TheoldestartifacteverfoundintheProvinceofPampangaisa5000yearold
stoneadzefoundinCandaba.Itissaidtobeatoolusedinbuildingboats.
Earthenwareandtradewaredatingbackto1500BChavealsobeenfoundin
CandabaandPorac.[4]Farmingandfishingwerethemainindustriesofthe
Kapampanganpeople.

KapampanganshaveplayedadynamicyetconflictingroleinPhilippinehistory.It
wastheKapampangansofMacabebewhowerethefirsttodefendtheLuzon
EmpirefromSpanishdominationin1571.[5]YetitwastheKapampangansthatthe
SpaniardsreliedontodefendtheirnewcolonyfromtheDutch.Itwasatthistime
that"oneCastillanplusthreeKapampangans"wereconsideredas"fourCastillans"
aslongtheygallantlyservedinthecolonialarmedforces.Suchbehaviourearned
themthestereotypeofbeingquislingsinexchangeforpersonalwealthandself
aggrandisementallthroughoutthearchipelago.[5]Aftertheirsuccessfulbattle
againsttheDutchin1640,onlyKapampanganswereallowedtostudysidebyside
withtheSpaniardsinexclusiveSpanishacademiesanduniversitiesinManila,by
orderofGovernorGeneralSebastinHurtadodeCorcuera.[2]In1896,
Kapampanganswereoneoftheprincipalethnicgroupstopushandfuelthe
PhilippinerevolutionagainstSpain.YetitwasalsotheKapampangansof
MacabebethatfiercelydefendedthelastSpanishgarrisonagainstthe
revolutionaries.

WiththeoutbreakofWorldWarII,Japaneseplanesinvadedthemainprovinceof
PampangaandattackedtheUnitedStatesAirBaseatClarkFieldinAngeles,
PampangaonDecember8,1941.LaterJapanesesoldiersenteredtheprovinceof
Pampangaon1942andtheJapaneseOccupationformallybegan.

ManyKapampangansjoinedagroupofstrongholdsoldiersthatsurvivedthe
invasionandofficiallytrainedunderthe31stInfantryDivision,Philippine
CommonwealthArmy.USAFFEwasstationedinPampangaonJuly26,1941
beforetheJapaneseOccupationtoJune30,1946.AftertheBattleofBataanin
1942,someKapampangansoldiersoftheUSAFFE31stInfantryDivisionfought
fouryearsofbattlesagainstJapanesetroops.AfterthefallofBataanonApril9,
1942,manyKapampangansoldiersoftheUSAFFE31stDivisionsurrenderedto
theJapaneseandthenparticipatedintheDeathMarchofBataanDeathMarch
fromMariveles,BataantoCapas,Tarlac.

ManyKapampangansjoinedtheguerrillaresistancefightersoftheHukbalahap
Communistresistance.ManyKapampanganguerrillasandHukbalahapcommunist
groupsfoughtfouryearsofinsurgencyduringtheJapaneseOccupationandalso
foughtsidebysidewithalliedforcesinthemainprovinceofPampanga,helping
localtroopsofthePhilippineCommonwealthArmyandincomingPhilippine
Constabulary3rdInfantryRegimentsstationedatthegeneralheadquartersin
PampangainoperationsinCentralLuzonfrom1942to1945againsttheImperial
Japanesetroops.Aftertheinsurgency,manyKapampanganguerrillasand
HukbalahapresistancegroupsabouttheretreatingbytheJapaneseandbefore
theliberationon1945fromthecombinedAlliedforcesandguerrillas.

coincidewiththebaptismofChrist.TheKapampanganNewYearorBayung
Banwathatwelcomesthecomingofthemonsoonsandthestartoftheplanting
seasonismadetocoincidewiththefeastofJohntheBaptist.ThecolourfulApung
IrufluvialprocessionofApalit,onceathanksgivingcelebrationinhonourofthe
river,hasbecomethefeastofSaintPeter.

ThemostdramaticfestivalscanbewitnessedduringtheMalayAldo,whichisthe
KapampanganexpressionoftheHolyWeek.Theseincludetheerectionofa
temporaryshrineknownasthepuniwherethepasionorthestoryofChrist's
sufferingischantedinarchaicKapampangan.ThemelodyoftheKapampangan
pasionwassaidtohavebeentakenfromtheirtraditionalepic,whoseoriginal
wordswerelostandreplacedbythestoryofChrist.ThehighlightoftheMalay
Aldocelebrationistheprocessionofthemagdarameorsasalibatbatpenitents
coveredinbloodfromselfflagellation.Someofthemevenhavethemselves
crucifiedeveryGoodFridayatthedriedupswampofbarrioCutudinSan
Fernando.

Kapampangancuisine,orLutungKapampangan,hasgainedafavourable
reputationamongotherPhilippineethnicgroups.SomepopularKapampangan
