Reflection 1

In Professor Piersons Fall semester ENC 1101 course outlined in her syllabus are four

course learning goals. Goal number one: Students will be able to read and use scholarly texts to

support their writing goals. I feel that I met this goal because as demonstrated in my essays that

were assigned this semester, I was able to do so through using the readings assigned as

homework in class to use in my essays as sources, quoting from the article. Another way I was

able to demonstrate that I met this goal not only by being able to use the textbook as a source but

also UCF library and google scholars as tools to pull sources from too that will also be used in

my essays. Goal number two in this course is, students will be able to describe and analyze

writing processes in order to flexibly adapt them to support their goals. This goal I feel that I

have met, just as we used our Writing About Writing textbook to read scholarly text to use as

support in our writing. Murray a scholar that can be found in our textbook defines and outline the

writing process, I was later able to use Murrays definition of the writing process to analyze my

own in paper two assigned this semester. The paper as a whole is a description and analysis of

my own personal writing process, from the planning, to writing, and finally the editing/revising,

and in this I was able to combine goal number one as well as number two to complete my second

paper and second goal of this ENC class. Goal 3: Students will learn how to adapt to different

writing contexts they need to address, I feel was not fully mastered but understood and

attempted. In this ENC course we were assigned four major papers each paper was based on a

different unit that was being taught, and were all to be written about different topics in different

ways. Paper one was an autoethnography this was a personal piece on the literacy sponsors of a

certain community of your choosing, the literate activities this community engages in and how

these things affect me personally as a reader and writer. Literacy sponsors are one of the things

taught throughout unit one in which paper one was focused on. Paper two as I mentioned above

was about my writing process, this was a topic outlined in unit two. Paper three was a two-part

paper, a group essay that was later turned into an individual essay. This paper was a rhetorical

analysis paper, the class was broken up into assigned groups in each group the students were to

present an assigned rhetoric of Professor Piersons choosing to the class. We were then to write a

group essay on a piece of text and how the rhetoric our group was assigned is demonstrated

throughout that text. Later for the individual essay we were supposed to pick a rhetoric that our

group did not present and use it to analyze the same text as before. Lastly, paper four was a genre

analysis and application on the things we learned in this course being used to analyze an

assignment given in another class. All four essays are on different topics, units, sources and

style. I believe that me completing and submitting all four essays shows I am able to adapt to

different writing contexts that need to be addressed, meeting goal three. However, each essay

received a different range in grades earning form a D to a B never an A or an F so I dint not

completely fail but I also never earned an A. Goal three as mentioned before was met, but not

mastered because I struggled with writing essay three and four, so although I was able to it was

challenging and my grade I received for them proves that I did not master the goal. Finally, for

goal four, students will consider how social, rhetorical, and technological contexts shape writing

conceptions, processes, rules, and learning. This goal just as the others I feel is met, just as well

as the other goals this one was also met through the writing of essays. Each essay has a different

rubric, where what is expected for the essay is outlined. Whom the essay is being written for, in

what context is the essay being written, what the essay should be about, being able to read and

understand a rubric is the perfect demonstration in mastering goal four. Especially for multiple

essays because each essay varies in what is wanted and expected. I feel that I have met all four

goals for this class in a way where they are not completely understood and there is definitely

room to grow, but enough to say that I have successful finished this course and room for ENC

1102 in the spring to continue and expand my ability to reach these goals even further.
