 PREFACE

Whats Wrong With Modern Music? Yes, what is wrong? And what is the

meaning of modern music? Modern music that I mean here is general music as the

means of associating in general. It might be talk about Dangdut music, Jaipong,

Keroncong, and others. But this time I am going to talk it spesifically about Pop music,

Rock and Heavy Metal that lately so loved by young people in their young world.

God did not prohibit us to be friend with everyone, He said that we must die if

we do not have any friend. Without friend we cant learn, work, and so much more. But,

we have to be selective in choosing a friend, and also in the way we choose the music

that we hear. bad friend destroyed good attitude. (1 Corinthians 15:33)

From learning some books that talks about modern music, and there are the

others source that I learn from, I was surprised that there is the negative effect of one of

music type. Then I collected all the information and facts to arranged it into this paper.

I am so grateful to Lord Jesus for He always lead me so that I can write this

paper to fulfill my English project. The purpose of this paper is to be a blessing for

young generation, so that they can be more careful in selecting their music to listen for,

and for the good in their future too. I hope that young generation will understand that

music can bring serious effect in humans life, positively but also negatively.

 CHAPTER I

1.1 Background

Music is a tool or medium for communication that have big impact. Some

people said that music have a black power. The others said that music have a spiritual

power that can bring a message under the humans subconscious. Yes, it is true that

music have a big impact in our life. But the most important thing is, in whose hands

music is used. God has made music for so many holy and positive purpose. But be

careful, the Satans is good enough too to used music in bad purpose that so opposite

with God purpose.

The picture above is the picture of some musicians especially rockers of the

world that died on their 27 ages.

1. Jimmy Hendrix: He tragically died in the apartment of his lover in London on

September 18, 1970 due to a combination of red wine and sleeping pills (which

reportedly had a stronger dose than expected).

2. Brian Jones: On July 3, 1969, after being kicked off by The Rolling Stones, a

guitarist called genius with slide tool, plus initially going to be the leader of the group,

was drowned in his home swimming pool.

3. Jim Morrison: On July 3, 1971, the iconic The Doors was found dead in his Paris

apartment bathtub due to heart failure. But the results of the autopsy actually never

issued the French Police.

4. Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan: Keyboardist and vocalist The Grateful Dead was killed on

March 8, 1973 due to excess liquor.

5. Janis Joplin: The soloist and singing for Big Brother and The Holding Company, died

on October 4, 1970 of a heroin overdose in a room at the Landmark Hotel in Los

Angeles, with a fresh syringe in his arm.

6. Robert Johnson: The legendary blues guitarist whose songs were recorded by Rolling

Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers Band and other classic rock

musicians, died in 1938 with the issue of selling themselves to demons.

Some time ago in an elementary school in the United State, a group of 6th graders asked

their music teacher about the anti-lyrics of a rock song. On the cover of the Venom

album record they are written as follows: "You are possessed by all the evil things of

the death of God that we demand, we spit on the Virgin Mary you worshiped, and sit in

the hands of the Devil kiz." In another album titled, Hell Awaits; by the band Slayer, the

lyrics clearly worship the cruel and cruel passions of the flesh. "The teacher carefully

and gently tried to explain it.The next day, a large number of parents called the principal

and accused him that a teacher was discussing Satanism with his studentsRock music

does present a large number of problems, for Christian parents. The lyrics are bad with

themes ranging from anger, sex, suicide, drugs, and death. Although the words sound

When parents hear and see these rock singers, they feel like burning their

albums, slamming their cassettes, and kicking them out of the family environment

forever. Although the response is understood, it does not solve the problem. The act will

even arouse children's curiosity about songs that are forbidden and may encourage

children to become dissidents.

Here are some real incident because of music. The name might be wrote in

others name for the privation of the object. Some of the names are vague and some are

not mentioned for the sake of the code of ethics. I apologize if there are similar names,

because it is really beyond my intentions.

 Lately Anton had stopped paying attention to his parents' advice he considered

fussy and preachy. With indifference, he closed his ears using earphones from his

walkman. Shaking his head, he locked himself in his room enjoying rock music.

