Forensics: Blood Typing Class:

Case: Someone has broken into the science lab and taken the chemicals
from the locked cupboard. Without these supplies, students can no
longer do labs in science. It appears as though the perpetrator cut
themselves when prying the cupboard door open. A blood sample has
been found and analyzed.

Evidence: The blood found at the scene of the crime was analyzed and
determined to be type AB-

Suspects: Four suspects have been identified. Their motives are

provided on the SmartBoard.

Task: Using the virtual lab software, identify the blood types of each of
the four suspects. Once complete, record your findings in the case
report below. Finish all associated questions and hand the report in
once finished.

Anti-A, Anti-B, and Anti-Rh serums contain antibodies. When

antibodies bind to antigens (proteins) on the surface of Red Blood Cells,
it causes the blood to clump up (agglutination).

Hypothesis: (Who do you believe committed the crime and why?)

Conclusion:
Based on your results, which of the four suspects is responsible for
breaking into the science lab?

3
Questions:
1) What is causing the blood samples to clump when the Anti-serums
are added?

2) If an individual has type A and type B antibodies in their blood, what

blood type do they have?

3) Why can someone with type A+ blood not donate to someone with
type B- blood.

4) Why can someone with O- blood donate to anybody regardless of

blood type?

5) Why can someone with AB+ blood receive any type of blood
donation?
