Activity This learning activity is composed of a series of interactive

activities for the kids about the Civil War time period. The
activities include drag and drop, matching and identification.
1. For 3 smart board slides, I will lead a lesson involving
the causes of the Civil War. This will include economic
effects, slavery and specific states apart of the Union
and Confederate.
2. The students will be taking down brief notes because
the bulk of the material was already learned the
previous day. These first few slides are mainly review.
3. I will then ask the students questions like what were
characteristics of people in the Union? The
Confederate? This will be to get them ready for the
identification game thats next.
4. Next, there will be 8 identification questions that the
students will answer. The identification questions
involve different characteristics of people in the Union
and Confederate and its a drag and drop interactive
activity.
5. Since its 8 questions, I will call 8 different students to
Pedagogy

the board to drag and drop the correct answers. Class

participation and helping out their peers will be
encouraged.
6. Once the 8 students identify the correct answers, we
will read the choices as a class and I will get a student
to tell me why that choice is correct.
7. The next activity is a drag and drop map identification.
The students will have to identify the specific Border
States, Free states and slave states. Since there were
about 35 different states to identify, I will break them
up into about 3 different groups and assign each group
to a category of states.
8. Each group will have about 2 minutes and 30 seconds
to identify the states and once everyone is finished, we
will check it as a class. We will go down each category
and make sure the states are in the correct spots.
9. The next activity involves my favorite concept, which
are the battles of the Civil War. There were 6 battles
and I will keep the kids in the 3 groups that they were
previously assigned and assign them 2 battles to come
up to the board and identify. This activity involves
going up to the board, pulling down reading a small
description and then placing it to the correct battle it
describes. Once everything is correct, we will check
them as a class.
10. The next activity calls for leaders of the civil war. This
activity lists 6 key figures during the Civil War and it
has the vortex, pin-wheel thing on the page. I will get 1
students from each group assigned to identify two of
the people and they have to place them in either the
North or South vortex circle. The great thing about
this is that they will immediately know if their
incorrect because it will throw the word back out. If
they are incorrect, the class and I will help them to pick
the correct answer.
11. The last activity is no actually a game. It lists the lasting
effects of the war. There are 3 pages with 4 different
answers that are hidden about the effects. I will first
get the kids to tell me some effects of the war aloud.
Then once they cant figure out anymore. Two students
(preferable a different one from the last activity) from
each group will come up to the board, reveal by
clicking on the number and reading the answer that
pops up.
12. If we run out of time on the last activity, I will then
click and read the responses.
13. Lastly, the class will be over and I will hand out a
review sheet so they will be ready for a quiz on the civil
a tomorrow.
