Plot Summary/Character Analysis- Grover Underwood from the Percy Jackson series

For this assignment, I will focus on the first book of the Percy Jackson franchise, The

Lightning Thief. The Lightning Thief begins with Percy Jackson, a young teenager with ADHD

and dyslexia in the New York area, going on a field trip with his class. A girl in his class starts to

bully Percys best friend, Grover Underwood, and in retaliating her, water from a fountain

mysteriously drenches her. The pre-algebra teacher, Mrs. Dodds, takes Percy aside privately

presumably to scold him, but she turns into a Fury from Greek mythology and tries to kill him.

Mr. Brunner, another teacher, throws Percy a sword and Percy kills Mrs. Dodds. After this, all of

Percys classmates think that Mrs. Dodds never existed. Percy thinks he might be going crazy,

but suspicious activity from Grover leads him to think otherwise.

One night, Grover comes to Percys house, and says that Percy and his mother are in

trouble and that they must escape. Percy notices that Grover has goat legs, meaning that he is a

satyr. On the way to a place called Camp Half-Blood, they are attacked by a Minotaur. Percys

mother tells Percy and Grover to press onto the camp. She attempts to distract the Minotaur, but

it grabs her and she disappears in a shroud of light. Percy then kills the Minotaur with one of its

own horns.

Percy wakes up three days later in Camp Half-Blood and learns that he is a demigod: half

human, half god. He is brought to the Hermes house where all demigods not claimed by their

god parent go to. He meets Mr. D (Dionysus) who is the leader of the camp, and learns that Mr.
Brunner (the teacher who helped him) is actually the famous centaur Chiron. During a brutal

game of Capture The Flag, Percy is claimed as a son of Poseidon, which shocks all the other

campers. Many years ago, the three eldest gods (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades) took an oath to not

have any demigod children, and Percy shows a clear violation to the oath.

He is soon tasked with retrieving the stolen master lightning bolt of Zeus, and chooses to

take Grover and Annabeth Chase (a daughter of Athena) with him to Hades who is the suspected

thief. They travel west to Los Angeles where the entrance to Hades realm is. They encounter

many monsters on the way including Medusa, Echidna and the Chimera, and more Furies. Ares

(the god of war) aids them on the way giving them a backpack of supplies.

They reach the realm of Hades, and Hades accuses Percy of stealing the master bolt and

his own Helm of Darkness. The master bolt is revealed in the backpack that Ares gave to Percy.

They quickly escape, and Ares confronts Percy. Percy wins the battle, and Ares gives up the

Helm of Darkness.

Back at Camp Half-Blood, Luke Castellan (one of the campers) is revealed to be working

for Kronos who told him and Ares to steal the master bolt and Helm of Darkness. Luke tries to

persuade Percy into joining him, but Percy refuses. Luke tries to kill Percy, but escapes. Percy

chooses to return to school to be with his mother who didnt die, but was a hostage of Hades.

Percy is still worried about Luke and Kronos being on the loose.

For my final assignment, I will be doing the character of Grover Underwood, Percys

satyr friend. He was one of my favorite characters when I was reading the book, and I think he
would be a fun challenge to create a makeup for because he is a mythological character.

According to riordan.wikia.com, Grover is described as a tall satyr with curly brown hair,

brown eyes, small horns, Caucasian skin, a wispy beard and hairy brown goat legs. This is a

generalized statement made from observations throughout the books found on a fan website.

There are several aspects with this appearance that I can manipulate using makeup.

Since he is described as tall, I will use contour to make my face appear taller. He is a

generally sweet and upbeat but worrisome person. To express this physiognomy, I will try to

emphasize the sweeter aspect of Grover by making the eyes and mouth pop to show happiness.

To get the wispy beard, I will use the crepe hair technique using mainly browns on the center of

my chin; almost like a goatee. To get the horns, I will use putty to secure and blend the small

horns onto my forehead. For my new makeup technique, I would like to use prosthetic ears

blended with makeup to create a pointy ear effect.

It will definitely be a challenge, and will put my new-found skills of makeup to the test.

But I think I am capable of doing it, and the end result will look really amazing.
