My name is Kathryn Elizabeth Kelley, Senior at Perquimans County High School.

I am

graduating on the ninth of June, 2018 and cannot be more excited! This school year is practically

slipping out of my hands and my -our impending future is almost upon us. Intense right? Of

course it is I am on the verge of adulthood and still get nervous when I cant put my change back

in my wallet fast enough at the register! And yet in a few short months Ill be expected to live on

my own, make my own food to prevent starvation, maintain an adult relationship, get educated,

stay healthy, and make money I feel like a small child that just cant understand how the

bunny goes through the hole, in reference to shoe tying, Its something that seems so simple and

yet I still cant grasp the subject.

These past four years have changed everything, people out of school act as if high school

was just four years of their life they had to endure to get to the good part. What is the good

part? If your not living for the now, is there ever a good part when you keep looking too far

ahead? Dont get me wrong I am looking ahead just not so far that I lose sight of today. Think

back to your middle school self In my case buck tooth, annoying, couldn't dress, and too bossy

for her own good. Im not -Were not the same anymore, Well I am still too bosy for my own

good sometimes, and my appearance did change but further from the surface is the real change.

Something I have noticed is that this generation is really powered by our music interest, maybe

no more that past gens. however we can share our interests with family, friends, and strangers

much easier that before with social media. If your taste in music is something that you believe

defines a part of who you are, then you have to admit it has changed once, twice, or twelve times

since you first got here. Other interests have probably sparked, some students didnt participate

in clubs or sports until high school and now it is a huge part of their lives. I didnt start attending
an actual art or drama club until my sophomore year, of coarse I participated in similar activities

but it wasn't such a huge part.

I love art, always have, Its something that never changed through the years. I was blessed

with an amazing art teacher that was in herself talented and pushed me to try new things and use

new techniques. I now sell my art regularly and have let my skills grow consistently. Before high

school I also had some acting experience from my local church, playing the virgin Mary -for 5

years IN A ROW, before knowing what a virgin even was! In my second year here I auditions in

Mr. Winslows rendition of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream & was casted the only

part I wanted, being on stage of a professional status in front of that amount of spectators gave

me a real respect for the art. ANd that is something that I can never forget. Having good

influences in my school life really helped to become the kind of person I want to become, A

respectable, educated person. I am using this time to build a foundation for real conversation, I

want to discuss literature, poetry, and theatre with other respectable persons. I am building this

foundation along with my love of reading, art, and theater arts. Its fantastic that my interests

coincide with my goals.

I guess at the end of this section where no one is going to read can be the nitty gritty

family section. I live with my single dad and half sister, my mom was never apart of life. She

came in to wreck havoc. I cant totally blame her, it can be hard living with my dad sometimes. I

briefly remember her as a small child and then she was gone my dad spent years tracking her

down because little old me wanted her back. I didnt want the real her, just the her that I made

up; the kind, present sending, loving, busy mom that didnt exist. You see my dad knew that all
kids needed a mom so he would buy me christmas presents, and birthday cards and put her name

on them. I remember playing hide and seek and finding a doll house box in my dads closet, a

week or so later christmas day I saw the same doll house under the tree, this time with a big

from Mom on the front. It wasn't from her and I know that my dad was just trying to help, I

was a pretty mature child and even at that age knew it would break my dads heart to know that I

knew so I never told him and he eventually stopped pretending. When I was eight years old we

moved out of VA to here and my dad found my mom. She came to live with us and had a two

year old that couldn't talk and ate everything like it was her first and last meal. Take what you

want from that statement. She soon got locked up for who knows and I begged to keep my new

sister, and after some abandonment charges on my mom I got to have her. I dont know exactly

what she know but depending on the day she has said that shes me as her mother figure, so I

guess thats a lot of responsibility. And Im done.

The next two pages are meant to be about college, where im going, what im going to

do, and how ill be better off. Well newsflash Im not. I wanted to got to college I was accepted

to Wesleyan and was going to major in Biology, minor in Literature, and with my major go to

Pre-Med, and then into a school of Physical Therapy. My dad was not able to give me any kind

college fund and refuses to participate in applications for financial aids. Military, Air Force that

has been his plan for me from the start. And like always Ill do it. My life is HIS life. Its okay, at

least its practical, right? I have spoken to Air Force recruiter Sgt Tejada and I am scheduled to

complete my ASVAB sometime in december, after that assuming I pass, I get sworn in in

January at Mepps, and then I start PT the next day. I can leave anytime after graduation. Sgt
Tejada said that every tuesday in transportation to San Antonio, Texas, where the Lackland Air

Force base is located. In Texas I will undergo 7.5 weeks of Basic Military Training.

