Types of Cancer
Carcinomas begins in the skin or the tissue
that covers the surface of internal organs and
glands and forms solid tumors. E.g. Prostate,
breast, lung, and colorectal cancer.
Sarcomas begins in the tissues that support
and connect the body. It can develop in fat,
muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, blood or
lymph vessels, cartilage, or bone.
Leukemia is a cancer of the blood. It begins
when healthy blood cells change and grow
uncontrollably. The four main types are acute
lymphocytic, chronic lymphocytic, acute
myeloid, and chronic myeloid leukemia.
Lymphoma is a cancer that begins in the
lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a
network of vessels and glands that help fight
infection. Two main types include Hodgkin
and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Can Cancer be inherited?
Some cancers can run in families, but
cancer isnt passed on from parent to
child the same way that height and eye
color are. While some cancers do have
genetic risk factors, most people with
cancer didnt inherit it, nor do they pass
it on to their children.
Symptoms & Signs of Breast Cancer
Starting at age 50, both men and women should
follow one of these testing plans:
Colonoscopy every 10 years
Stool DNA test every 3 years
Breast Cancer Screening test for women:
Cervical cancer testing should start at age 21.
Women under age 21 should not be tested.
Women between the ages of 21 and 29 should
have a Pap test done every 3 years. HPV testing
should not be used in this age group unless its
needed after an abnormal Pap test result.
Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should
have a Pap test plus an HPV test (called co-
testing) done every 5 years. This is the preferred
approach, but its OK to have a Pap test alone
every 3 years.
Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to
start annual breast cancer screening with mam-
mograms (x-rays of the breast) if they wish to do
so.
Cancer can happen at
any age, but more
than 3 out of every 4
cancers are found in
people older than 55.
People of all racial
and ethnic groups can get cancer.
Cancer isnt a punishment for things you did or
didnt do. Dont blame yourself. Its painful,
and it rarely helps. Its almost never possible to
know exactly what caused the cancer. Focus
instead on taking good care of yourself now,
both your body and your mind.
Cancer is a group of more than 100 different
diseases, characterized by the uncontrolled, ab-
normal growth of cells. These cells form a lump
or mass called a tumor, which can be either can-
cerous or benign. Cells are the basic units that
make up the human body. Cancer begins when
genetic changes impair the orderly process of
cell building, and cells begin to grow at an un-
controllable rate. A cancerous tumor is malig-
nant meaning it can grow and spread to other
parts of the body. A benign tumor grows but
does not spread to other parts of the body.
