Atherosclerosisisaconditionthatdevelopswhenasubstancecalledplaqueaccumulatesinthe
internalwallsofthearteries.Thisbuildupnarrowsthearteries,makingitdifficultforbloodto
flowthrough.Ifabloodclotforms,itcan/willstopthebloodflowinthatplaceleadingtoaheart
attackorstroke.1 ThisaffectsaGlobalscalebecausethisiskillingpeoplealloverandrecent
statisticsstatethatitis31%ofthetotaldeathsintheworld(17.7millionspeople).2 Foradult

existsseveralriskfactorsrelatedtoorcausedbycardiovascularldisease,buttherearesome
factorsyoucancontrol,whicharemodifiableriskfactors,andothersthatyoucannotcontrol
whicharecallednonmodifiableriskfactors.Theriskfactorsthatcanbecontrolledarean
individualbeingabletomanagetheirownstresswisely,diet,physicalactivity,smoking,high
bloodpressure,highcholesterol,diabetes,andobesity.Someoftheseexamplesofthe
nonmodifiableriskfactorsaredirectlyrelatedtogeneticsandgender.Someindividualsare

constanthealthyandbalanceddietcanbenefitinalongandhealthylife.Doingthisisthemost
commonwaytopreventcardiovasculardisease.Maintainingahealthydietcanprevent
cardiovasculardiseasebecauseconsumingreducedamountoffattyandhighcholesterolfoods
reducestheplaquebuildupwithinanindividualsarteries,whichpreventshighcholesterollevels.
Eatinghealthyalsopreventshighbloodpressure.Exercisingpreventscardiovasculardisease
becauseithelpsanindividualkeepahealthyweight.Weightcanaffectyourheartbyforcingit

Ultimately,thehealthydiethelpsbecausethechancesofgettinghighbloodpressureandhigh
cholesterollevelsaregreatlyreducedthankstothese3things.
