I. Introduction

Survivor is a reality show that present the life of poor people struggling in the middle of society.
The show usually shows a figure who come from poor family and then meet with the celebrity
figure that also contributes as host. The show can be considered take side on poor people, since it
shows the goods of working class. The show is unique, because it reverses the traditional
stereotype of poor people, and promote the idea that poor people also can be established as role
models and inspiration. However, the show also presumably exploit and manipulate the poor
people appears in the show. By using textual analysis, author wants to analyze the content of the
show to find the manipulation that the show uses in order to be presented to audience.

Thesis Statement: Reality show Survivor exploits poor people by manipulating the
representation of poor people in order to be more appealing for audience.

II. Body Paragraph #1

Topic Sentence: Discussing about reality show in term of both general explanation and specific
in Indonesia.

A. It can be said that the characteristic of the genre is the programmes are largely unscripted,
and features the stars being common people and they are depicted facing extraordinary
situation thus improve their lives.
B. Reality shows also allow viewers to see for themselves, which become the key
attraction, changing the relationship between viewer and screen into ssomething more
intimate and participatory than ever before.
 C. Some reality shows that started to get more attention are those which present the struggle
of poor people. Example: Minta Tolong, Uang Kaget, Orang-orang Pinggiran, and
Survivor.

III. Body Paragraph #2

Topic Sentence: Description of Survivor reality show.

A. Survivor is broadcasted by Trans TV and airs every Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. The
show stars Ruben Onsu, one of the most known comedian in Indonesia.
B. The show usually puts Ruben and his partner into the life of people with physically or
economically subsistence. The stars will live together with these people, undergoing their
daily activity from the poors people point of view.
C. Survivor reality show challenges the traditional depiction of social class, especially
working class. In the show, lower class people often portrayed as good, persistent and
patient people, in responses to the oppression that performed by people from higher class
society.

IV. Body Paragraph #3

Topic Sentence: Survivor exploits poor people by manipulating the content of the show.

A. Even though it seems that the show gives the good impression on poor people, it only
shows a little fragment of representation about lower class, and the show only shows the
good representation.
B. The show manipulates the event in the show so it seems to be more dramatic and mass
appealing.
C. Even though the show depicts poor people as an independent figure, it still centered on
higher class people as the savior in the end of the show.

V. Conclusion

The study shows that media still cannot purely produce something without any additional
adjustments in order to be more appeal in audience eyes and more profit.
