Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: McKenzie Stafford Date: 12/3/17

Grade and Topic: 2nd Math Length of Lesson: 2 hours and 50 minutes

Mentor Teacher: Brain T. Johnson School: University of Memphis IDT-4000

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

2.MD.D.10 Draw a pictograph and a bar graph (with intervals of one) to represent a data set with up to
four categories. Solve addition and subtraction problems related to the data in a graph.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Students will perform a survey among their peers in order to collect data for their bar graph.
Students will master the skills of putting together a bar graph, and knowing how the bar graph looks.
Students will be able to transfer data from Excel to the bar graph.
Students will gain social skills by talking with peers for this survey.
Students will gain understanding of how the software Excel works, by logging data into the software.
Students will learn how to use Prezi by creating a Prezi with their bar graph.
Students will research the different things they have picked for their bar graph.
The goals of this lesson will be that students will become proficient in using the Web 2.0 website, Excel,
and Prezi.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Common Core Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.D.10
Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four
categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in
a bar graph. ISTE Standard: Creative Communicator 6b- Students create original works or responsibly
repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.

MATERIALS:
Computer and Smart Board
Technology will be integrated in this lesson by using Excel to log data collected from peers, Web
2.0 to create a bar graph, and Prezi to create a presentation with the bar graph. Websites need:
https://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/default.aspx?ID=3bc9e688dcb2409a89324e79724f6b09 and
https://prezi.com/. The students will also need a computer with the software Excel on it. Examples of
what student work should look like will be attached below.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

One key concept of this lesson is to have students become comfortable with using technology to create
graphs, and a Prezi presentation. One key concept is that students will become proficient with using the
software application that is Excel. Another key concept is that the students master the skill of graphing
things on a bar graph.
The vocabulary that will be used in this lesson are: Excel, Prezi, bar graphs, and survey.
This lesson builds on the previous lesson of learning how to create bar graphs on paper. The previous
lesson also included keeping a running total on an Excel spreadsheet.
We will continue to look back at this lesson for the rest of the year. We will be making different types of
graphs, so this bar graph will build us up for the harder types of graphs we learn how to create.
I will need to plan a differentiated lesson if I have a student who has a learning disability that makes it
hard to type words or read words. I could have this student do everything with pictures instead of typing
the words.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: To make students motivated for this new technology based lesson, I will let them create
the bar graph with whatever they wish to track. They can do food, sports, colors, or whatever they want
to.
Procedures:
To begin this lesson I will introduction the lesson to the students. I will tell them that they will be
using a Web 2.0 activity to create a bar graph, and I will do an example bar graph on the smart board. I
will then explain that they will be using Excel to keep a running total for their bar graph, and will show
an example of an Excel spreadsheet. Lastly, I will explain that they will be putting their finished bar
graph on a Prezi to show what they learned from this technology based lesson. This shall take about 30
minutes. I will then direct my students to go to the lab top cart located in the classroom, to get a
computer to work with. This shall take 10 minutes. After all students have a computer I will then ask the
students to log in, and access Excel. This shall take 5 minutes. When all the students are on Excel, I will
then tell them they will be doing a survey on their classmates about whatever they choice. I will tell
them they must pick 5 different things to ask their classmates, and explain they must keep a running
total. The students should research the different topics they have picked for their bar graph, and make
sure they are appropriate for the class. This shall take 15 minutes. After all students understand what to
do with Excel, I will direct them to the website to make the bar graph. I will do this by showing a step
by step on the white board. This shall take 5 minutes. I will also do a walk-through of how to create the
bar graph on the Web 2.0 website, so the students understand how to create their bar graph. This shall
take 10 minutes. After all the students have the material they need on their computer, they will then be
allowed to start their surveys with their classmates. The students will walk around the room, and a
collect the date for their excel spreadsheet. This shall take 30 minutes. I will be walking around the
classroom to insure that the students are logging their data correctly, and are doing the assignment
correctly. After the students have logged their information into Excel, they can then start their bar graph.
Students will transfer their data from Excel to their bar graph. They will get to design all the details of
their bar graph to make it personal to them. I will walk around the classroom, and help students who
may need help. This shall take 30 minutes. After all bar graphs are done the class will transfer them to a
Prezi presentation. We will walk through the Prezi presentations together, so the students will be
creating theirs as I am showing them on the smart board. The students will be able to add whatever they
like to their Prezi along with what they learned. This shall take 30 minutes.
Closure: To close this lesson I will have students share with the class their results of their bar graph. I
will also have students present their Prezis with the class, and explain what they learned from this
lesson.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: I will be using this check list as my students are working on this project to give
their final grade.

MODIFICATIONS:
Students who did not master this skill will be given extra practice to work on at home, so that they can
be proficient with Excel, Bar Graph creator, and Prezi. They will also be given a chance to redo the
project at home for extra points.
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who are ready for enrichment, however
enrichment modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
