Job Summary: - She is responsible for developing and supervising nursing services of a
department or a floor consisting of two or more wards/units managed by ward supervisor. There
units may be inpatients, outpatients department, clinics, operation units, obstetric units, CSSD.
Reporting to: - Nursing Superintendent or Deputy Nursing Superintendent.
Responsibilities: She or he is responsible for following functions:
1. Patient care
2. Ward management
3. Educational function
4. Administrative functions
5. General functions
Patient care
1.Do regular rounds of her/his department.
2. Looks for the general comfort of the patient and his/ her relatives.
3.Evaluate for type of care needed in each ward or unit.
Ward management
1. She is responsible for maintaining the safety and general cleanliness of the department.
2. Plans ward management with the supervisor of each ward/unit.
3. Reinforce the principle of good ward management in each ward.
4. Help ward/unit supervisor to procure the ward/unit supply.
5. Supervise the proper use and care of equipments and supply in the department.
Educational functions
1. Arrange classes and clinical teachings for nursing students/ staff in the department related
to the specialty experiences.
2. Implement the ward teaching programme and clinical experiences of students with the
help of doctor and ward sister.
3. Conduct counseling and provide guidance to the nursing staff and students.
4. Arrange and conduct staff development programme in his/her department.
5. Assist in planning for and participation in the training of auxiliary personnels.
6. Write the confidential reports of her/his ward/unit supervisor.
Administrative functions
1. Organize and plan nursing care activities of the department /floor according to hospital
policy and services need.
2. Plan staffing pattern and other necessary requirement of her/ his department.
3. Conduct and attend departmental and intradepartmental meeting/ conferences from time
to time.
4. Makes rotation plan for the nursing staff under his/ her jurisdiction.
5. Act as a public relation officer of the unit and deals with the problem faced by the ward
supervisor, class-IV, employee and patients attendants.
6. Keep the NS/DNS offices inform regarding the needs of the nursing units/wards under
his/her charge and of any special problem.
General functions
1. Escorts the NS and special visitors in the department.
2. Participate in various professional activities like staff education, staff meeting etc.
3. Act as liaison between the nursing department and higher hospital authorities.
4. Carry out any other duties delegated by NS and DNS.