Karen was raped in public toilets while a rock music scene took place. She is

like a hypnotist and just realized and regret after the show is over.

Within a week, 6 youths in Italy committed suicide in the same way, channeling

car exhaust fumes into their rooms while listening to rock music.

Hendra can not sleep without listening to rock music. He feels so attached, that

he is asked to be prayed for by a servant of God. After praying he felt and fell asleep.

now he can sleep without relying on the music again.

Steve is known as a pious child at home. But his life has changed and became

more apparent as their family moved into a new home. Steve's mother objected if she

was sticking rocker posters on the wall because the wall had just been painted. Steve

protested loudly by saying "If you(his mother) forbid to stick to these posters, I do not

want to do anything anymore, including going to school!" then his mother chooses to

budge rather than his son is out of school. Steve put her idol posters on the wall, just

above the headboard of her bed. Lapse of some time, how surprised that they find steve

who lay dead in front of the picture idolanya. He had committed suicide by shooting his

own palate to penetrate the brain, using his grandfather's rifle. During this time his

parents thinking hard about the cause of steve suicide. Only after they heard a lecture on

was true, Steve committed suicide because of the suggestion of certain rock music

through the rhythm and lyrics.

There are still many other cases that occur, such as those who have died from

drug overdose and alcohol, some are possessed by abortion, sexual misuse, and not the

few who die of heart attacks, caused by the rhythm of music that goes beyond healthy

decibels for humans.

The above events do not just happen abroad. In Indonesia, formerly at mick

jagger pacingasa in Jakarta, some cars destroyed in the Stadion Persib Bandung, when

there was rock performances, there was destruction of houses around the stadium.Some

people say that metal music is actually a demonic music. The influence of rock music in

Indonesia is not has very big impact like in abroad. However, does not the saying say,

"better prevent than cure?

According to police research, Rock and metal music from abroad has been

widely entered into Indonesia. That is the reason why I choose Whats Wrong With

Modern Music as the title of my paper.

1.5 Methodology

In English the term research is called (research), derived from the word (re)

means back and (to research) means to find or search. So (research) can be interpreted

to find or seek back. In this case research is a means to develop science, both

theoretically and practically. Research is a central part of science, which aims to better

know and deepen all aspects of life. Research is essentially a scientific activity to

acquire the true knowledge of a problem. Research is also often interpreted as

channeling the human curiosity to a problem with certain practices (such as examining,

investigating, studying, and studying carefully and earnestly) "to obtain something like

(reaching the truth, getting answers to a problem, knowledge, etc.). From the above

ideas it can be known about research methods, namely the study of the methods of

research, the science of tools in research. Thus the research method can be interpreted

that as a discussion that discussed the techniques used in a study. So it can be stated that

"the method is an absolute element in the research and development of science".

Departing from the above description, then in this study will explain the method used,

namely as follows:

The methode that used in this research is descriptive method. Descriptive

method is a method of researching the setatus of a group of people, an object, a set of

conditions, a system of thought, or a class of events in the present. The purpose of this

descriptive study is to make deskipsi, picture or painting in a systematic, factual and

accurate about the facts, traits and relationships between the phenomena investigated.

According to Whintney (1960), descriptive method is fact-finding with proper

interpretation. Descriptive research studies issues in society as well as procedures that

apply in society and certain situations, including on relationships, activities, attitudes,

views, and ongoing processes and the effects of a phenomenon . In descriptive method,

the researcher can just compare certain phenomena so that it is a comparative setudi.

sometimes researchers conduct a classification, as well as research on phenomena by

setting a setandar or a certain norm so that many experts call this descriptive method

with the name of normative survey (normative survey). With this descriptive method is

also investigated position (status) phenomenon or factor and see the relationship

between one factor with other factors. Therefore, descriptive method is also called status

study (satus study).

