from the office of the President

Dear Bishop DuBourg Community,

As we embark upon another school year, we present our newest edition of the annual Cavalier Magazine,
covering many of the exciting things that took place this past year. Please take note of this edition's theme,
"Bishop DuBourg - Where you can be everything you want to be." We pride ourselves on offering academic
programs, faith formation, extracurricular clubs, athletic teams, and opportunities for all our students,
regardless of gender, learning needs, socioeconomic background or otherwise. DB truly is a place for everyone
where each student can discover themselves and what they would most like to get out of life.

In this issue of the Cavalier, we highlight some exciting news and updates about our school, including a record-
breaking senior class, cosmetic and brand new facility upgrades, alumni stories, and a recap of some of our
favorite events. Please read on to learn more about what a great school year we have just completed.

I invite you to visit us on campus at any of our many events throughout the school year - like Homecoming, our annual Gala Auction, our
senior class Trivia Night, or one of our new events, like the Taste of DB. All are also welcome to join and celebrate with us at our monthly
all-school Masses. Please see the next page for upcoming events. Other dates and times can be found on our website calendar.

Towards the end of this magazine, you will find our annual giving report for the fiscal year 16-17. Our continued service to our students
and families is made possible by all of these generous and philanthropic supporters of our mission. Thank you for your continued
support of our students and our school.

Thank you, Bishop DuBourg community, for your constant support and prayer. We are a strong fellowship of Cavaliers past and present,
and we are blessed with such unity. In Christ,

A+ Program now available for private schools!
We want to share some exciting information with you about a new program for our students the A+ Schools Program.
This program has been available to public school students since 1993 and just this year became available for private school
students. The A+ Schools Program provides applicants who meet the A+ requirements free tuition and fees to any approved
community college or post-secondary vocational or technical school as a full-time student. Many 4-year colleges and
universities also offer scholarships or grants to students who have been certified as an A+ student.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our students, many of whom already qualify for this program. The main requirements
include a 2.5 cumulative grade point average, a 95% cumulative attendance record, a qualifying score (15-17) on the Math
section of the ACT test, and a total of 50 hours of unpaid tutoring/mentoring over the four years of high school.

We encourage all students who can meet the A+ requirements before graduation to participate in this program. Students
can only gain by participating in this program. Once students apply to the program, they can get started with their tutoring/
mentoring hours and/or select a service site which will help meet this requirement.

If you have any questions about the program, please direct them to Dr. Bridget Timoney or Mr. Jim Campbell who serves as
our A+ Program Coordinator: jcampbell@bishopdubourg.org.

1:1 Technology Program

all students now equipped with top-of-the-line windows surface pro 4 tablet/laptops!
A well-developed technology program to complement the curriculum is
essential in developing an enhanced college preparatory experience for
our students. In the 2017-18 school year, Bishop DuBourg High School is
upgrading the school-wide One-to-One Tablet Initiative. Each student will
be equipped with a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablet that offers students the
ability to utilize the tablet as a laptop or touch screen device. These tablets
are considered top-of-the-line in the marketplace and they offer many
educational benefits.

The purpose of this One-to-One Tablet Initiative is to provide our students

the opportunity to integrate technology into all aspects of the educational
experience. Our goal is to fully engage the students in the learning process and extend their classroom experiences beyond
pages of books and walls of the school building. Utilizing these tablets on a regular basis will allow students to understand
the valuable role of technology in their high school education and in their future educational endeavors.

