REPORT ON SOIL INVESTIGATION WORK FOR PROPOSED NEW ASSEMBLY HALL - C AT PLOT
NO. A-1/1, MIDC INDUSTRIAL AREA, SHENDRA, AURANGABAD, MAHARASHTRA.
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 PROJECT
This soil investigation work , whose results are being presented

herewith, has been conducted for the New Assembly Hall - C Building being
proposed to be constructed by the project authorities at their
site situated at Plot no.
A - 1/1 , MIDC Industrial Area , Shendra , Aurangabad( Maharashtra ).
A site plan is being enclosed indicating the location of proposed

building and investigation points.
1.2 AIM OF SOIL INVESTIGATION
Soil investigation has been conducted at the site in order to

evaluate the parameters required for design of foundations.
These parameters are:
(a) Type of foundation on which the proposed super structure

will be supported.
(b) Depth of foundation, and
(c) Allowable bearing pressure at the founding level.
To evaluate these parameters, various engineering properties of the

sub-soil have been studied.

1.3 SCOPE OF WORK
The stipulated scope of work comprised of following:
1. Mobilisation of equipment and personnel to the site and back.
2. Sinking boreholes ( 10 nos.) in the subsoil down to refusal

strata levels , observing ground water table levels if encountered
down to termination depth , conducting required field and laboratory
tests and their analysis.
3. Preparation and submission of technical report in triplicate.
2. INVESTIGATIONS CONDUCTED
2.1 INSITU TESTS
Exact locations of field testing points have been marked at the site
as per directions of project engineers. These locations have been designated
as BH 1 to BH 10 in this report.

2.1.1 BOREHOLES
Following operations have been carried out during the progress of

boreholes:
(a) Augering with the help of shell and auger technique down to
termination depth.
(b) Standard penetration tests.
(c) Collection of oil samples.
The ten boreholes have been terminated on encountering refusal strata level
at following depths :

2.2 LABORATORY TESTS AND RESULTS
Following tests have been conducted on various soil samples in the

laboratory:
(a) Particle size Distribution.

(b) Liquid and plastic limits.
(c) Shear Tests.

3. OBSERVATIONS
Following points are observed from results

obtained so far :
(a) Grain size distribution curves plotted from sieve and

hydrometer analysis indicate that the sub-soil strata in this site
predominantly comprises of coarse sandy soil mixed with gravels and
boulders down to the refusal level which ranges from 0.12 to 1.15 m in
the ten boreholes.
Presence of refusal strata was confirmed by trial pit excavation too.

Considering the uniformity of the observed results and the geology of the
project site area , it can be inferred that the underlying sub strata
comprises of rocky strata only.
(c) The sub-soil strata is nonplastic in nature as indicated by

atterberg limits' tests results.
(d) Standard penetration test results indicate very high penetration

resistance chracteristics at the refusal level.
4. DISCUSSIONS AND ANALYSIS
For designing the foundation system, the following parameters are

required :
(a) Suitable type of foundation on which the proposed super-structure

can be supported.
(b) Depth of these foundations, and
(c) Allowable bearing pressure at the founding level corresponding to

various footing sizes.

4.1 TYPE OF FOUNDATION
Type of foundation to be adopted for a particular structure depends

upon the loading intensity at the foundation level and the configuration of
loading points.
Considering the anticipated loads, proposed project buildings can

be supported over isolated / strip foundations.
4.2 DEPTH OF FOUNDATION
Foundations for the proposed project buildings will be placed at a

depth of 120 cms. below the existing ground level.
Above recommended depth is safe against shear failure.
4.3 ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURE
Following criteria have been adopted for evaluation of allowable

bearing pressure values:
1. Standard penetration test results

2. Shear strength criterion
Intermediate shear failure condition as per I.S. 6403 has been

considered for deducing shear strength value.
Allowable settlement values of 50 mm has been considered for

allowable bearing pressure computation .

Q = 0.4 ( 2/3 c Nc + q ( Nq - 1 ) + 0.375 r B Nr)
Cohesion, c = 0.00 Kg / sq.cm.
Angle of shearing resistance, O = 32 degrees
Bearing capacity factors :
Nc = 27.28 , Nq = 16.53 , Nr = 20.51
Overburden density , r = 1.70 gms./cc.
Overburden pressure , p = 0.204 kg./sq.cm.
Shear strength , Q = 1.79 kg./sq.cm.

IV. RECOMMENDATIONS
Adopt, Qnet = 1.79 kg./sq.cm.
Say 1.75 kg./sq.cm.
Based upon the above, the recommendations are being provided as

follows:

II. Depth of foundation : 120 cms. below the existing ground

III. Allowable Bearing Pressure
Following net allowable bearing pressure values can be adopted

corresponding to various foundation widths at above recommended depth :

For intermediate foundation widths, bearing capacity values may

be linearly interpolated.
