Lesson Number, Grade Levels, Title, and Duration:

Title: What is Our Community?
Grade Levels: 9th grade (Art 1)
Lesson Number: 4
Duration: 5 (maybe 6) 90-minute class period

II. Lesson Rationale:

In this lesson we will be using the materials we found on our art walk to create a
sculpture that reflects the community in some way. The students can work with the theme
that they used in the wire sculpture, or they can think of a new one. The sculpture can be
abstract or representational. The sculpture must use at least 3 found materials and the rest
can be store bought. This lesson is important because it is going to tie all of the other
lessons up to this point together. This is the students chance to show they have mastered
sculpture skills learned this unit and show their ability to convey a theme through a piece
of art. The students will demonstrate their ability to develop and refine a theme and
execute it in a piece. This is important because conveying a theme in art can be
challenging, but they will have had lots of practice by this point. They will also deepen
their understanding of how they view the community that they live in and this will
hopefully help them develop their self-identities.

III. Key Concepts:

-Found objects can be used to make art
-Art can convey deeper messages and themes

IV. Essential Question:

- How can found objects be used to make art?
- How can we use art to convey deeper messages and themes?

V. Lesson Objectives:
-Stds will design a piece of art that conveys a theme by creating a blueprint
-Stds will compose a well-planed piece of art by following the blueprint they
created
-Stds will create a piece of art that conveys a message about the community by
constructing a sculpture made of the objects they acquired.

VI. Specific Art Content:

-Stds will create a sculpture out of found objects
-Stds will convey a theme through their sculpture

VII. Resources & Materials for Teacher:

-Materials:
-Cardboard
-Acrylic paint and brushes
-Assorted Junk
-Grid Paper
-Glue
-Scissors
-Xacto blade
-Bamboo Skewers
-Fabric
-Pencils
-Clamps
-Wire
-Anything else that seems interesting as a material

about assembling found object sculptures that are particular to the place she finds
them)

VIII. Resources & Materials for Students:

-Materials for today:
-Found objects from art walk or any purchased/acquired materials
-Vocabulary for today:
-Found Objects
-Sculpture In the Round
-Relief Sculpture
-Additive and Subtractive Sculpture

IX. Instruction and Its Sequencing:

Day 1
1. Introduction/Motivation: (10 mins)
-Tell students we are going to start working on our final projects today
-Show Katie Bell Video from section VII
2. Guided Practice (30 mins)
-Quick demo how to make a blue print:
-Talk about scale
-Talk about labeling materials
-Talk about drawing multiple angles
-Demo how to attach certain materials with different methods
-Attaching materials with wire
-Attaching materials with bamboo skewers
-Attaching materials with hot glue (Lightweight materials with non slick
surfaces, dries quickly)
-Attaching materials with super glue (Heavier materials, dries slowly need
a clamp and save for end of class periods)
-Stress importance of craftsmanship
3. Independent Practice (40 mins)
-Students will make several sketches of their ideas in their sketchbook
-After getting approval from the teacher students will make a blueprint for their
sketch on grid paper
-Students should label materials and create a scale
-Students should draw a couple different angles
-Students will probably not finish in time to start working on sculpture
4. Closure (10 mins)
-Tell stds to finish blueprint for homework if not completed
-Remind students to leave materials here to work with
5. Formative Evaluation
-Teacher must approve sketches of materials before they make their blue print on
grid paper
6. Classroom Management Procedures
-Teacher will hand each student one piece of grid paper after they get their
sketches approved
-Teacher will keep track of time during demos so they have enough time to start
blueprints

Day 2
1. Introduction/Motivation: (5 mins)
-Tell students that we will begin working with our materials to construct the
projects today
2. Guided Practice (10 mins)
-Quick reminders on the demo from yesterday
-Tell stds that you will be going around to check that everyone has finished their
blueprint
-Explain that they might want to create an armature for any materials that dont
have structure.
-Remind them of craftsmanship
3. Independent Practice (60 mins)
-Stds will begin constructing their sculptures
-Stds can make sculptures that are in the round, freestanding, relief, hanging or
any other type of sculpture they can think of.
-Sculpture must use at least 3 found materials and the rest can be acquired
elsewhere
-Stds should use hot glue during class and super glue at the end of classes so that
it has time to dry and they arent sitting around waiting for glue to dry.
4. Closure (10 mins)
-Stds need to clean up any and all scraps and trash before they can leave.
-Stds will place sculptures on a rolling cart
-Stds should label their sculpture with a piece of tape and their name written in
sharpie
5. Formative Evaluation
-Teacher will check every student to make sure they have their blueprint
completed and make sure they are on the right track.
6. Classroom Management Procedures
-Set up assorted materials on a table in the front
-Walk around the room to check up on std progress

Day 3
1. Introduction/Motivation: (5 mins)
-Tell stds to keep working on their projects
-If you are working on a project alongside them this would be a good time to
show what youve been doing.
2. Guided Practice (5 mins)
-Quick reminders about previous days or ideas
3. Independent Practice (70 mins)
-Stds will continue working on their sculptures independently
4. Closure (10 mins)
-Stds need to clean up any and all scraps and trash before they can leave.
-Stds will place sculptures on a rolling cart
-Stds should label their sculpture with a piece of tape and their name written in
sharpie
5. Formative Evaluation
-Teacher will walk around the classroom and check to see that students are
making adequate progress.
6. Classroom Management Procedures
-Set up assorted materials on a table in the front
-Walk around the room to check up on std progress

Day 4
1. Introduction/Motivation: (5 mins)
-Tell stds to keep working on their projects
-If you are working on a project alongside them this would be a good time to
show what youve been doing.
2. Guided Practice (5 mins)
-Quick reminders about previous days or ideas
-Introduce artist statements and explain criteria:
-must explain their use of the theme in their piece and how it reflects the
community
-must mention the 3 found materials they used in their piece and how the
materials reflect their theme
-must explain what type of sculpture they made (additive/subtractive,
relief, freestanding, etc.) and methods they used for creating this piece.
3. Independent Practice (70 mins)
-Stds will continue working on their sculptures independently
-Check to see how much progress students have made. If most students are
finishing up they will not have another work day but more work days can be
added after this day if they arent close to done.
-Students will write their artist statement when finished.