Read a Q&A about the DB guidelines for these exceptional new tablets

COMMEMORATING 150 GUILD THEATRE PRODUCTIONS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF JIM LEIBRECHT
How does it feel to see students youve
taught go on to be great successes in the
acting world?
As a teacher, to have a student pursue a life and/or career in the
area you teach and love is a really great feeling. It means I have
either enhanced a young persons sense of purpose and career or
perhaps even awakened it as something new to which the person
can pursue with vigor and enthusiasm. To have any such student
reach the highest level of success in that pursuit is indeed a rare
and wonderful experience. The successful student has put in all the
time and effort and love, but to believe you did something at his or
her first steps is thrilling. To have it be something that gains the
student real recognition is extra thrilling.
Do you keep in touch with many of your
theater students?
Yes, I have a rather long list of alums in my Guild Alums contact
list. I send out emails from just: hi, how are you doing; to if you
want to see a great play or movie; or here is something great one
of you has done or here is some real sadness that is part of the life
of one of you or some teacher who needs your prayers. I also let

Theatre! We caught up with Jim to ask just what this
accomplishment has meant to him...

What does this 150th show mean to you?

It means I have been here a really long time! Hard to believe. Where
did 46 years go? I intended to stay at DB for 2 years, and I asked to
do a play the first year I was here because I was artistically bored,
and somehow 2 years became 46 and 1 play has become 150. It is
wonderfully shocking and rewarding all at the same time, but that
means I have had 150 opportunities to enrich the lives of others
in the DB community which has enriched mine more than I can Sandy, Jim, and Justin Leibrecht at the

A journey through Italy... a sabbatical reflection by president fr. lydon

I was on Sabbatical in Rome at the North American College
(NAC) from mid-January until mid-April. The NAC is a
ten-minute walk to the Vatican and a five-minute walk to
the Tiber River. The Institute for Continuing Theological
Education (ICTE), a Sabbatical program on the grounds of
the NAC, assists English-speaking priests in furthering their
theological education, taking time for prayer and retreat,
and traveling on pilgrimage. While attending ICTE, I studied,
toured and traveled with 33 other priests from USA, Canada,
Ireland, England, and Australia.
We studied a variety of theological topics from many experienced professors, including Liz Lev, a
Renaissance art expert. We toured the four major basilicas in Rome with her: St. Peters, St. Mary Major,
St. John Lateran and St. Paul Outside the Walls. We also visited many other churches in Rome, including
San Luigi de Francesi (St. Louis of France) which contains 3 massive Caravaggio paintings of St. Matthew.
Caravaggio has become a particular favorite of mine. While in Rome, too, I saw the Pope several times
at papal audiences, at Masses, and one impromptu time as he departed St. Ann Gate in his Ford Focus!
I was fortunate to travel to a variety of Italian cities with a small group of priests: Viterbo, Civitavecchia,
Subiaco, Montecassino, Bologna, Ravenna, Florence, Palermo, Agrigento, Orvieto, Assisi and Gubbio.
Each of these cities and towns have unique charm and beauty particularly Florence. Our group was also
blessed to enjoy a 5-day retreat in Assisi, a magical, mystical city, that still harbors the holiness of Sts.
Francis and Clare.
I was also privileged to be a pilgrim to the Holy Land with 14 of my fellow priests four days in lush,
verdant and spacious Galilee and four days in the intense, harried and conflicted city of Jerusalem.
Along the way, we visited Tel Aviv, Akko, Nazareth, Capernaum, the Mount of Beatitudes, Qumram, the
Golan Heights, Bethlehem, Bel Voir, and the Judean desert. We celebrated Mass every day along the way,
including the Garden of Gethsemane and the Holy Sepulchre (where Jesus was crucified).
The Sabbatical has heightened my appreciation for the artistry and ingenuity of the Renaissance,
particularly Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Bernini, Galileo and Rafael. Through their sculptures, painting,
architecture, and inventions, I am edified by the fundamental goodness and creativity of the human spirit.
Theirs and other artists work has enlivened my prayer life, my preaching, and my spiritual life.
I am very grateful to my DB Family who pitched in during my absence at DB as well as the staff at St.
Dominic Savio (SDS) where I live. Their willingness to stretch their labors to cover during my absence
proves their loyalty and commitment to the DB Mission. At DB, I am particularly grateful to Dr. Bridget
Timoney, Joyce Mard, Joan Provaznik, Sandy Leibrecht and Denise Schnable. At SDS, I am especially
grateful to Fr. Paul Rothschild and Robin Lukasek. Thank you all!