Descriptive method also wants to study the norms or setandar-setandar, so that

descriptive research is also called the normative survey. In descriptive method can be

researched normative problem together with problem of setatus and also make

comparisons between phenomena. Such studies are generally referred to as descriptive

studies or studies. The time perspective to be reached in descriptive research, is the

present time, or at least the time period still affordably in the respondent's memory.

2.1 Definition of Music

Music is a sound received by individuals or groups based on history, culture,

location and tastes. The definition of music is very broad, including:

- Music is the sounds captured by the senses of the listener.

- Music is a work of art with all its essential elements and supporters.

- Music is anything that is produced intentionally presented as music either by a person

or a group of humans.

The definition of music in Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia is:

- The science or art of composing tones / sounds, combinations, and temporal

relationships to produce a composition (sound) that has unity & continuity.

- The tone or sound is arranged in such a way that it contains rhythms, songs, and

harmony (especially those using the tools that can produce those sounds).

According to M. Soeharto in the book "Music Dictionary" explained that the notion of

music is the expression through the idea through sound, the basic elements of melody,

rhythm, and harmony with the supporting elements in the form of ideas, properties and

colors of sound.

Understanding music on wikipedia is the sound received by individuals and vary based

on the history, location, culture and tastes of a person.

 According to Aristotle, music has the ability as a recreational therapy, reconcile

a depressed heart and foster the soul of patriotism. In this day and age who does not

need music? Almost all people need music because music is a staple for every human

because music can make us feel enjoy, happy and comfortable.

Here is definition of music in Wikipedia. Music is an art form and cultural

activity whose medium is sound organized in time. The common elements of music are

pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo,

meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of

timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound).

Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these

elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques

ranging from singing to rapping; there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal

pieces (such as songs without instrumental accompaniment) and pieces that combine

singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek (mousike; "art of the

Muses").

In its most general form, the activities describing music as an art form or cultural

activity include the creation of works of music (songs, tunes, symphonies, and so on),

the criticism of music, the study of the history of music, and the aesthetic examination

of music. Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered

horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as "the

harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is

often ordered and pleasant to listen to. However, 20th-century composer John Cage

thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only

sound."

The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary

according to culture and social context. Indeed, throughout history, some new forms or

styles of music have been criticized as "not being music", including Beethoven's Grosse

Fuge string quartet in 1825, early jazz in the beginning of the 1900s and hardcore punk

in the 1980s. There are many types of music, including popular music, traditional

music, art music, music written for religious ceremonies and work songs such as

chanteys. Music ranges from strictly organized compositionssuch as Classical music

symphonies from the 1700s and 1800s, through to spontaneously played

improvisational music such as jazz, and avant-garde styles of chance-based

contemporary music from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Music can be divided into genres (e.g., country music) and genres can be further

divided into subgenres (e.g., country blues and pop country are two of the many country

subgenres), although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often

subtle, sometimes open to personal interpretation, and occasionally controversial. For

example, it can be hard to draw the line between some early 1980s hard rock and heavy

metal. Within the arts, music may be classified as a performing art, a fine art or as an

auditory art. Music may be played or sung and heard live at a rock concert or orchestra

performance, heard live as part of a dramatic work (a music theater show or opera), or it

may be recorded and listened to on a radio, MP3 player, CD player, smartphone or as

film score or TV show.

In many cultures, music is an important part of people's way of life, as it plays a

key role in religious rituals, rite of passage ceremonies (e.g., graduation and marriage),

social activities (e.g., dancing) and cultural activities ranging from amateur karaoke

singing to playing in an amateur funk band or singing in a community choir. People

may make music as a hobby, like a teen playing cello in a youth orchestra, or work as a

professional musician or singer. The music industry includes the individuals who create

new songs and musical pieces (such as songwriters and composers), individuals who

perform music (which include orchestra, jazz band and rock band musicians, singers

and conductors), individuals who record music (music producers and sound engineers),

individuals who organize concert tours, and individuals who sell recordings and sheet

music and scores to customers.

