1 About the DC/DC converter
The CPC 1500B series is a DC/DC converter telecom power systems offering dual
voltage. This product series consists of two product versions to convert -48V to +24V and
+24V to -48V. To save valuable space in the dual voltage system, the product offers high
power for small physical size. The DC/DC converter meets the supply requirements for
state-of-the-art telecommunications equipment. The wide input voltage range and
extended temperature operating range contribute to a cost effective and reliable solution.
The galvanic isolation between input and output offer a flexible solution for varieties of
applications. The DC/DC converters are hot pluggable and support easy installation,
expansion and service procedures. The modules can communicate with Deltas PSC 3
controller.

The typical applications include telecommunications networks and data networks.

The DC/DC converters do not contain any user serviceable parts. A faulty module must
be replaced as a complete unit.

The installation description must be strictly adhered to.

3 Functional description

3.1 Input voltage range

The DC/DC converter has a wide input voltage operating range to cover the overall range
with a DC feed from a battery backup system.

If the input voltage rises above the maximum input voltage limit, the converter switches
off. Exposure to DC over-voltage may cause converter failure. If the input voltage falls
below the minimum input voltage limit, the converter switches off.

The converter switches on automatically when the input voltage is within the input voltage
limits. The operating range can be configured using the PSC 3 controller.

Note! Application guidance CPC 1500B-24:

For the input voltage range < 44 V, the maximum supply power and output
voltage can be supported according to Figure 1.

Note! Application guidance CPC 1500B-48:

For the input voltage range < 22 V, the maximum supply power and output
voltage can be supported according to Figure 1.

3.2 Output characteristics

The DC/DC converter has a constant output power characteristic to meet the demand of
optimal power supply usage for electronic constant power loads. The result is a constant
recharging current to the battery after a mains outage and improved rectifier efficiency.

Figure 4. CPC 1500B-48 output characteristics

3.3 Output voltage

The predefined factory setting for the output voltage is 27V (for the model CPC 1500B-
24) respectively 54 V (for the model CPC 1500B-48).

The default output voltage setting can be reconfigured by means of using the PSC 3
controller. The output voltage setting range of the DC/DC converter is 24 ... 28 V (for the
model CPC 1500B-24) respectively 48 ... 56 V (for the model CPC 1500B-48).

3.4 Output current

The predefined factory setting of output current limit is 58 A (for the model CPC 1500B-
24) respectively 29 A (for the model CPC 1500B-48).

The default output current limit setting can be reconfigured by means of using the PSC 3
controller. The output current limit setting range of the DC/DC converter is 6 ... 58 A (for
the model CPC 1500B-24) respectively 3 ... 29 A (for the model CPC 1500B-48).

3.5 Over-voltage protection OVP

The DC/DC converter is equipped with selective over-voltage protection (OVP). If the
output voltage exceeds an internally set limit, the DC/DC converter is shut down.
Combining OVP with a current measuring condition allows selectivity for DC/DC
converters connected in parallel to ensure that only the affected DC/DC converter is shut
down.

The factory setting is 29.5 V +/- 1V (for the model CPC 1500B-24) respectively 59 V +/-
1V (for the model CPC 1500B-48).

The default OVP limit setting can be reconfigured by means of using the PSC 3 controller.
The OVP setting range of the DC/DC converter is 27 ... 29.7 V (for the model CPC
1500B-24) respectively 56 ... 59.5 V (for the model CPC 1500B-48).

Note! In case the configured OVP level is higher than the effective factory
setting (hardware incl. Tolerances), then the factory setting will be active for the
protection.

Disconnecting the DC input supply voltage for approximately 2 seconds resets the DC/DC
converter after an OVP shutdown.

3.6 Load sharing

The DC/DC converter is equipped with an active load sharing function that ensures equal
load on parallel DC/DC converters. The function uses the communication interface bus
between DC/DC converters. This function does not require any other external unit outside
DC/DC converters.

3.7 Cooling
The DC/DC converter uses a fan to force air through it. The air inlet is from the front side.

3.8 Thermal management

The DC/DC converter is protected with three integrated thermal sensors monitoring the
fresh intake air temperature and internal temperatures at the DC/DC converter.

Thermal management protects the DC/DC converter against overheating by reducing the
output current limit to limit the internal temperature, as shown in Figure 6 and Figure 7.

To protect against interrupted air flow and fan failure, the DC/DC converter is shut down
as soon as the internal temperature reaches a critical value. If the temperature returns to
within normal limits, the DC/DC converter restarts automatically. If the airflow is
interrupted or the fan fails, the DC/DC converter recognizes several unsuccessful restart
attempts within a short period. In that case the DC/DC converter remains shut down and
an alarm is generated.

4.2 DC/DC converter installation / removal

The DC/DC converter is installed onto a shelf by sliding the module into the required
location until hearing the click of the automatic locking mechanism.

For removal of the DC/DC converter from the system, the handle must be lifted first to
unlock the DC/DC converter and then the DC/DC converter can be pulled from the
system.

4.3 Configuration
When installed to a system with a PSC 3 / CSU 502 controller, the DC/DC converter is
automatically configured. In systems without a controller the DC/DC converter operates
with the factory-set standard configuration.

Some special system functionalities with PSC 3 require an acknowledge process of the
DC/DC converter. In such case the user will be guided by the PSC 3 to press the Config
button on the front of the DC/DC converter.
