This paper describes the development of a finite element model

used to numerically investigate the behavior of a single
uncovered fuel channel in severe core damage accidental
conditions. The beam element formulation was employed to
represent the ballooned pressure and calandria tubes that
plastically deforms during the thermal transient considered for
simulation. The objective of the study was to evaluate the
sensitivity of the finite element model results in relation with
several simulation and materials parameters: discretization
sizing, simulation time step, creep controls, Young's modulus
of elasticity and thermal expansion coefficient. The findings of
the simulations have shown the great importance of the model
calibration with experimental results before being used with
confidence in severe accidents analyses of CANDU type
reactors. This paper represents the first step of the authors in
developing a comprehensive procedure for thermal, hydraulic
and structural behavior of CANDU cores damage during severe
transients.

The objective of this paper was to study the phase change of

the debris formed on the CANDU 6 calandria bottom in a
postulated accident sequence. The molten pool and crust
formation were studied employing the Ansys Fluent code. Two
models using Large Eddy Simulation and Phase Change
Effective Convectivity Model (PECM) predict the conjugate,
radiative and convective heat transfer inside and from the
corium pool. LES require a very fine grid to capture the crust
formation and the free convection flow. This aspect (fine mesh
requirement) correlated with the long transient has imposed
the use of a slice from the 3D calandria geometry in order not
to exceed the computing resources. From the safety point of
view it is very important to maintain a heat flux through the wall
below the critical heat flux assuring the integrity of the
calandria vessel, thus the paper results include temperature
profiles and heat fluxes through calandria wall. The results
predicted by the PECM approach are comparable within 10%
with those obtained by the computational fluid dynamics
method, proving that the PECM can be used to perform further
sensitivity studies. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the numerical investigation of coolant flow

in pressure tube nuclear reactor fuel bundle (CANDU6 -
"CANada Deuterium Uranium" reactor) using CFD
(Computational Fluid Dynamics) modeling approach. Fuel
bundles contained in pressure tubes forms a complex flow
domain. The flow is characterized by high turbulence and in
some parts of fuel channel also by multiphase flow. The
turbulence intensity along pressure tube is strongly influenced
by so called appendages. The flow in the fuel bundle has been
simulated by solving the equations for conservation of mass
momentum and energy. For turbulence modeling the standard
k-epsilon and Shear Stress Transport models were tested. To
calculate the subcooled boiling flow, the wall partitioning model
was applied to the wall boundary and various two-phase
parameters were also considered. The reliability of the
numerical results was evaluated by comparing the average flow
parameters with sub-channel analysis.

This paper describes the work of developing two 3D CFD

models using ANSYS CFX for simulating the flow circulation of
the moderator in a CANDU 6 nuclear reactor and predicting
temperature distribution inside the Calandria vessel under
normal operation. This work is important as the estimation of
the local subcooling of the moderator inside Calandria vessel is
an input parameter in assessing the reactor response to an
accident in which the moderator acts as a heat sink. For
assessing the flow in the calandria, two models were
developed and compared. The first one uses the porous media
approach, in which the flow around individual calandria tubes is
not modelled in the analysis, and a pressure loss coefficient is
applied. The second model implies simulating the fuel
channels, in order to consider the effect of the calandria tube
matrix on flow distribution. The results obtained with the first
model are compared and validated against the results obtained
with MODTURC_CLAS using similar input data, the results
being almost similar. This work is the first step in the effort to
improve the thermal hydraulics characteristics in the calandria
vessel and obtain a more uniform temperature distribution in
the core region.

This paper describes the work of developing a 3D CFD model

for analyzing the liquid poison jet velocity and concentration
which is necessary for the performance analysis of SDS2 of
CANDU600. As a boundary condition the liquid poison
injection rate through each injection hole was given and the 3D
CFD model for analyzing the downstream flow and
concentration field is developed and validated. As the ratio of
the calandria tank radius and the injection hole diameter drilled
at the injection nozzle is as big as 1000, the grid generation for
the clandria is very difficult as the number of elements can
easily exceed the computational load limit of the available work
station. Thus to overcome this difficulty sections from calandria
vessel were chosen to investigate the process. Utilizing the
experiment data from Bhabha Atomic Research Center in
India, the jet growth rate was validated and the results were
encouraging. Based on the results, the 3D CFD model
developed in this paper shows physically reasonable results
and will be used for the analysis of SDS2 performance test
along with the reactor physics codes.
