Question 1

Using examples, briefly describe implications of utilizing social media to communicate and

collaborate within the field of education.

Technology has led to a greater sense of globalization where the entire world is connected

around the clock seven days per week. At the center of this technological revolution is social

media, which Burnett and Merchant broadly define as technologies that enable communication,

collaboration, participation and sharing (Hughes, 2009, p. 5 in Burnett and Merchant 2011, p.

43).

Positives

1. Far reaching able to communicate with colleagues outside your usual direct frame of

reference. The world of educators is at your fingertips.

2. Social networking teaches students skills theyll need to survive in the business world.

Being able to create and maintain connections to many people in many industries is an

integral part of developing a career or building a business.

3. The ease and speed with which users can upload pictures, videos or stories has resulted in

a greater amount of sharing of creative works. Being able to get instant feedback from

friends and family on their creative outlets helps students refine and develop their artistic

abilities and can provide much needed confidence or help them decide what career path

they may want to pursue

Negative

1. Issues of credibility. The opinions and ideas shared on social can originate in any source

that may be difficult to verify.

2. The degree to which private information is available online and the anonymity the

internet seems to provide has made students forget the need to filter the information they

post. Many colleges and potential employers investigate an applicants social networking

profiles before granting acceptance or interviews. Most students dont constantly evaluate

the content theyre publishing online, which can bring about negative consequences

months or years down the road.

Question 2

Discuss the social, legal and ethical issues associated with using social media in education.

Social and ethical issues in education

Several recent studies have shown that, the use of social media is a medium in which students

use to bully other students based on their academic performance in school. When the students

have failed or have performed poorly other students resorted to use social media to get at them.

According to McGinnis 2015, the use of technology in the classroom, using social media

websites, to create actively engaged lessons also creates ethical problems that must be

addressed. The degree to which confidential information is available online and the anonymity

the internet seems to provide has made students forget the need to filter the information they

post. Many colleges and potential employers investigate an applicants social networking profiles
before granting acceptance or interviews. Most students dont constantly evaluate the content

theyre publishing online, which can bring about negative consequences months or years down

the road.

Teachers are viewed as role models. Whatever a teacher posts represents themselves and the

school user name is linked to them. Social media provides teachers another avenue of

conversation and collaboration with parents. Teachers should discuss with parents the purpose

and content of the web pages and gain permission for students to participate in postings.

Legal issues in education

Plagiarism- is when someone present someone elses work or ideas as their own without

acknowledgement. Plagiarism maybe intentional or unintentional. Under the regulations for

examinations, intentional or reckless plagiarism is a discipline offence which may come in the

form of legal actions that has to face by the perpetrators.

Question 3

How will this innovative approach impact traditional pedagogical norms?

This innovative approach will take the focus away from teachers. The classroom can no longer

be teacher centered where teacher is dispenser of all knowledge. This approach would make any

classroom that is not child centered or child friendly.
