1. Passenger Information System it is currently 99% manual process.

In Colombo forte station there is a digital time table and it is displaying all the information of
trains which are arriving and departing within the latest 2 hrs time. That shows number of the
train/ its arrival time/departing time/no. of the platform.

In other main stations like Kandy/ Galle , there are small scale digital information boards.
In all other stations the railway time tables are showing using manual charts/manually
manipulating clock dials.
This process is controlling by the station master.

Other important passenger information is ticketing fares. Most of stations they are having ticket
fare charts and passengers can see at the stations.

Other information like station Masters office/ Security/ inquiries are guided by the sign boards
which are displayed at railway station.

2. Accounting process - This is a totally manual process.

Everyday in each and every station, station masters manually enter to account book the revenue
of the day. (Sales of tickets of each type/sales)
Then this value is sending to the head office and this information is also entered by manually.
This process is lot of time consuming and if we need to know the total revenue of today of Sri
Lanka Railways, we need to wait approximately 2 month time.

Then all the budget allocations/ project payments are all done by manually except employees
salaries. For employees salary processing, there is a computerized system.

3. Timetabling how is it currently done This is also a manual computing method.

If we need to introduce a new train to the time table, firs we need to decide under what
category of the train is to be utilized.(Express or slow) Then we need to decide what are the
stations to be stopped. Then they preparing a graphical computing sheet showing that what are
the possible tracks available/ what are the vacant times to be train handling without clashes
(crossing /waiting at stations etc). After this series of computations, we can decide the exact
time for this new train, to be operated in productive manner.
