11th Grade
The student will demonstrate knowledge of the Civil War and Reconstruction
Era and their importance as major turning points in American history by
a) evaluating the multiple causes of the Civil War, including the role of the
institution of slavery as a principal cause of the conflict;
b) identifying the major events and the roles of key leaders of the Civil War
Era, with emphasis on Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant,
Robert E. Lee, and Frederick Douglass;
c) analyzing the significance of the Emancipation Proclamation and the
principles outlined in Lincolns Gettysburg Address;
d) examining the political and economic impact of the war and
Reconstruction, including the adoption of the 13th, 14th, and 15th
Amendments to the Constitution of the United States;
e) examining the social impact of the war on African Americans, the common
soldier, and the home front, with emphasis on Virginia;
f) explaining postwar contributions of key leaders of the Civil War.
This online class is an asynchronous source. The teacher will provide a
video lecture on the history of the civil war prior to the simulation activity.
After watching the video, the students will activate the online Civil War
simulation at www.wadsworth.com.
Students will access the wadsworth website via URL that is given at the end
of the video. This website has free historical simulations, so students will
not have to create an account prior to participating in the activity. The
simulation needs to be completed when started, because there is no way to
save the material they have started.
Students will begin this simulation by reading a short paragraph on the
different types people/lifestyles during the civil war. Then students will
choose if they wish to be a southerner, northerner, or Native American.
Then, they will participate in one of these roles throughout the simulation.
 Students will then go through different scenarios and decide on the best
solution for the event. After answering these different scenarios, students
will see if their choice was the best solution. By completing this simulation,
students will understand the difficulties people went through during the
civil war. This will also provide a review for certain topics that were
covered in the video prior to completing this activity.

After completing the civil war simulation, the student will complete the
questions for reflection and email it to their teacher to receive credit for
the assignment.