2.2 Definition of Modern Music

Music itself is a tool and means of communication media and its influence. Peter

Gammon in his book calls the magic of music. In other words, the music itself seems to

have supernatural powers. Jimmi Hendrix, the famous American rock singer since the

1960s, in LIFE magazine said: Music is a apiritual thing in its own. You can hypnotize

Indeed Jimmi has managed to attract many people, to the point that he died in 1970,

there are fans who say: "I can not live without him". The Great Caruso, a famous

(especially modern music) itself.

B. Definition of Rock Music

Rock music is one of the genres in the world's popular music treasures that are

usually dominated by vocals, guitar, drums, and bass. many also with the addition of

instruments such as keyboad, piano or synthesizer. Rock music usually has a strong beat

and is dominated by guitar, both electric and acoustic.

The foundations of rock music are rock and roll and rockabilly in the 50s. in the

late 60s there was a lot of mixing of other music genres with rock music. Folk music

mixed into Folk Rock, blues music mixed into Blues Rock and jazz into Jazz-Fussion

Rock. And in the 70s rock developed into several subgenres such as soft rock, hard

rock, heavy metal and punk. In the era of the 80s developed again some subgenre such

as glam metal, synth rock, trash metal, hardcore punk, alternative rock. In the 90s the

new subgenre was grunge style rock, britpop, indie rock, piano rock and nu metal.

Hard Rock

Genre of rock music rooted in the mid-60s music of garage and psychedelic rock

and much influence of the blues music. Hard rock dominated by many electric guitars,

bass guitars and drums. The role of guitarist is usually divided into two, namely lead

guitar and rythm guitar, guitar leads will display the guitar solo on some parts of the

song while the role of rhythm guitar more as a complement of lead guitar. Some of the

leading hard rock bands such as Aerosmith, Guns N 'Roses, Van Halen and Kiss.

Heavy Metal

Actually hard rock and heavy metal is not much different in terms of music so

many crossers border between the two, heavy metal music just faster in the music. This

music was spearheaded by led zeppelin, deep purple and black sabbath. successors such

as Judas Priest, Iron maiden, metallica, megadeth, Slayer, etc. The main theme of heavy

metal lyrics is about sex, violence, fantasy and mysticism.

Punk rock

This flow is more on the youth's rebellion against establishment. punk rock is

more of an ideology than a musical ability, as if we are listening to his songs of highly

pungent sex pistols and without harmonization even in his live performances are often

replaced behind the basalt because the original player is usually a heavy drummer and

already very inconsequential when acting on stage. Pioneers of this music is Ramones,

Glam Metal

 Often also referred to as Hair Metal because of the tendency of his long-haired

band personnel and his glamorous dress style and makeup. in glam metal music is not

much different from heavy metal just that there is a difference in the lyrics are more

likely to hedonistic such as sex problems, drinks and drugs. The bands that come into

this stream are motley crue, deff lepard, quiet riot, twisted sister, poison, cinderella,

warrant, bon jovi etc.

B. All Humans have a Musical Soul

In the history of music civilization has never been there who can interpret the

music clearly just from words alone. Music will only be understood when we enter the

world of music itself. Some are dissolving in the song only. Some are trying to learn

through concepts and musical instruments only. There are also experienced both, while

enjoying also make it a learning process. We always associate music with musicians and

connoisseurs. Actually the meaning of the word musician has become a misperception.

In the present era many individuals who declare themselves a musician just because

they have a band, know many songs, proud to imitate their favorite band, and some even

assume if you want to have a musical soul should be a course and music school. Is it

right? Is it just to have a band as a musician? Does getting to know a lot of songs and

knowing all types of music can guarantee someone's music?

The musical soul does not really have to be searched because all individuals are given

the gift of musical potential. Each of us from birth is given the opportunity to speak in a

musical. That is why any baby can be invited to dance, sing and try to follow the rhythm

or tap. Let's think about it, baby is holy.

