Lesson Plan

Grade and Topic: Grade 1, English Length of Lesson: 45 minutes for two days

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:


This lesson plan is part of a unit plan on recognizing features of a sentence.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Content Learning Goals and Objectives:
1. Given an iPad TLW access the app Print Concepts by Bugbrained and learn about features of a
sentence which include punctuation, capitalization, first and last words with a score of three out of four
on the rubric. (Blooms taxonomy: comprehension)
2. Given a handout on the basic features of a sentence, TLW rewrite the sentences including correct
sentence features with a score of three out of four on the rubric. (Blooms taxonomy: knowledge,
comprehension, analysis)
3. Given a computer and Wixie application, TLW create three sentences telling about their favorite place in
the world using correct punctuation and capitalization and will also design an image that goes with their
story with a score of three out of four on the rubric. (Blooms taxonomy: synthesis)

Student Participation:
o The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate a clear understanding of the organization
and distinguishing features of a sentence. Students write their own narratives using correct
sentence features and provide visual representations to go along with their work.

Technology Integration:
o Students will use the app Print Concepts on the iPad as a resource for the lesson on the features of a
sentence. Wixie software will be used to type, format, and add images to their personal narratives. Students,
upon completing this activity, will save their work to a shared folder for their class.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:


Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of the features of a sentence by providing visual and written
representations of the features of a sentence.
Academic language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of TN English Language Arts standard 1.0.
We will refer to the summary produced here as we continue to explore literacy.
I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready
for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:
Begin by writing three sentences on the white board.
Provide a brief summary of the basic features of a sentence.
Ask for volunteers to come up to the board and circle the first word of the sentence, underline any capital
letters, and draw a square around the ending punctuation.
For the next two days, students will be using their own words and images and achieve a better
understanding of how the features of a sentence are correctly used.

Procedures:

At the Computer (30 minutes)


Teacher Procedures:
1. After the introduction, distribute iPads to students and instruct them on how to access the app Printing
Concepts.
2. Instruct students on which activities to complete and to raise their hand after they are done with each activity.
3. Remind students to refer to the introduction while completing the lesson activities within the app.

Student Procedure:
1. Open the app Printing Concepts on the iPad.
2. Complete First and Last word, Capitals, and Punctuation activities.
3. Raise their hand when they need help or finished with the activities.

After the Computer (15 minutes)


Teacher Procedures:
1. Distribute handout.
2. Go over the instructions of the handout before they begin.

Student Procedures:
1. Complete the handout.
2. Turn it in to the Turn in Box when finished.

At the Computer (45 minutes)


Teacher Procedures:
1. Have students open the Wixie application on the computer.
2. Inform students on the assignment.
3. Monitor and assist as needed.

Student Procedures:
1. Open Wixie application
2. Write down three sentences about your favorite place in the world on a sheet of paper, including two reasons why
this is your favorite place.
3. Type the first sentence on the first page.
4. Create a digital drawing to go along with that image.
5. Repeat steps 3 and four for the remaining two sentences.
6. Make sure you included correct capitalization, punctuation, etc. in your sentences.
7. Save work under your name in the student share file.
8. Print a copy (optional).

Closure:
Students can volunteer to read their sentences to the class and show everyone their drawings from the teachers
computer on the projector. At the end of class, the teacher collects the Wixie illustrations, grades the handout, and
opens the class for any remaining questions.
