EXPERIMENT 3

ADHESIVE WEAR TEST

Objective: To observe Adhesive Wear on Pin & Disk Setup and to calculate the amount of wear
for Different Specimen

Theory: Wear is the progressive loss of material from the operating surfaces as a result of
relative motion. Adhesive wear occurs when two bodies slide over each other. Due sliding of
object, fragmentation are pulled off from and adhere to other surface, than these fragments come
off the surface on which they are formed and material is removed from object in the form of
wear debris. Adhesive wear test can be done in two conditions
1. Dry condition: In this case no lubrication is provided.
2. Wet condition: In this case lubrication is provided.

Apparatus Description:

Figure : 1 Tribometer (Ducom TR02-M61)

Tribometer is designed to conduct adhesive wear tests on samples. Tribometer consists of a

stationary "pin" under an applied load in contact with a rotating disc. The sample under test is
pressed against a EN 31 stainless steel disc of hardness 70 HRC. The instrument is designed to
stop after preset number of cycles. User may calculate loss of weight of the sample after the test.
Specimen description:

Materials Used: Brass and Mild steel

Shape: Cylindrical
Size: Diameter 5mm

Test parameters:

Wear track :-

2016T&M-B01 - 90mm
2016T&M-B02 - 80mm
2016T&M-B03 - 110mm
2016T&M-B03WET - 80mm

Procedure:

1. Clean the sample with acetone.

2. Weigh the test sample.
3. Mount the test sample and set the wear track.
4. Apply the required load.
5. Set the parameters i.e. number of cycles, speed, time etc.
6. After the completion, again clean it with acetone and then weigh the sample.
7. Repeat the procedure for different loads, under same conditions.

Safety Precautions:

To ensure proper and appropriate machine operation, follow the instructions given below:
Only personnel trained for operation are authorized to operate the machine.
The machine has to be switched OFF before opening the electrical cabinet. But input
power supply will be present in the incoming supply terminals. Hence personnel must be
very careful while removing or replacing components.
All personnel must be aware of the location of EMERGENCY STOP BUTTON.
In the event of operating/maintenance personnel entering in the working, they should
understand that the presence of oil, coolant or grease etc. may make surfaces slippery,
leading to sliding or slipping or skidding. Hence to prevent such accidents, the working
area and the machine must be maintained neat and clean.
Never attempt to open any guard or cover while machine is under test.