Faith and service throughout the school year...
pro-life march in washington d.c.
In January, a group of over 50 DB students and teachers traveled to Washington D.C.
to participate in the March for Life with thousands of other pro-lifers from across the
country. Senior Andrew Rettig had this to say about the experience:
"This pilgrimage told me a lot about myself. It showed
me that there are always other people there for you in
life no matter what you are going through. It showed
me that my complications in life are nothing compared
to what other people go through. It allowed me to see
life in a whole new manner and allowed me to realize
just how special life is. I saw God in each and every
person that attended this special event. Hundreds of
thousands of people made the sacrifice and took time
out of their lives to stand up for what they believe in. Supporting the gift of life is God working
through each and every person who attended the march. I am a firm believer that all lives matter
which is the reason I am and will always be Pro Life."

senior service with habitat for humanity in tupelo, ms

A group of 9 seniors and chaperones
traveled to Tupelo, MS and spent two
weeks working with Habitat for Humanity
in building a home for a family in need.
Senior Aaron Hughes said this after
working with HFH:
"I realized how good I have it, some of these
people don't have what we have. A person
I met that was truly living the gospel was
Wesley." (Wesley Partin -HFH group leader).
Seniors who attended: Aaron Hughes, Aaron Tucker, Vinnie Drago, Johnny Gosser, Eddie Meyer,
Elizabeth Hunyar, Emilie Esswein, Shauna Dunn, & Samantha Wokurka.

parties with dubourg house

At DB, we enjoy partnering with our neighbors
at CRSS DuBourg House for celebrations
throughout the school year, including Halloween
and Christmas parties (including "Adopt-
a-Resident" and
purchasing gifts for
each of them), and
inviting them over
for Grandparents and
Senior Citizens Day in April for a special event that includes a
pancake breakfast and performances from the students!

Planned Giving
Bequests
Please consider leaving a bequest to Bishop DuBourg High School in your Estate Planning documents. You may do so by
leaving a gift from your estate to DB, make DB your life insurance beneficiary or make DB the recipient of your charitable
gift annuity upon your passing from this life. Please visit the website of the Roman Catholic Foundation of Eastern Missouri
(RCFEM) at http://rcfstl.org/ or contact them at 314-918-2890 or info@rcfstl.org. The Roman Catholic Foundation is the
planned giving agency for the Archdiocese and their staff is skilled at helping donors make the right choice for a planned gift.
One of our alumni, for example, Bob Gau, 57, has established an endowment for tuition assistance, named for his late wife,
Kathleen, through RCFEM. Bob enjoyed working with the Foundation and is featured on their website.
Enjoy a Guaranteed Payment for Life!
Have you considered establishing a charitable gift annuity as a way to make a gift to Bishop DuBourg High School and still
receive a benefit for yourself and/or your spouse for the remainder of your lives? Interest rates on CDs and other fixed income
investments have declined over recent years. Individuals are in search of ways to maintain cash flow, seek the security of
guaranteed payments and save on taxes.
Charitable gift annuities are offered in four different types:
1. Single-Life Annuity: an annuity payment to only one person for his or her lifetime.
2. Spousal Joint-Life Annuity: an annuity payment to married couples (upon death of the first annuitant, the remaining
spouse is paid the full annuity payment during his or her lifetime).
3. Two-Life Annuity: an annuity payment to one person and then transfers to the second person upon the death of the first
person.
4. Deferred Gift Annuity: an annuity payment that can be deferred to a future date. (Date must be at least one year after the
original contribution).

With a charitable gift annuity, you can choose to receive your payments quarterly, semi-annually or annually. To find our more
about chartable gift annuities or other charitable ways to benefit Bishop DuBourg High School, please contact President Fr.
Mike Lydon at 314.783.4430 or mlydon@bishopdubourg.org or visit the Archdiocesan website for more information.
