Big Ideas There are two ways to divide the Earth into two halves: longitude
and latitude.
Water and land cover the Earths surface.

Essential Questions What is longitude?

What is latitude?
What percent of the Earth is covered in water?
What percent of the Earth is covered in land?
What percent of Earth is inhospitable to humans?
What percent of Earth is hospitable to humans?
PA/Common (math) MO4.A.F1.1.1.1- Recognize and generate equivalent
Core/Standards fractions
3.3.4.A2- Identify basic properties and uses of Earths materials
including rocks, sols, water, and gases of the atmosphere
3.3.4.A4- Recognize Earths different water resources, including
both fresh and saltwater. Describe phase changes in the forms of
water on Earth

Objective Through cutting apples SWBAT identify the difference between

longitude and latitude.
Bloom's Taxonomy SWBAT identify how much of Earth is covered in both water and
land.
Webb's Depth of SWBAT identify how much of our land is hospitable and
Knowledge (DOK) inhospitable to humans.

Formative & Formative assessment will be observed by how the students

Summative identify the parts of the apple discussed throughout the lesson
Assessment (longitude vs latitude, components of the Earths surface)
Evidence Summative assessment will be observed by a review to conclude
the lesson; students arent able to eat their apple until they have
answered a question correctly.

Students Google earth app

Framework for 21st

Century Learning
Accommodations, Students will have access of globe instead of Google earth app.
Modifications Students will be seated in the front of the classroom.
Students will be given the option to take notes during apple
activity because it may help ensure his memory in the long run.

Explicit Big Idea Statement

Instructions Earth can be divided using longitude and latitude; land and water
are the components of the Earths surface.
Essential Questions Statement
This lesson will cover the difference between longitude and
latitude, what percent of land and water make up the Earth, and
how much of the land is hospitable or inhospitable to humans.
Objective Statement
Through cutting apples SWBAT identify the difference between
longitude and latitude, the amount of land and water within Earth,
and how much of the land is hospitable to humans.
Transition
Ask a few student volunteers to distribute apples, plastic knives,
and paper plates to the rest of the students
Key Vocabulary
Longitude- the angular distance of place east or west
Latitude- the angular distance of a place north or south

Lesson Procedure PreAssessment of Students

Does anyone know the difference between longitude and
latitude?
(if no one does) How about can someone tell me the difference
between something being vertical and horizontal.
Modeling of the Concept
First I will explain the difference between longitude and latitude
Next I will demonstrate how to properly cut the apple with the
plastic knife. For this activity the apple will be cut to demonstrate
latitude (parallel with the stem).
Students will mirror what part of the apple I cut for the rest of the
activity.
Guiding the Practice
After the apple is simply cut in half, Ill have the students look at it
from the side and notice the skin. This is similar to how deep our
oceans are in correlation with the core of the Earth.
Next we will cut the two halves into fourths. I will then ask the
students how much they think represent the amount of water
covering the Earth (answer: )
The remaining fourth represents the amount of land on the Earth.
We will then cut this fourth in half; one piece represents the land
that is hospitable and the other is inhospitable land for humans to
live.
We will then cut one of the remaining 1/8 pieces into fourths. I wil
then explain one of these pieces represents farmland. The other
piece represents our drinkable water.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will then observe our Earth via the Google Earth app.
Transition
Students will throw away trash and clean desks if necessary.
Reading Materials computer
Technology iPad/cell phones
Equipment
Supplies
Evaluation of the Formative assessment will be observed by how the students
Learning/Mastery identify the parts of the apple discussed throughout the lesson
of the Concept (longitude vs latitude, components of the Earths surface)
Summative assessment will be observed by a review to conclude the
lesson; students arent able to eat their apple until they have answered a
question correctly.
Formal Evaluation
To conclude the lesson students will not be able to eat apple slices
until they answer a question correctly in reference to the lesson
they just under went.
Informal Evaluation
Student will be observed throughout the lesson in how they
answer questions while cutting their apples.

Closure Summary & Review of the Learning

Review questions on key vocabulary terms.
