Melanie Cella Student: Brody

Lesson #3 3/08/17
New/Current Concept: Two-syllable Words with 2 Closed Syllables Combined
(Focusing on first 2 syllable division rules)

1. Sound Deck Drill: show card, student gives letter, keyword sound
Vowels: a, e, i, o, u
Consonants: r, g, d, s, l, sh, wh, th
Other Sounds: onk, ung, ing, ong

Materials: Sound Deck

2. Sound Deck Drill in Reverse: What says //? Student gives letter names and forms
letter on table, whiteboard, etc.
Vowels: a, e, i, o, u
Consonants: r, g, d, s, l, sh, wh, th
Other Sounds: onk, ung, ing, ong

Materials: Magnetic board

3. Concepts to Review: 3 Letter Blends Closed Syllable Words

Words: strap, scroll, splash, splits
Activity: Fishing Game

Materials: magnet board, fish game

Procedure:
1. Review difference between digraph and blend; how to tap out 3 letter blends
2. Use magnet board to make words strap, scroll, splash, and splits and tap them out
3. Fishing Game: First person to get 3 words, wins. Fish for word, tap out word, identify
syllable type

4. New/Current Concept: Two-syllable words with 2 closed syllables combined

Words: catnip, napkin, cobweb, nutshell, rabbit
Activity: Football Throwing Game

Materials: white board, football game, magnetic journal

Procedure:
1. Review difference what a closed syllable is

2. Introduce two syllable words: Sounds are built into syllables and syllables are combined to
form words.
Rule number 1 of syllable division: We divide a compound word between its two smaller parts.
Cat: one syllable word
Catnip: 2 syllable word; you need two breaths to say the word
Go through words and scoop into their separate syllables: catnip, nutshell, sandbox
When we scoop and separate them into their separate syllables, we will identify the syllables as
closed syllables.
Rule Number 2: We will locate the two vowels and put an index finger on each vowel. Then, if
we move inside the vowels between our fingers and we see 2 consonants, we will divide the
syllables BETWEEN the 2 consonants.
Give example/ scoop with napkin and rabbit.

3. Football Game: Throw ball at board; say word that he lands on, spell word using magnetic
journal and identify where to divide syllables, identify if the syllables closed (which they all will
be)
Collect words as you go, whoever has the most words wins,
If you land in the center, you get a bonus chance and have to spell one of the words on
the list (using bottom of charting list on page 2)

5. Charting:
Substep: 3.1
Page: pg 2
Real Words

Materials: chart, printed list of words, index card

Procedure:
1. Have Brody read across the word like from left to right
2. Only count first word he says, even if he self corrects (except if he taps)
3. Write down mistakes only (word he says on top, correct word on bottom)
4. Color empty boxed of how many he got correct

6. Spelling Activity:
Words: submit, nutshell, bathtub, magnet
Dictation:
Words: shellfish, sunset, suntan, public
Sentences: Dad will dust the cobweb until it is gone.

Materials: syllable cut outs, dictation paper, dictation proofreading cheat sheet, blank index
cards

Procedure:
1. Multi-sensory: say word, have student repeat it
Student repeats it dividing it into 2 syllables by pointing to index cards for each syllable
Student says first syllable, spells first syllable, then turns card over to check spelling
Student says second syllable, spells second syllables, then turns card over to check
Student then immediately reads word back while scooping from left to right
2. Move to pencil and paper for dictation (use part 8 page for instructions)
Teacher says word, student repeats
Student says word pointing to syllable on blank index cards
Student says first syllable, spells first syllable
Student says second syllable, spells second syllable
Write word naming each syllable and spelling it orally while writing it
Read word back while underlining syllables

7. Reading for Fluency:

Fun Until Sunset 3.1 page 26

1. Have him read the sentences and scoop
2. Read sentence by sentence and work on scooping then reread it all together.
