese proyecto de pas iluminista
propio de las ideas de la generacin del 80.
El punto de partida fue una antigua postal de
Buenos Aires con el sello del Busto de Jano,
que el director hall en San Telmo. Comenc
a investigar y la conclusin que iba sacando
era que copiar Pars, ms que un ideal, era
un plan, relata Bernrdez. Era un proyecto
de pas que persevera an hoy en nuestro
carcter aspiracional como sociedad.
Decid contar esta investigacin y reflexin
sobre nuestra identidad como sociedad e
individuos para esclarecerme tambin a m
mismo.
Definida por su director como un cruce
entre lo factible y su imaginario, que muta
de documental a thriller arquitectnico, Los
Corroboradores pone en jaque aquel sueo
decimonnico de la Pars del Plata. Era
un rgimen de fascinacin-subordinacin-
aspiracin-emulacin, describe el director.
Hoy el lazo se traslad a Nueva York o
Miami, y en ellos se actualiza hoy en da.
Buenos Aires fue, quiso ser, la Pars del Plata.
Pero una capital no hace a un pas. Menos la
emulacin edilicia o idiosincrtica. Hoy es un
componente imaginario, material y social
que no nos permite ser. Es la Pars del Plata
en la medida en que quiere ser otra y no
acepta ser lo que es.

An elderly couple and the vast landscape of the
Tucumn mountains those same ones Yupanqui
sang to fuel the story in Nicols Torchinskys
The Centaurs Nostalgia. Alba Rosa Daz and
Juan Armando Soria, the parents of a friend
of the director, star in this film and transmit a
way of life that happily seems to exist in a still
time, far from the typical whirlwind of this
day and age and an overloaded global village.
It all started with a scouting trip to Tucumn
to find locations for a short film, says Nicols.
During that trip, my friend Mirta Gloria Soria
invited us to spend a few days at her parents
place. After several days living together, the
idea to make a film about them emerged, and
we talked about it. We agreed that the guiding
keyword was going to be tradition. They said
yes, and we committed ourselves to start as soon
as possible. Shortly after, we were immersed in
an experiment with uncertain results, and an
intuition that a film could come out of that. Its
not easy to define your own film, especially one
with these characteristics. I think it is a film
that doesnt have a univocal interpretation, and
I wouldnt like to predispose the construction of
sense, says the filmmaker. In any case, I would
say its a viewpoint or an approach to the Gaucho
tradition, a compound of hybrid materials both
fictional and documentary that suggest an
encounter between what remains, what will no
longer be, and a certain mythical or imaginary
picture of that universe.

The myth of Buenos Aires as the Paris of South
America a European city nestled in the New
World is at the center of the story Luis Bernrdez imaginary, that mutates from a documentary to
depicts in The Corroborators which on Special
Mention at the Work in Progress competition
of the 30th Festival. That core also includes the
existence of a secret society that planned to fulfill
the old project of an illuminist country, so typical
of the ideas of the so-called 1880s Generation.The
starting point for the film was an old postcard of
Buenos Aires that had the seal of the Janus Bust,
which the director found in San Telmo. I started
to investigate and arrived to the conclusion that
copying Paris was more of a plan than an ideal,
Bernrdez states. It was the project of a country
that is still alive in the aspirational character
of our society. I decided to tell the story of this
investigation which is a reflection on our identity
as a society and as individuals in order to also
make it clear for myself. Defined by its director
as a crossroads between the feasible and the
an architectural thriller, The Corroborators puts
that 19th century dream of the Paris of the River
Plate in check. It was a regime of fascination-
subjection-aspiration-emulation, the director
describes. Now, that bond has switched to New
York or Miami, it has been updated in them.
Buenos Aires used to be, wanted to be, the Paris of
the Plate. But a country is not made of its capital
city. And its certainly not the result of copying an
architectural style or an idiosyncrasy. Today, it is
an imaginary, material and social element that
prevents us from being. Its the Paris of the Plate
in the sense that it wants to be another thing, and
wont accept being what it actually is.

Danile Incalcaterra, codirector junto con la suiza Fausta
Quattrini, est involucrado desde hace aos en una noble
tarea: devolver a los nativos guaranes andevas 5000
hectreas de bosque paraguayo que hered de su padre,
cedidos por el dictador paraguayo Alfredo Stroessner. Su
sueo es convertir esta tierra en una reserva natural, con
un observatorio cientfico junto a los nativos. La llam
Arcadia, y la convirti en el lugar de su utopa personal.
Luego de El impenetrable, su film anterior presentado
fuera de concurso en el Festival de Venecia y ganador
en Biarritz en 2013, Incalcaterra y Quattrini ofrecen esta
historia que no por fantstica es menos real, con tintes de
thriller, cine poltico y documental ecolgico.
For years, Danile Incalcaterra, co-director alongside Fausta
Quattrini, has been involved in a noble task: giving back to
the andeva Guarani natives 5,000 hectares of Paraguayan
forest he inherited from his father who, in turn, received them
as a cession from Paraguayan dictator Stroessner. His dream
is turning that land into a natural reserve, with a scientific
observatory, together with the natives. He named it Arcadia,
and turned it into the place of his personal utopia. After El
impenetrable, their previous film screened out of competition
at the Venice Film Festival and a winner at Biarritz in 2013
Incalcaterra and Quattrini offer us this story that is fantastic
but real, with shades of a thriller, a political film and an
ecological documentary.

