Students Baseline Knowledge and Skills (Pre-Assessment)

I want to know if the preschoolers know what is healthy or unhealthy for them. This month is October, so
using Halloween candy as an example, I will ask the preschoolers if they have experienced a tummy ache
from eating excess amounts of candy or if they remember their parents warning them to eat a small amount of
candy. Based on the preschoolers response, I will be able to then proceed with the opening discussion.

Lesson Procedures

Opening

After introducing the topic of Halloween candy, the instructor will explain the negative side effects of
consuming excess amounts of candy/sugar. Then introduce other foods that will also present negative side
effects to the human body. Afterwards, the instructor will explain that healthy foods help our bodies feel
strong and energetic. Then, discuss that healthy foods come from farms, a certain section of the grocery store,
and restaurants that dont involve a drive-thru.

Closure

After completing a list of healthy and non-healthy foods related to the story The Gulps, the preschoolers will
pair up to categorize examples of photographed foods and understand the difference between the two. The
preschoolers will be able to choose to eat more wisely because it will make them feel strong, happy, and
energetic but eating unhealthy foods will possibly cause negative effects like tummy aches. So, the
preschoolers will understand that the benefits of eating healthy outweighs the unhealthy choices.