Physical therapists help people with physical injuries or illnesses of to regain range of

movement and control their pain. They help determine the root causes of the trauma, counsel

patients, and work with them to create a plan for rehabilitation. Entry level education for a PT is a

Doctoral or professional degree, average annual pay as of 2015 according to those who study this kind of

thing is $84,020. Physical therapy is a career that will always be needed throughout society; it

helps the human body rebuild physical function in people that have been injured, have birth

defects, or any other reasons. There are certain education requirements to become one, just like

many other careers. It is a career that an individual who enjoys helping people and working in

the medical field would be perfect for. The job of physical therapy and physical therapy

assistants is an important factor to a lot of people. It is a job that will always be needed; there

will always be people that need help regaining their physical health ranging from total

rehabilitation it regaining the movement of a thumb. Many athletes have to use the services of a

physical therapist sometime throughout their career. However physical therapists do not only

work with athletes; they mostly work with individuals that have been in accidents or people that

have a birth defect affecting them physically. I would also like to add that a mental requirement

of a job in the medical field, a healthcare worker needs a positive attitude because they will be

around several patients in a work day. Additionally compassion and empathy are also traits that

will help a worker to excel in his/ her career and affect how their patients feel.

Many do not know, but there are a lot of different kinds of physical therapists that

specialize in one specific area. For example an individual could just be a foot physical therapist
and just take patients that need help regaining physical ability in their foot. Also there are

physical therapists that just work with a certain type of age group. Geriatric physical therapists,

for instance, work with the elderly; And pediatric physical therapists only work with children.

Another type of physical therapy is a neurologic physical therapist that specializes in the nervous

system. They would help people regain health from a brain injury, spinal cord injury, or a stroke.

However the most common type of physical therapy is an orthopedic physical therapist. These

types of physical therapists usually work in a hospital on patients that just get out of surgery and

need help regaining that muscle back, or patients that visit a clinic on a daily or weekly basis.

This type of therapy mainly focuses on the musculoskeletal system, including joints, tendons and

bones. This field has many options and opportunities for an individual looking for a specialized

career that makes a real difference. Especially if you want to build relationships are spend a lot

of time with each patient.

As well as many other careers in the business world, physical therapy also has the

opportunity for advancements, or promotions. A physical therapist usually starts out as a staff

therapist, where they develop their clinical skills. For an individual that is a physical therapist

they can advance on to become a team leader, clinical coordinator, program director, clinic

manager, etc depending on the setting, each job may have a different and unique title. Along

with the room for growth there are many benefits in a career in physical therapy, including the

work environment & one of the common benefits of the field is the 401K-retirement plan that

most jobs usually offer their employees. The facility that an individual would work in sometimes

will also offer to pay for their schooling to continue their education, or to renew their physical

therapy license and certifications. The main benefit of physical therapy is the work environment,
In this field a PT has flexible hours, casual business dress code (my favorite part!), and a positive

atmosphere that will make an individual want to come to work.

If I was going to continue towards this field I personally would want my doctorate, and

would attend Wesleyan University and major in Biology to get into Pre-med, then into a school

specializing in PT. I have always had a dream to help people. Now I have just shifted paths. I

plan on taking my ASVAB later this month, upon passing I am going to swear in and start PT. I

think that I want to take a summer of PT before going to the base in San Antonio, Texas.

Something about Texas in the middle of the summer wearing an ugly hot uniform while

exercising just doesnt seem like my cup of tea. Honestly I am hoping you are not reading this

anymore because it is 11 Oclock Thursday night & I spent way too much time trying to redo

things I lost. I am running on empty at the moment and there is a large slice of chocolate cake on

the counter giving me the googly eyes while I type away on this tangent testing to see if you

actually read these things. Plus I feel like you need a laugh sometimes, yeah Im talking to you

Fipps. Dont let me fail.

The next two pages are going to be a summed up reflexion on the entire project, Roadtrip

Nation experience, and I just got that piece of cake so Im in a better mood. During my original

interview I had stimulating conversations and heard a lot about personal problems in the

healthcare field. When interviewing Mrs. Langwell I liked that she dwelled on the fact that she

had always wanted to be a teacher, was pushed into the medical field and eventually followed

her bliss and became a teacher for health care careers. In the nursing field she described it as

female dominated, that prevented her from facing gender based social barriers. While working in
a hospital Mrs.Langwell did experience some difficulty getting respect from doctors in the

beginning, she overcame that obstacle by going above and beyond to earn respect and prove

herself as a professional healthcare worker.

Miss Anne was quite the character, inspired by her Physical Therapist to move and

exercise with encouragement. I think I learned most of all that she lives day to day, having fun

and GAMBLING AWAY HER CANDY! -This whole interview was the definition of a disaster

and i was not prepared for anything that she said-. And Miss Anne was quite the character,

Roadtrip Nation is a great company that involves random teens/ young adults looking for

advice or an entryway into the workforce. If you dont know what to do with your life? Its okay

and dont worry, Nathan, Mike, and Brian (Founders) didnt either. So after college, they bought

a mechanically questionable RV, painted it green, and decided to travel the country asking

people who do what they love how they figured it out.

15 years later, that road trip has become an organization dedicated to helping people find
career and life fulfillment. In their fleet of RVs, they crisscross the globe, journeying from
rugged back roads to sleek superhighways, subsisting off unnaturally colored gas station snacks,
sleeping in any empty parking lot they can findjust so they can talk to the people who figured
out how to build a career around their own unique combination of interests.
Theyve talked to everyone from Supreme Court justices to lobstermen and used their
insights to shape every career resource we make. The goal? To give us the tools to live a life
doing what matters to you.
