Lesson Number, Grade Levels, Title, and Duration:

Title: Introduction to Sculpture
Grade Levels: 9th grade (Art 1)
Lesson Number: 2
Duration: Two (maybe three) 90-minute class period

II. Lesson Rationale:

This lesson is going to introduce the students to different types of techniques for
making sculptures. This lesson is important because up till this point many students may
have never worked in 3D mediums before. We will be looking at a video about Liz
Larner, a sculpture artist that I believe will inspire the students in the wire sculpture we
are going to make during this lesson. They will be working with one of the themes about
their community that they brought to class today and exploring it in this preview project
to see if this is a theme they want to continue into the final project. The choice of wire to
introduce them to 3D was made based on the fact that wire is relatively easy to work with
and will get them diving into the 3D world.

III. Key Concepts:

-We can communicate themes through art.
-Wire can be used to make sculptures.

IV. Essential Question:

- How can we communicate themes through art?
- How can we use wire to make a sculpture?

V. Lesson Objectives:
-Students will be able to name and define different types of sculpture by viewing
and taking notes on a PowerPoint.
-Students will be express a theme reflecting the community by making a sculpture
out of wire that explores this theme.

VI. Specific Art Content:

-Students will learn about the different types of sculpture.
-Students will create a wire sculpture

VII. Resources & Materials for Teacher:

-Liz Larner video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jokm69TLk80 (She
creates sculptures that resemble large scale wire sculptures)
-Sculpture overview PPT:

-Materials:
-Wire of a couple different gauges and optional different colored wire
-Needle nose pliers
-Cardboard for bases (pre-cut and glue a couple to show how to make
them)
-Yellow Duct tape
-Wire cutters
-Sandpaper for metal

VIII. Resources & Materials for Students:

-Materials for today: Sketchbook or Journal for notes
-Vocabulary for today:
-theme
-motif
-relief
-in the round
-casting
-mass
-space
-orientation
-proportion
-scale
-additive and subtractive
-gauge

IX. Instruction and Its Sequencing:

Day 1
1. Introduction/Motivation: (10 mins)
-Introduce wire mini-project
-Show video of Liz Larner from part VII.
2. Guided Practice (30 mins)
-Show PPT of sculpture overview and ask stds. to take notes in their
journals/sketchbooks
-Demo of wire-making techniques
-show how to properly bend wire with pliers
-show how to make coils
-show how to make a base
-show how to attach to the base
-show how to make a sculpture that doesnt need a base
-explain not to knar the metal by putting tape over ends of wire
-show how to cut wire
-Show how to sand wire if it gets knar or has a sharp edge
-Show how to join pieces of wire.
-Tell students that they should use one of the themes they were thinking about
from last class and they may come to teacher for advice on how to convey the
theme.
-Teacher passes out pre-cut wire pieces to each table and pliers and cutters
3. Independent Practice (40 mins)
-Students may sketch out designs in sketchbook before they begin
-Stds may make a base out of cardboard, or make a free-standing sculpture
-Stds must tape their pliers, if not already, to prevent knar.
-Stds will work independently on their wire sculpture that conveys their theme.
4. Closure (5-10 mins)
-Stds must clean up their space and wipe down their table dry-wet-dry
-Stds will store sculptures on a rolling cart that will be brought in.
-Stds must write their names in sharpie on the bottom of cardboard base or on a
piece of tape if the sculpture is free standing
5. Formative Evaluation
-Teacher will walk around and make sure that stds are translating their theme
-Teacher will walk around and help stds stay on track and troubleshoot the
material
6. Classroom Management Procedures
-Pre-cut wire
-Walk around classroom to make sure everyone is on task
-Emphasize safety issues involved with using wire- if they misuse they dont get
to use
Day 2
1. Introduction/Motivation: (5 mins)
-Students will get their projects out
-Materials will already be at table
2. Guided Practice (5 mins)
-Remind them of some of the techniques from the demo last class
-Tell them that if they need more wire they should come get it from teacher
3. Independent Practice (70 mins)
-Stds will continue working on their wire sculptures independently.
4. Closure (10 mins)
-Stds must clean up their space and wipe down their table dry-wet-dry
-Stds will store sculptures on a rolling cart that will be brought in.
-If most of the class is done then they should write their artist statement that
explains how their sculpture expresses their theme and how the theme relates to
the community. They should also write about the wire techniques they
implemented. If most of the class isnt finished then another work day will be
added into the schedule.
-Emphasize safety issues involved with using wire- if they misuse they dont get
to use

Optional Day 3 Workday the same as day 2

X. Summative Assessment and Evaluation:
-I want to know if students can make a sculpture that conveys a theme out of wire.
-I will demo techniques for creating a sculpture out of wire and then give them the
materials needed to make a sculpture.
-If their sculpture conveys a theme and makes use of the proper techniques then
they have successfully demonstrated the skills.

XI. Interdisciplinary Connections:

- Connects to English because we are looking at themes and how they are
conveyed.