Ramiro 5 Therapy

Ramiro es poeta y propietario de una
librera en Lisboa. No le va demasiado bien
con ninguna de las dos cosas est en un

Lisbon. He isnt doing well with either of those

Tie Your Plough to a Star

El registro del regreso del cineasta Fernando Birri a la
Argentina en 1997 permaneci en las sombras hasta
ahora, cuando Carmen Guarini lo recuper para
plasmar este clido retrato de uno de los responsables
intelectuales del llamado Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano
y cofundador de la Escuela de Cine de San Antonio de
los Baos, Cuba. Birri vino a filmar una pelcula-ensayo
sobre el Che Guevara por encargo de un canal alemn, y
all comparti con Guarini el proceso de filmacin que,
entre otras cosas, inclua dilogos con Ernesto Sbato,
Eduardo Galeano, Osvaldo Bayer, Len Ferrari y Pino
Solanas, entre otros. Habindolas recuperado de un VHS
18 aos despus, Guarini retom aquellas imgenes y
sum otras propias grabadas en Cuba e Italia.

The footage from filmmaker Fernando Birris return to
Argentina in 1997 remained in the shadows until now, when
Carmen Guarini recovered it to convey this warm portrait of
one of the masterminds of the so-called New Latin American
Cinema, and co-founder of the San Antonio de los Baos Film
School in Cuba. Birri had come to shoot a film-essay on Che
Guevara as an assignment from a German television channel,
and shared with Guarini the shooting process that, among
other things, included dialogues with Ernesto Sbato, Eduardo
Galeano, Osvaldo Bayer, Len Ferrari and Pino Solanas, among
others. Guarini retrieved that footage 18 years later in VHS,
using those images and adding some she had recorded in Cuba
and Italy.

celebrada. Colegas y estudiantes por igual
prefieren tenerla lo ms lejos posible. El
personaje interpretado por la siempre
impecable Isabelle Huppert atraviesa un
fenmeno meteorolgico de lo ms extrao.
Una pesada tormenta cae alrededor del
laboratorio que la encuentra sumergida en
sus labores. Un cielo cada vez ms furioso
se parte en rayos, hasta que finalmente
uno de ellos alcanza para abrir un juego de
espejos con la obra del escocs Robert Louis
Stevenson, Dr. Jekyll y Mr. Hyde. Madame Hyde
no ser fcil de contener, pero algo de toda
esa revolucin cambia para siempre no solo
a la protagonista sino a todo aquel que la
rodea. Funcin de apertura de esta nueva
edicin de nuestro Festival, no poda llegar
a estas costas de otra forma que no fuese
acompaada por una comitiva de lujo. A la
proyeccin la engalanan su director, Serge
Bozon, y Pierre Lon, quien ha contado con
oportunidad destaca como actor. Y esta no
es la nica aparicin de Lon durante estos
das cinfilos: adems de acompaar en
la gran pantalla a la dama multifactica,
tambin se lo puede ver en Barbara, de
Mathieu Amalric, film que participa en la
seccin Autores de esta edicin y cuya idea
original es parte de su obra junto a Renaud
Legrand. Y, como si no fuera suficiente
para la dupla Bozon-Lon, y casi como un
vertiginoso crossover, el domingo 19 se
acercarn a Ado Arrietta para conversar
abiertamente sobre sus obras y todo el
cine que entre en el Saln Recova de Hotel
Provincial.

Mrs. Gquil isnt exactly a well-regarded
person. Colleagues and students prefer to
have her as far away as possible. The character
played by the always impeccable Isabelle
Huppert goes through a very strange weather
phenomenon. A heavy storm falls around
the lab where shes working. An increasingly
furious sky fills up with lightning, until

cinephile days. Apart from accompanying the
multifaceted actress, we will also see him in

in the Auteurs section whose original idea was
crafted by Len and Renaud Legrand. And, as

The Most Radical of Fictions
Cineasta eclctico, msico y autor, el cubano Rafael Ramrez llega al 32 Fes-
tival a presentar su diversa obra: los cortometrajes Diarios de niebla, Limbo,
Traces of the Inscribed, Alona y Los perros de Amudsen, seleccionado en el Festi-
val de Locarno.

