Mini-Lesson: How to Sew

Lesson Topic: Sewing Duration of Lesson: 15 minutes

Instructional Objective: Must use a verb that aligns with Blooms Revised Taxonomy and has
at least two parts, learning and behavior.
By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to demonstrate how to sew a hole in the
seam of a shirt.

Anticipatory Set: Describe how you will engage students and connect to their background
knowledge. (1-2 mins)

I will engage my students and connect to their background knowledge by first discussing with
them about how I learned to sew and who taught me. I will then ask my students if they have
ever sewn before. If someone has, I will ask about their experience(s) with sewing and have a
class discussion about what students know and do not know about sewing.

Teaching: Describe how the strategy/concept/skill will be introduced/modeled. (1-3 mins)

I will introduce sewing to my students by demonstrating to them how to sew a hole in the seam
of a shirt. I will first show them what specific materials they need to sew. I will then demonstrate
to them how to put the thread through the hole of the needle and tie a knot. After, I will show my
students where they need to poke the needle through on the seam of the shirt and the width at
which each hole should be on the seam. I will then demonstrate how to pull the thread through
each side of the hole going back and forth and then tying a tight knot at the end. I will have the
shirt that a sewed back together on display so my students are able to refer to it.

Active Involvement: Describe what students will do in a short practice session to demonstrate
understanding. (5-8 mins)

I will give each student two small pieces of fabric, a needle, and thread. In a short practice
session I will have the students sew the two pieces of fabric together, on his or her own. I will
evaluate their work by inspecting how they sewed the two pieces of fabric together and test the
fabrics by stretching them and seeing if they pull apart.

Closure: Describe how you will provide an opportunity for students to share work, ideas,
review, etc. (1-2 mins)

I will give the students an opportunity to share their work by showing other students the fabrics
that they sewed. I will give them the opportunity to explain how they sewed the fabrics together,
what they think is the best or easiest way to sew, what they struggled with the most, and how
they will use this skill in the future.
