English 102

Learning in progress
English is my second language. When I moved to the sunny Southern California, Los
Angeles, I was just 10 years old. My family moved around countrys a lot, so I was always
forced to learn a new language every time we moved. New language, new people, and new
home. When my parents told my brother and I that we were going to move all the way from
Russia into the United States, we were hoping that this will be our home forever. I was in
6th grade and till this day I remember walking into my classroom and everyone started speaking
English with me, thinking I was American. I made a promise to myself that I will learn this
language faster than any other languages, because I hated when I wasnt able to communicate
with my friends.
As the years passed and I was in middle school, 8th grade, my English language became
better and better. I was very happy with myself and how I was able to write my thoughts on
a piece of paper, talk to my friend, and finally do my homework without having any trouble,
without seeking for anybodys help. There was still one thing bothering me, the school decided

to keep in the program called ESL (English second language), a program for kids who were
new to this language and needed extra help. I was confused as to why I was in this program,
when all of my friends are in regular English classes. My English was very good and I didnt
think I needed to be on the program. All through High School, I was part of this program, until
one day I decided it was time to get out of it. I asked my teacher to take me out of this program.
He told me that I have to take a test in order to get out of it and I did it. When I saw a perfect
score on that test, I immediately remember the promise I made to myself, how I will conquer
When I took my assessment at LAVC, and found out I was placed in one of the highest
English classes, I was beyond proud of myself. I was considered on of the top students in
my English 101 class, and my parents were so happy and proud of my accomplishments,
that they even showered me with gifts, which Im very thankful for. Signing up for English
102 with Professor Batty, made a little nervous, but at the same time very excited because
I love writing essays. Professor Batty is very strict, but the sweetest Professor Ive had so
far here at LA Valley College. She is a tough grader, and even though I might have not gotten
good grades in some of my essays, she has helped me with her honest opinion and her criticism.
I found this class pretty challenging, we had a lots of work to do but I love challenges.
I tried my best and took my time writing all of my essays, and maybe I might have not received
good grades in all of them, I still think I gained a lots of new knowledge. This will be my last
English course that I needed to take during my college days, and after all these years I now
