Summary

Observation

1. Dismissal of employee without due process. The main male character

(Javier) was dismissed from his job without due process when he dated
Katey.
2. Employer controls the personal decisions of its employees. Kateys
family was pressured to meet the standards of her fathers employer. They
have to be very careful of their actions and decisions, not just things that are
related to her fathers job but including personal choices.
3. Controlled actions. Katey is anxious about her decisions not to disappoint
her parents. Since their family is staying in the same place where her father
works, she has to be very careful. The setup where the son of the owner
happens to be her suitor made it a lot harder for her. She was pressured by
her mother to get along with the son of the owner.

Differentiation

In theory, before the employee is dismissed from his or her job there should
be proper deliberation. Regardless of the degree of violation, the employee must be
given a chance to speak for himself. In reality, some employers dismiss employees
without due consideration of the correct and reasonable sanctions. Sometimes, even
personal grudges are used to terminate an employee.

In theory, employer has no right to invade to the personal lives of its

employees or influence their decisions so long as it is not affecting their work.
Employees can freely make their decisions for their family or transactions outside or
not related to their job. However, in reality some employees especially those you
stay in within the workplace have to consider the opinion of their employers.

In theory, employees family can make their own independent decisions. The
employer should not get involved with the decisions of the members of the family of
their employees. In practice, some employers tend to interfere with their employees
personal lives. They even pose a threat once their opinion is not considered or
rejected.
Reflection

As an employer or manager we should be considerate of the personal lives of

our employees. We should know that there is a boundary between work and the
personal lives of our employees. We may give suggestion or state our opinion about
the personal lives of our employees, give that our intention is to motivate our people
and not to control their lives and make ours better.

The way the mother of the main character reacts, she is so pressured of
pleasing her husbands employer. She also has this desire of living a classy life. She
sacrificed what she loves and she also wants her daughter to make the same
decision. Relating this to human resource management, this is not right. Controlling
someone to earn benefit out of it and make that person suffer is a foul. We should let
our employees choose what they want so long as it will not affect their job.

For me, the movie teaches us to live our lives the way we wanted it to be. We
should also let other live their lives the way they wanted it to be. The more we control
our actions the more it will be harder for us to express ourselves. We should be like
a fluid that will shift its figure in order to fit in the container.
Devil Wears Prada
Summary

Observation

1. Work overload. Due to the work standards implemented in the company and
the huge demand of skills required in the industry, employees have to work
beyond their standard workload.
2. High standard work environment. The employer is very critical to details
and requires her employees to perform all the tasks perfectly.
3. Work load that is not in line with the contract. The employees, specifically
the secretaries work beyond their normal or usual workload.
4. Huge gap between the employer and employee. The boss established a
very huge gap between her and her employees. Employees are all afraid of
her because shes so strict and very critical to details. She expects everyone
to deliver everything she says.
5. Punishment over rewards. Employees mistakes are often recognized by the
boss and tend to neglect the good performance of the employees. She resists
tapping her employees for a job well done and nagged at them every time her
employees fail to give what she wants.

Differentiation

There is no clear statement or act that would explain the workload given to the
secretaries thats why cannot firmly prove that the boss became abusive of her
authority. However, the way the characters play their role, the secretaries work
everything what their boss says. Somewhat making the environment so stressful to
everyone. In reality, some employees are expected to work beyond their contract
given that there should be proper and fair remuneration. Some industry may require
stipulation on their contract but should not go beyond the limits set on the labor code.

The movie shows how complicated and demanding the fashion industry is.
The boss requires everyone to deliver output as perfect as possible. Shes also very
keen to details making her employees suffer to meet her standards. In reality, the
employer should be considerate about the ability of their employees and motivate
them properly, with right reward system and sanctions in case of misbehavior.

In theory, the workload of employees should be stated clearly on their

contract. Anything beyond their workload should be explained properly and
sometimes should have additional remuneration. In reality, due to the need of
employees, they have to work beyond the workload stated on their contract.
Sometimes, they are not even paid correctly.

In theory, the employer should establish firm and good relationship with his or
her employees. She should know how to motivate her people, give rewards and
reasonable sanctions if mistakes are done. In reality, not all but some employers limit
interaction with their employees. Only those who are directly supervising the
employees make efforts in motivating them.

In theory, rewards and punishment are ways in motivating people to show

results and limit them from misbehaving. However, rewards should be emphasized
more than punishment because people basically went to work to show results and
not to misbehave. People are more motivated to work if they will be recognized for a
job well done, in words or in money. On the other hand, in reality some managers
dont see these as motivating strategies, some consider these as standards and
neglect its effect to the employees.

Reflection

Every individual who works in an organization has his or her personal

reasons. A manager should be able to understand the factors that would satisfy the
personal reasons of his or her employees without compromising the organizational
goals. A manager should not force anyone to change; he or she should help his or
her people to change. He or she should help his or her people to adapt with the trend
and need of the industry.

Job satisfaction can be earned if the manager knows how to dig deep within
the reasons why his or her employees are working. The strategies should be
formulated in consideration with employees ability and be personal. Employees
should be treated correctly and fairly in order to keep them. Organization should
work as a team, not a one man ship.
