Subject Science

Grade Fifth Grade

Level

Learning 5.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning,

Objective logic, and the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations
in which
a) items such as rocks, minerals, and organisms are identified using
various classification keys;
b) estimates are made and accurate measurements of length, mass,
volume, and temperature are made in metric units using proper tools;
c) estimates are made and accurate measurements of elapsed time are
made using proper tools;
d) hypotheses are formed from testable questions;
e) independent and dependent variables are identified;
f) constants in an experimental situation are identified;
g) data are collected, recorded, analyzed, and communicated using proper
graphical representations and metric measurements;
h) predictions are made using patterns from data collected, and simple
graphical data are generated;
i) inferences are made and conclusions are drawn;
j) models are constructed to clarify explanations, demonstrate
Content

relationships, and solve needs; and

k) current applications are used to reinforce science concepts.

Online
Activity This is an asynchronous course. The teacher will record a short video lecture
demonstrating how to measure lengths and heights by using rulers and meter sticks.
The teacher will discuss metric units of measuring length and explain the proper way
to record answers. The teacher will also demonstrate how to find the relationship
between the diameter and circumference of a circular object. In the video, the
teacher will discuss the scientific background of how the age of a tree can be
determined by counting growth rings. The teacher will provide a link for a worksheet
that follows along with the simulation and needs to be completed by each student
and emailed to the teacher in order to receive a grade.

Students will be directed to explorelearning.com where they will be directed to make

an account for free with the help of a parent or guardian. Students should follow the
directions provided and measure the height, diameter and circumference of a tree in
the given forest. In the simulation, the students will determine a trees age by

counting growth rings, and conclude how growth changes as a tree ages. When the
students are finished with the simulation, they should have much greater knowledge
of the metric system, how to properly use rulers and meter sticks to measure lengths
and heights, and a greater understanding on the relationship between the diameter
and circumference of a circular object. The students will complete the Student
Exploration: Measuring Trees on the simulation and email their answers to the
teacher to receive a grade.
