REQUIREMENT

Reinforcedconcreteisacompositematerial,henceaproperbondbetweenthetwomaterialsconcreteand
reinforcementisthefirstrequirement.Aminimumlengthofreinforcingbarisneededtodevelopthefull
bondstrengthbetweenconcreteandsteel.Thislengthisexpressedintermsofdevelopmentlength.

Developmentlengthoneachsideofanysectionisthelengthoverwhichtheforceinthereinforcementat
thatsectionwillbedevelopedwithoutbondfailurebetweenthesetwomaterials.Sometimesareinforcingbar
isextendedand/orbentatitsendstosatisfydevelopmentlengthrequirement.Suchextensionand/orbending
ofabaratitsendsiscalledanchorage.Abentbarprovidesagreatersafetyagainstbondfailureasduringa
pulloutthewholeconcreteistobecrushed.

Reinforcingbarshavelimitedlengthsforeaseofhandlingandtransportinghenceincaseofacontinuous
memberoramemberoflargespanitisnecessaryforcontinuitytojointwobarsbyoverlappingtheendsat
thejoint.Theoverlappingportionarejoinedtogethereitherbyconcreteitselfbyprovidingproperdevelopment
lengthorbyweldingincaseoflimitationoflengthforoverlapping.Suchjointingoftwobarsforcontinuityof
reinforcingbaratanysectioniscalledsplicing.

Reinforcementsareroundbars.Theyareprovidedasstraightorshapedappropriatelytosuittherequirements.
Thesereinforcementsareplacedatcertainspacingtomeetthedesignrequirements.Butthesespacingmust
bewithinarangeoftheminimumspacingandthemaximumspacingforeaseofcasting,compaction,control
ofcracking,etc.aslaiddownintheStandardCodeofPractice.

Alltypesofreinforcementsmusthavesufficientconcretecovertoprotectthemfromenvironmentalexposure
conditionsandalsoagainstfire.SuchcoveriscalledNominalCover.

Otherrequirementsofdetailingaretheminimumandthemaximumamountofreinforcement,sideface
reinforcement,distributionofreinforcement,etc.
