1. Classroom Climate/Culture - Student Behavior

YES NO
X Intern communicates and maintains standards for appropriate classroom behavior.
X Intern anticipates and acts on potential classroom disruptions.
X Intern maintains positive classroom climate.
X Intern responds to student behaviors appropriately.
Comments: Whitney, you consistently respond to students in a warmly affirming way. Students feel comfortable sharing, but
also are meeting your expectations for their behaviors (such as raising hands, etc.) You also restated directions several
times and had the students repeat them to make sure everyone knew exactly what to do.

2. Instruction - Instructional Time

X Intern has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of the lesson or activity.
X Intern gets class started quickly.
X Intern uses available time for learning and keeps students on task.
Comments: Whitney, you began with a review of needs and wants. Students seemed to understand the difference based
on this quick check. Students were on task throughout the lesson.

3. Instruction - Instructional Planning and Presentation

X Intern establishes links with prior learning and experiences.
X Intern arranges learning activities to support standards.
X Intern appropriately uses a variety of teaching styles.
Comments: The text, Those Shoes, was a perfect text to choose for this lesson. You read with expression and appropriate
pace. To transition from listening to the story, you allowed the students to take a ten second stretch break. I am sure that the
students appreciated this chance to move. It helped them refocus for the needs/wants sorting activity on the SmartBoard.
The chance to pack their own suitcase seemed exciting to the students, and you explained how to do this activity very
effectively. It also provided a real-life connection.

4. Instruction - Instructional Monitoring

X Intern circulates to check performance and monitor progress.
X Intern varies level of questioning.
X Intern ensures that all students have the opportunity to participate.
Comments: You circulated while students were working on packing their suitcases, which gave you a chance to touch base
with every student to make sure they knew what to do.

5. Impact on Student Learning - Facilitating Instruction

X Intern establishes clear outcomes for learning.
X Intern communicates learning outcomes to students.
X Intern adjusts lesson based on student responses/ongoing assessment.
X Intern connects learning outcomes to the NCSCOS.
Comments: Your responses to each student were tailored to individual learning needs of each student to promote growth. A
few students needed reminding to count the items in their suitcase, but most understood the difference between a need and
a want.
6. Evaluation/Assessment - Instructional Feedback
X Intern provides feedback on the correctness or incorrectness of in-class work to encourage student growth.
X Intern affirms correct oral responses appropriately and moves on.
X Intern provides sustaining feedback after an incorrect response by probing, repeating the question, giving a clue,
or allowing more time.
Comments:
Strengths: Areas on which to focus:
Lesson had real-life connections Consider more text-based questions to the students
throughout the book (How do you think he was feeling
Appropriate and enriching text to accompany lesson when he saw other kids walk by in those shoes? What is
content a thrift store?) to help the students build schema and
understanding.
Clear expectations for student behavior
Use other shelter icons besides a house if you have
Warm, genuine manner with the students and positive students who live in an apartment building.
reinforcement used often

Modeling needs/wants in your suitcase. Did students
mostly take trips to the beach like you did? I wonder if it
would have been helpful to discuss different places to go?

Closing sharing was meaningful for the group! Maybe go
into a little more of a review about needs/wants.

Transitions
