1.0 INTRODUCTION

As a start, The Sarawak Foundation (Yayasan Sarawak) was established under the
Sarawak Foundation Ordinance as a Statutory Body on 27th of May 1971. Their objectives are to
help Sarawak people in studies.

This new building (Yayasan Sarawak) is located at Jalan Sultan Tengah, Kuching,
Sarawak. The location is around 40-50 minutes from our campus (UiTM Kota Samarahan 1)
depends on the traffic. Weve decided to make the building as our case study because of the
building itself. The building makes our work easier because it has the same identical design on
the elements.

Based on Encik Husni (the office engineer), the consultants are all gathered on 2006 and
the construction of this building started on 2008 until 2010 but it only opens to people on 2011.
This building consists of 3 blocks building which are the main building, one building for sport
centre and one hostel. They also have one multipurpose hall, one auditorium, library, gymnasium,
kindergarten, mini mosque, and also synthetic soccer court.

2.0 TECHNICAL ASPECTS
i. WALL SYSTEM

A wall is a structure that defines an area, carries a load, or provides shelter or security. There
are many type of walls: Defensive walls in fortification. Walls in buildings that form a fundamental
part of the superstructure or separate interior sections, sometimes for fire safety. The wall of the
building is mostly brick walls. They used red brick walls that have been added with gypsum for
both internal and external walls. All of the wall system that they used to build the building are
mostly concrete (British Standard).

During this observation, weve been told that the internal walls in this building are more to money
against the quality. Although theyve been wasting a lot of money, the quality of the wall will be
worth it and last longer for a long period of time because of the high quality. For external walls,
they also have a weather ship and weatherproof type of walls in order to prevent the damage of
the wall. They used a mixer machine as installation method. The only maintenance theyve done
to the wall is painting. The good thing about these walls are theyre fire resistance. Lastly, the
specialty of this building is the whole wall finishing is perfect.

ii. DOORS

A door is a moving structure used to block off, and allow access to, an entrance to or within an
enclosed space, such as a building/vehicle. This building has 3 type of doors. The building
consists of internal doors, external doors and exit door. They used the tempered glass door for
external doors. The door that are used for external doors are usually based on the design of the
building itself. We can see that tempered glass door before entering the building or at the
entrance. For internal doors, they mostly used hollow plywood. These doors are also built in at
each of the officers office. The building also consists an exit door. The exit door is a fire-rated
door. This door is used for emergencies in the building. The size of the exit door is 1m X 2.1m.
The size of internal door and the external door are 2m X 2.1m.

iii. WINDOWS

A window is an opening constructed in a wall, door, or roof that functions to admit light or air to
an enclosure and is often framed and spanned with glass mounted to permit opening and closing.
It is also a framework enclosing a pane of glass for such and opening; a sash.

All of the windows in the building have the same design. They built the same design of windows
so it will make the building look identical and simple. The materials that have been used for the
windows are aluminiums. They used aluminiums because it is slightly well-maintained. As we
know, aluminiums are weatherproof. The pros of these materials are, theyre easy to find and light
in weight. However, the con is, it takes time for installation. The size of the window is 0.4m X 1.5m
each.

iv. STAIRCASE

A stairway, staircase, stairwell, flight of stairs or simply stairs is a construction designed to

bridge a large vertical distance by dividing it into smaller vertical distances, called steps.

This main building consists of three staircases that are all made from concrete. The staircases
are tiled. There are two open staircases in the main building and one staircase that left is built
when entering the exit door. This staircase is finely covered and used for emergencies. The
handler of the staircases are made from standard steel. The pro thing of these staircase, theyre
long-lasting and easy to maintain.

The left staircase is open staircase and the right one is emergency staircase

v. ROOF STRUCTURE

A roof is part of a building that covers the uppermost part of a building or shelter which provides
protection from animals and weather, notably rain or snow, but also heat, wind and sunlight. The
word also denotes the framing or stricture which supports that covering.

This building consists two types of roof. The main building is built with flat roof which they used
clip-locks on it. All of the roof on the building have the same design. There is only one building
that has different type of roof which is the resting place. The resting place is built with a gable
roof. The pro things about both of these roofs, they are less leakage, easy to install and anti-rust.
However, this kind of roofs are expensive.

3.0 CONCLUSION

Overall, for 7 years old building, this building is still in good condition and well-
maintained. Based on Mr. Husni, the head engineer in this office, this building is one of
the best building in Kuching.

First of all, this building is the first building to have fire-resistance wall which makes
the building more safer compare to any other building. Next, the materials used in building
this Yayasan Sarawak are mostly affordable in price, fair in qualities and quite long-
lasting. Then, the specialty of this building is, it is a multi-purpose building. Other than
that, the reason why the building only took 2 years of construction is because the designs
are simple and identical.

Compare to the old Yayasan Sarawak that located in the Kuching City Centre, this
new Yayasan Sarawak is more upgrade and modern in design. They used different
material on the building elements such as wall, door, window, roof and staircase.
