Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process is used in fabrication of structures and pressure part due
to the advantages like higher weld metal deposition rate and requirement of lower welder skill. It
also offers good quality of weld in versatile positions. This makes it attractive for apply
automation, thereby use an experimental method for ascertaining the welding process
qualification. Present reporting is for an experimental work that is carried out for using GMAW
process with an articulator capable of controlling the welding speed. Experiments are carried out
using ASME section -IX as a reference guideline by developing welding process specification and
qualifying welding procedure accordingly. Weld samples are prepared with control of heat input
over a range of voltage and current over a range of speed of welding. Test results of the welded
samples satisfies the requirements for quality desirables in accordance with ASME section IX.
Welding without welder is the feature of this experimental work. Outcome of experimental work
is to validate the capability of articulator to provide sound quality of weld, further to identify an
effective range of welding speed, welding current and voltage with a constraint maximum
allowable heat input. Details of the experimental methodology used for achieving the
requirements is reported in this research reporting. Aim of taking up this work is to provide a
technology that supports small scale enterprises to have a higher productivity with sound quality
of weld.
