Reader Summary

Reader: Neamiah Russell

Grade: 3O
Tutor: Miranda Chapman
Date: September 21, 2017

Quantitative Summary:

In the first two meetings, the tutor distributed reading assessments to determine Neamiahs text
level at three different stages. The first text given to Neamiah to read was a level 23 book. He
scored a 93% accuracy, and low comprehension score which is a frustration level text. In this
first reading there were 15 errors, 1 self correction which is a self-correction rate of 1:16, and 44
words correct per minute (WCPM), which falls below the 50th percentile.

Neamiahs instructional level text is 20. In this text Neamiah read at a 97% accuracy with
satisfactory comprehension. In this reading there were 4 errors,3 self-corrections,which is a 1:2
self-correction rate and 24 correct words per minute. During this reading Neamiah skipped one
full page of reading, making this an instructional level text.

Qualitative Summary:

Throughout all levels of reading, Neamiah used mainly visual information while trying to decode
words. Many errors came from using the first letter of the word, and saying a word that started
with that letter, for example grandma/garden. Often times he would get the initial sounds
correct, but wouldnt look through the full word. Neamiah also tends to re-read lines whether he
made an error or not. This shows that Neamiah is self-monitoring to some extent and can tell
when a line in the book does not make sense.

The level of fluency for Neamiah is a 2 out of 4 on the Pinnell and Fountas Scale for Assessing
Fluency in his instructional level text.. Neamiah does not put words together in groups and has a
very little rate while reading. When he reaches a hard word he makes a first attempt at reading
it, and follows with is that right?. Neamiah does not stress words or have much intonation in
his reading. In one specific reading he did whisper a few lines, which matched with the meaning
of the text exactly.

When asked to retell the text, Neamiah hit almost all points listed on the recording sheet. The
only story Neamiah performed low with retelling was in the one informational text we read. This
story also happened to be Neamiahs frustrational text level. In the other three stories that we
read, Neamiah was able to retell what happened instantly when asked, and was also able to tell
me more about the story relating it to his personal life.
Reader Summary:

Overall Neamiahs motivation to read was very low. He can become off-task quickly, but often
times relates conversation back to the books being read for assessments. While reading,
Neamiah often self-corrected his mistakes by re-reading lines after noticing something did not
sound right. Although Neamiah, did become frustrated while reading the texts, he tried his best
during the entire reading. Neamiahs had a lot of prior knowledge to text themes and was able to
share those as we were reading. Finally, Neamiahs response to the text or task at hand often
times became lost.

Goal/s for the reader:

The main goal for Neamiah is to teach him to monitor for comprehension while reading. In order
to do this Neamiah needs to be aware of what he does not understand and identify that, and
use appropriate strategies to resolve problems in comprehending stories.