Musicians are not limited to the rich. No need to drop out of music school. It

does not have to be famous. It does not have to be a legend. Try to close your eyes, if

without having to silence but there are musical voices, whatever the sound of music,

that's the soul of music. The real musician is the individual who when he is walking,

sleeping, dreaming, bathing, working, wherever he is, whatever he does is always

accompanied by notes. Every second is a tone although there is no musical instrument

to visualize it because every trace is a tone. Unfortunately, this era is require us to work,

earn money, housekeeping and other life demands make our music soul marginalized.

We have indeed grown up, but sanctity when we babies are still there. It's the same

when we all go to bed and wait for a beautiful dream.

C. How can music affect the brain?

All kinds of sounds or when the sounds in a regular sequence that we know with music,

will enter through the ear, then vibrate the eardrum, shake the fluid in the inner ear and

vibrate the haired cells in the Cochlea to the next through the Koklearis nerve to the

brain. First, Music will be received directly by Talamus, a part of the brain that

regulates emotions, sensations, and feelings, without first digested by the brain thinking

about good and bad as well as intelligence. Secondly: through the Hypothalamus affects

2.3 Positive Impact of Modern Music in humans daily life

Here is a list of positive musical influences:

1. Bringing people to worship God.

2. Helps to achieve concentration in thinking or learning.

3. Stimulate the child's brain skills (research shows that classical music that

contains the composition of the tone fluctuates between high notes and low

tones, will stimulate the C quadrant in the brain.As the age of 4 years, B and C

quadrants in the brains of children will grow up to 80% with the help of music).

4. Make it easy for us to memorize a long lyric or verse.

5. Helps relaxation in meditation.

6. Helps healing physical and mental healing.

7. Preparing the fetus and mother before delivery.

8. Stimulate the appetite.

9. Fertilize the plants.

10. Tame animals.

11. An effective means of conveying information or advertising.

A. Positive Impact of Rock Music on The Soul

Music does affect a lot of human life. Being a business commodity, feeling

disclosure or just as a mere entertainment. Including psychological conditions. But

what effect can be obtained if listening to rock music, such as rock or metal?

During this time, many people suspect metal is the music of people frustrated or

depressed. Rock music is also considered to encourage teenagers to always revolt in

the parents. Metal and rock equal drop out and gloomy future. In short, metal does

not have a positive impact.

If you agree with the above assumptions, be prepared to be disappointed. A

study by Stuart Cadwallader and Jim Campbell of the National Academy for Gifted

and Talented Youth University of Warwick in Coventry, England, says otherwise.

Metal or rock music has a positive impact on teenagers. They conducted this survey

on more than 1000 students aged 11 to 18 in the UK. The survey also shows that

metal fans are not entirely bleak future.

"During this time, many smart kids are associated with classical music and

nerds, this is the wrong stereotype, we see a group, even more stressed out with

classical music and books, they eliminate the stress with metal," Cadwallader said.

In the study, respondents were asked to mention family background, education,

hobbies, and media consumed. Once ranked, it turns out rock music and heavy metal

topped the top spot. Both are occupied pop music.

According to the study, some gifted and intelligent students use metal music to

reduce the stresses in everyday life. Includes stress relief by listening to metal.

Frustration and excess anger were easily overcome after enjoying the rock music.

"Perhaps the gifted students can forget the little stress and pressure by listening to

rock music, they can also eliminate the negative effects after enjoying it,"

Cadwallader said.

Is it true Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking listens to bands like Opeth to

relieve stress? Still hard to imagine. At least this proves wrong assumption about

metal and rock music. Students in the study could break if rock is not only

associated with drop out of school. Or a bleak future and crime alone.

B. Personality of someone who loves rock music

Believe it or not taste music and personality type was very closely related. Based

on a world-wide research, favorite music can be a mirror of a personality. Scientific

research is done Professor Adrian North, Dean of the Faculty of Psychology from

Heriot-Watt University. By involving tens of thousands of people around the world.

The most interesting finding from North's research is the similarity between

classical and heavy metal enthusiasts. "One of the most surprising is the similarity

between classical music fans and heavy metal. They are both creative, quiet but not

The effect rock music on the body: Listening to rock music can provide

adrenaline unlike other types of music. If you do not like to listen to rock music,