En tu obra trabajs con el falso
documental, el documental y la ficcin.
Existe a esta altura una lnea divisoria?
Cada film tiene su propio camino. Lo real
es ese mbito brumoso donde impera la
causalidad, con su aparente lgica. Se debe
ir contra ese enemigo: hay algo detrs que
se arrastra y se cuela por los intersticios
del orden. Ese es mi territorio. Yo creo
que la no ficcin, en sus postrimeras,
en su extremauncin, es la ficcin ms
radical. Eso va generando una forma, una
estratificacin monstruosa. Y all est
lo fascinante. La lnea entre ficcin y no
ficcin es tica. Pero tambin teolgica.
Cmo describiras las condiciones
de produccin actuales para el cine
independiente en Cuba?
Son muy difciles, al punto de que hablar
4 de produccin en algunos casos suena
grandilocuente. Hay realizadores que con
mucho trabajo y sacrificio se han hecho
de un espacio y producen su obra, hay
otros que pactan de diversas formas con la
industria. Y, por otro lado, qu es ser, en
ltima instancia, independiente?
Cmo ves el desarrollo del cine
experimental en tu pas?
Hacer cine experimental te coloca
automticamente en una especie de
submundo condenado al rechazo de
amplios sectores. La mayor parte del cine que
se hace en Cuba, estatal o independiente, se
encuentra habitando la gran trampa de oso
del neorrealismo, preocupados por escribir
el relato definitivo de la nacin, etctera. A
m en realidad me agota bastante.

An eclectic filmmaker, a musician and an author, Cuban artist Rafael Ramrez comes

Your work covers mockumentaries, and sacrifice; there are others who make deals

Aquella vez se trat de un grupo de directores nveles
que presentaban sus primeras y segundas pelculas y
producciones independientes. Este ao el Festival recibe
a la Repblica de Corea como Pas Invitado de Honor. A
las pelculas mostradas en esta seleccin se suman una
serie de charlas y visitantes, directores y profesionales
del cine de diferentes reas, que visitarn el Festival con
el fin de compartir con la audiencia los secretos del xito
del cine coreano.
In 2012, in collaboration with the KOFIC (Korean Film
Council), the Mar del Plata International Film Festival
focused on new Korean directors. At the time, it was a
group of new directors who presented their first and second
films and along with other independent productions. This
year the Festival receives Republic of Korea again, this time
as our Guest Country of Honor. Along with the films screen
in this selection are a series of talks and visitors, directors
and film professionals from various places, who will visit
the Festival in order to share with the audience the secrets
of the success of Korean cinema.

El 10 de junio de 1991, el agente especial del
FBI Dale Cooper o su doppelganger? se
preguntaba cmo estaba Annie, dejndonos
sin la serie que se haba ganado millones de
adeptos alrededor del mundo. Pareca que
no habra vida despus de las dos primeras
temporadas de Twin Peaks. Sin embargo,
trece meses despus, David Lynch revisitaba
ese zumbn, misterioso y apasionante
universo que haban creado con Mark
Frost, ahora en modo largometraje. Pero
el mundo no estaba completamente
preparado para Fire Walk with Me, o Fuego
camina conmigo, como se conoci aqu. La
pelcula sufri el desdn de muchos, en
especial de los seguidores de la serie, esos
mismos fanticos que hasta haban llegado
a mandar amenazas a los ejecutivos de la
cadena ABC bajo la forma de cajas de donuts

pelcula sobre Hollywood. Hollywood
como tierra prometida pero tambin
como ese lugar que te puede expulsar
instantneamente si no entrs en sus
parmetros. Es un tema sobre el cual se
ha hablado mucho, desde El camino de los
sueos, de David Lynch, hasta la novela
Segn venga el juego, de Joan Didion, solo por

On June 10, 1991, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper

the world. It seemed like there wouldnt be life
after the first two seasons of Twin Peaks. However,
thirteen months later, David Lynch would revisit
that quirky, mysterious, enthralling universe he
had created alongside Mark Frost, now in feature-
film mode. But the world wasnt fully prepared for
Fire Walk with Me. The film suffered the disdain
of the audiences, especially the series followers
those same fans that had even sent threats to ABC
execs in the shape of boxed stale donuts, logs and
thousands of letters demanding the continuity
of a show that was failing in the ratings. That
audience loved the warmth of the show, and
what Lynch did was submerge that universe in an
unusual coldness, depicting the events that took
place immediately before the beginning of the

Fire Walk with Me gained a different kind of
strength. And yet we had to wait until this year
to confirm that everything actually was is?,
will be? the other way around: the film is part
of the canon, because it was from there that
Lynch built together with Mark Frost the

important audiovisual events in recent memory.
On one hand, we have the film screened in a 4K,
restored version with all of its audiovisual glory
in this edition of the Festival. On the other, there
is a conference where Spanish critics Fernando
Ganzo and lvaro Arroba both of them secret
members of a brotherhood called Lynchs Hidden
Details will debate with two of the Festivals
programmers and the audience about one of the
most fundamental questions you can ask: and
