Subject Mathematics

Grade Level Kindergarten

Learning Objective
Number and Number Sense
Focus: Whole Number Concepts
K.1 The student, given two sets, each containing 10 or
fewer concrete objects, will identify and describe one
set as having more, fewer, or the same number of
members as the other set, using the concept of one-to-
one correspondence.

Measurement
Focus: Instruments and Attributes
K.7 The student will recognize a penny, nickel, dime, and
quarter and will determine the value of a collection of
pennies and/or nickels whose total value is 10 cents or
less.
K.9 The student will tell time to the hour, using analog and
digital clocks.

Geometry
Focus: Plane Figures
K.12 The student will describe the location of one object
relative to another (above, below, next to) and identify
representations of plane geometric figures (circle, triangle,
square, and rectangle) regardless of their positions and
orientations in space

Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

Focus: Attributes and Patterning
Content

K.15 The student will sort and classify objects according to

attributes.

Activity
This holiday themed activity has multiple objectives, it was most
likely created to review and evaluate students understanding of
the mathematics learned since the beginning of the school year.
The teacher will explain that he/she will be calling up students
to complete problems on the SMART Board along with the help
of their classmates. They will help to guide the students through
the lesson, however, most of this lesson will be done by the
students themselves. Students will be able to identify if a group
has less or fewer objects compared to another group, they will
be able to add and subtract, also they will show comprehension
of shapes and fit them into outlines. Students will show that
they are able to tell time on an analog clock as well as identify
coins/money. Lastly, students will be able to group based on
characteristics. To begin the lesson, students must move and
rotate the shapes provided in order to fit into the outline, the
result will be a cool Halloween image! The class will be asked
what kind of Halloween image is in front of them. Next the
students will be presented with monsters that have just
completed a race, they must listen to each monsters description
and determine which place the monster finished in. For
example, The Green Blob monster finished in sixth, write a six
on his sign. At least six students will be called up to write
numbers. Afterwards, the children must count how many of
each object (pumpkins, cats, frogs, etc.) they see on the screen
and write that number down. Then the students will be
introduced to the Mind Reader. The Mind Reader will ask the
children a question to help them determine where a number
lies. For Example, This number comes before the number 5.
The children will then be able to determine that that number is
4. Students will not have to come up to the board for this
portion, the teacher will call on an individual students to answer
and they may request help from their class if needed. Up next,
students will group pumpkins into categories based on their
characteristics. Such as pumpkins that have teeth or pumpkins
that have triangle eyes. The teacher can have up to two
students using the board at a time for this activity. Lastly,
Addition, subtraction, money, and time problems will be hidden
behind pumpkins. The teacher may call up one student up at a
time to select a pumpkin and solve the problem behind it.
Students will be able to count and identify money, add and
subtract using word problems, and tell time on an analog clock.
