Grade/Subject: Grade Two Social Studies Unit: Ukrainian Culture Lesson Duration: 30 min

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES


Overview of lesson:
Students will learn about the traditional dance and clothing of the Ukrainian culture. They will
participate in class wide brainstorming using adjectives (part of their L.A focus). Students will
have a chance to colour in their own Ukrainian outfit colouring sheet.

General Learning Outcomes:


2.1: Canada's Dynamic Communities
Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how geography, culture, language,
heritage, economics and resources shape and change Canada's communities

Specific Learning Outcomes:


2.1.3 - investigate the cultural and linguistic characteristics of an Inuit, an Acadian and a
prairie community in Canada by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions for
inquiry:
What are the cultural characteristics of the communities (e.g., special symbols, landmarks,
languages spoken, shared stories or traditions, monuments, schools, churches)?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Demonstrate their understanding of what makes Ukrainian clothing unique through discussion
and visual representation.
2. discover the uniqueness of Ukrainian dance by watching videos and describing the activity
through oral discussion.
3. understand that many elements help develop a culture and shape the people within the culture
by investigating the different elements and creating visual artifacts.

PROCEDURE
Introduction (5 min.):
1. Review the word traditions
a. Pryvit word we learned last class
b. Can anyone tell me what tradition means?
c. Do you remember any traditions we talked about last class?
i. Christmas traditions

Body (20 min.):


2. Hopak traditional dance of Ukrainians
a. Word on board
b. Ask what they think the word might mean
c. Hopak is a type of dance
i. Do you know any other types of dance?

a. Ask if they noticed anything about clothes or dance
i. Use adjectives (L.A.)
ii. Brainstorm on white board
4. Traditional Clothing
a. Show pictures of men and women outfits
b. Brainstorm adding to list about dance
i. Use more adjectives
5. Colouring Sheet
a. Colour sheet of traditional dress
i. Explain that colours must reflect the clothing Ukrainians wear
ii. Best colouring

6. End of Day Questions
a. What main colours are the clothing Ukrainians wore?
b. How would you describe their dancing?
7. We will continue learning about Ukrainian culture next class by discussing some common
foods.
