Journal Entry 4: Write me a letter telling me about your experience receiving writing feedback in

the past. What has helped your progress as a writer? What has hurt your progress?

My experience with feedback has been very enjoyable as a writer. I myself, never knew
that I could enjoy writing as much as I did in this class. All the assignments that I got feedback
on were valuable in helping me successfully correct my mistakes in writing. In the class in the
past we never really got the opportunity to have peer reviewed artifacts and peer letters. Later, in
the year, however we did get to write letters to our peers and that one factor helped me progress
as a writer. It helped me because I always wondered how my writing appealed to other people
rather than a professor. Since, everyone elses views vary from each other the peer letters enticed
me to read what other people thought about my writing and what I can improve on in my writing.
I think one factor that slips up and hurts my progress as a writer is forgetting to use my writing
outside of the classroom. It is great that I get to experiment on how detailed I get in writing for
my modules and studios, but I need to get into a habit of writing at least for twenty or more
minutes every day. It is important to practice writing for future academic processes. By gaining
this crucial process of getting feedback from others I can start to become my own best reader too.
Hence, I can start giving feedback to myself in some cases. My writing and critical reading skills
can only improve with practice and the ability to refine my ability to judge what a good
argument is. To do that I need to read more and not forget to critically and rhetorically analyze
the novel or script I am reading. Another weakness I need to improve on.

Journal 5: Reflecting on SLOs on research paper and how they helped with your topic.
Personally, I utilized the Critical Reading, composing process, Knowledge of
Conventions, and Critical Reflection a lot throughout my plan on how to start on my research
essay. To be able to introduce and inform my audience about my research topic I used media and
design based conventions. For example, for my group inquiry project I compiled my knowledge
on global conflicts and put it into a website format that tied my topic to another one of my peers
research topic. To create my annotated bibliography for my research topic I had to critically
analyze where I got my information from to make sure it was from a reliable source. A biased
point of view also needed to be included in my bibliography so that different point of views was
included on my research topic. During my refection process, I peer reviewed my peers research
essay to give feedback on their essay. It was interesting to get feedback from my peer on how I
can improve my own essay as well and hear another voice on my progress. For the composing
process I brainstormed a lot to find out how to start my research essay. Sometimes I got stuck
and to get some inspiration I researched more on my topic and read books that were related to
my topic, like What it is like to go to war, by Karl Marlantes. Marlantes had engaging quotes
in his chapters which I cited in my research essay because it connected with the topic of global
conflicts.
Journal 6: Read "What is it My Business" in re:Composing. In your journal, write a 250-word
paragraph on why it is important to write about difficult and challenging topics that take us
beyond the classroom and into the real world?

It is very important for us as writers and readers to care about the difficult and sad topics
in this world. The reason being that if others dont care enough it would be the same few people
telling these stories and as Adichie in her talk said, Single stories promote stereotypes. The
more stories told on these topics the more people understand and know about these difficult
topics. The world gets more points of views on the topic, versus the same few Holocaust
Survivors telling their survival stories from their points of views. I think my topic is as difficult
as the Holocaust topic in What is it My Business? My research paper will focus on the difficult
things amongst global conflicts like Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide of ethnic races. The thing
that would be the most challenging is making my paper include my own thoughts on the topic.
Since sometimes when I include my thoughts it can make the paper come out to be longer than it
should be. Yet being concise about the topic is also very important to me. Another challenge I
will face in writing this research essay is coming up with more subtopics to include so that
different sides of why ethnic cleansing occurs can be included. It is hard to be brave enough to
tackle writing about a difficult subject, but it helps audiences around us care about the subjects
we write about. Not every person will agree with your views on the topic you write about, just be
prepared for that. Dont let difficult obstacles stop you from writing about a topic you are
passionate about! Get your ideas across because that is the uniqueness of being a writer.

Journal 7: Observe something specific and concrete about a discourse

community you are interested in observing--particularly one that relates to your inquiry
topic. Don't judge, just observe. Write about your observation (both your process and
what you observed about your community) in a 250-word entry.
First for the source I picked I had to make sure it was a primary source. I settled on
observing the website source of the Council for Foreign relations since they had factual and
statistical information on global conflicts. The Council of Foreign Relations created an easy to
reach site which is straight off the Logo on the Global Conflicts Tracker website. The logo is
located on the top left-hand corner of the tracker website and with just a click their main
conflicts website opens in a new window. On the main site a conflict that catches my eye is the
headlines of Can Catalina split from Spain?. Under the main article there are subtopics about
Catalonia from sources like CNN and the New York Times. Beside them has a page update of
the latest Hurricane Maria damages in Puerto Rico and what the island can do to restore its land.
Author names of the primary sources are located right under the title. The website includes
different subjects that the council focuses own for example; North Korea; Economics; Kurds;
and United Nations. In the middle of the website there is information on the experts behind the
information being written about the different disasters and conflicts around the world. It is
important to make sure that primary resources are accurate so that the research is reliable and
credible. Therefore, sometimes to better evaluate and understand the importance of primary
sources you need to be able to observe the information given critically. Being curious and asking
rhetorical questions is the basis of conducting research.

Journal 8: Read the resources at the library at the OWL at Purdues on MLA format and
citations. Explain how and why following citation format is integral to ethos when doing
research and writing research papers.
MLA format helps us have a consistent format for writing. This also allows writers
to avoid plagiarizing. It is important to utilize MLA Format for your research paper due to the
Ethos so directly related to the Logos of the rhetorical triangle. Establishing logic credibility is
just as important in making sure you are being unbiased and fair in your judgements of sources.
In academics itself we strive to pursue the acknowledgement knowledge and the further
advancement of logic. Establishing ethos is important so the product of your writing contains
correct grammar and syntax for the paper. To create a believable atmosphere your audience
needs to be able to believe the ideals and information you provide them. Credibility in ethos is
also important to help build an argument or persuade individuals to get involved with the topic.
One specific thing that the step of ethos helps you avoid is to not bring up logical fallacies into
your writing. Using MLA format makes it easier for the audience of your discourse to navigate
the information given with the provided cues from borrowed information. Through the citations
the audience can pick out certain sources which interest them and if they want to learn more
about it they can follow the information. They can also cross-reference sources to their liking as
well. Even though ethos is important it is not good to forget to balance between the three
rhetorical triangle topics. Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are equally important and should be
balanced. A fact about MLA format is that it helps produce formality and professionalism in
what we write.

Journal 9: In-class Journal writing: answer one of Walden's questions in the So What? section
on page 146.

Journal 10: Read Best Practices for Research. In journal, write 3 approaches you are going to
take to re-vision your work on your Research Essay.

One approach is that I will answer my own questions which are important to me and
address them in my paper. These questions will set the foundation of my paper because it reveals
subtopics. This approach will add more to my essay that was lacking in structure in my first
draft. Another approach is that I will utilize what I learned in class, such as the SLOs (Student
Learning Objectives). For my paper I need to make sure that the sites and sources I use are
reliable and timely, focusing on Critical Analysis. My mentor will be Mizani for my research
essay, so I will put my trust in her to help me with suggestions in how to improve my essay. This
will take care of my mentor part of the revising approach.
