In this lab, students will build and explore 4 different designs of the power supply, zeener
and Op-Amp based (W/O the power transistor), and the LM317 adjustable regulator.
Procedure
Student will follow the instructions that the TA provided on the blackboard
1. Build and test transformer
2. Build and test zeener and Op-Amp based regulation
3. Build and test zeener and Op-Amp with power transistor based regulation
4. Build and test LM 317 regulation

Observations
The observation section will be broken down into 4 subsections focused on the
observations of 1- Transformer, 2- Zeener Diode With Op-Amp, 3- Zeener Diode With Op-Amp
and Power Transistor, and 4- LM 317.
1 Transformer
Changing the polarity of the transformer changes the sign of the output wave. Voc
= 12.95Vrms, the resistance required to load down the transformer to 12V is 20ohm. Therefore,
we use the voltage divider equation, to obtain Rtrans = 1.5833, which is very small, thus ignore
the value. For the plots of the lab, they are in the Appendix.
For this one we introduced C = 47uF, and Rload = 480ohm. Plots of this circuit can
be found in the Appendix section of the lab report.
The result of testing this circuit can be found in the Appendix section. Oddly, the

Conclusions
The purpose of this lab is achieved. 4 designs of power supplies were build and tested by
us. The measurements are not exact but we managed to obtained the approximate value to matched
the PPT.
Problems
During this lab, we had some issues with the breadboard or some issues with the circuit
element. Our output seems losing details at the peak of the voltage. We failed to solve the issues
but managed to obtain the approximate output.
I heard from my friend that the Prelab 4 question need to be done on this lab, but I am not
sure. I will be handed in the hard copy of the prelab on 3/31s Lab.
