Take me back to the end of
training camp. You didnt
make the roster but you did get
signed to the practice squad.
What was that like, considering
your path missing two years
at Valdosta State due to academ-
ic issues, taking odd jobs such
as Little Caesars to get by, and
being a 26-year-old rookie?
A I felt blessed and thankful
for the situation. To me,
I looked at practice squad as
like a redshirt year at college.
Im just taking this year as get-
ting better mentally. I already
had the physical attributes. Im
just trying to get mentally good
at this level in certain schemes
and how to face different NFL
quarterbacks and receivers.
Im still adjusting but getting

road to getting here, take
me through being promoted to
the active roster about a month

A It was a blessing. Every-
thing Ive been through

Its been a dream since I

20 years.

trying to gain this year?

cally, Im getting stronger in
the weight room and becoming
more aware of where my team-
mates are so I can play faster.
Im gaining a good relationship
with all the coaches and play-
ers here and allowing them to
trust me and me trusting them.
Q Was the speed of the game
a big challenge coming out
of Valdosta?
A At the beginning, yes. The
progression happened so
quickly. The speed gets faster
at every level high school,
college, NFL. Now, everything
is so much more complicated,
so much more detailed, so
much more in depth. You take
your eyes off a guy, hes 15
yards ahead of you down the
field and its a touchdown. Im
ready to play but Im using
this year as a redshirt year so I
can be ready to play full speed
next year.
Q Was there a person or two
in your life that helped you
get here?
A When I was out of school,
yes, sir. My nephew, John
Brown, who plays for the Ari-
zona Cardinals, he played a
major part. He was constantly
in my ear, telling me, Get back
to school. Youre doing the
wrong things. There were fam-
ily members who were disap-
pointed in me because they
knew I was goal-driven with
football but was going through
some issues and some prob-
lems in school. At the end of
the day, that was all on me. I
had to reap what I sowed. I put
myself in that position. I had to
get myself out, and I did that.
So what was the turning
point?
Going back home and
working all those jobs. I
hated it. I knew the only thing
that made me happy was foot-
ball. I just told God, if He ever
gave me an opportunity to play
football again, Id never mess
it up. Thats whats happened.
Q There was a coach at Valdos-
ta who was important, right?

A Always. Hell send me a
text message out of the
blue just to check on me.
Even when he went to Iowa,
hed always check up on me.

What did he see you? It
would have been easy to
turn his back on you, right?
A
He could have. He could
have. I dont know. I dont
know. I would like to know
what he saw in me. At the
end of the day, I truly believe
it was me being the humble
guy that I am. He knew that I
was not a troublemaker but I
wasnt on the right path. I felt
like he knew the direction I
was headed in and he knew
that something needed to
happen for me to realize how
important football was to me
and how good I can be at the
sport. With that being said, I
had got kicked out of school
and Seth Wallace was really
the main one who allowed me
to come back. Im just thank-
ful for Coach Wallace doing
that for me. I made sure that I
made the best of him bringing
me back to VSU.

Theres been another shift
on the Green Bay Packers run-
ning back depth chart.
Ty Montgomery started the
first four games before inju-
ries opened the door for rookie
Aaron Jones. Jones started the
next five games before injuries
opened the door for rookie Ja-
maal Williams.
Jones, who suffered a torn
MCL at Chicago in Week 10,
returned to practice this week.
Williams, however, has done
well enough that he figures to
remain atop the depth chart.
I think Jamaal has proven
himself, coach Mike McCarthy
said. Obviously, we played him
all three downs. I thought he
was excellent in the situation
opportunities he had.
Its been quite a season for
Williams. From the moment he
was drafted, Williams was the
No. 2 back behind Montgom-
ery. After both players were
injured in the Week 4 game
against Chicago, Jones emer-
gence pushed Williams down to
No. 3 on the depth chart. In the
four-game span from Week 5 at
Dallas to Week 9 against De-
troit, Williams played 11 snaps
with nine of those coming in
garbage time at the end of the
loss to the Lions.
The following week at Chi-
cago, Jones injured his knee
and Montgomery re-injured his
broken ribs. Williams stepped
into the lineup for the start of
the second half of that game
and has played 140 snaps and
gotten 68 touches (59 rushes,
nine receptions) the past two-
and-a-half games. Other than
the 54-yard touchdown catch
at Pittsburgh, Williams hasnt
been overly productive with a
3.2-yard average on his 49 car-
ries. Hes fought hard to get
whats there against defenses
designed to stop the run.
After barely playing for the
first half of the season, Williams
is relishing the heavy workload.
I feel like Im a workhorse
and, during the game, I just
get stronger and stronger, re-
ally, Williams said. The game,
its just how I run, every time
its just hard and downhill, and
when I see those openings, I
just take it. I really just try to
be consistent with the way I

While the Packers played
well in Sunday nights loss at
Pittsburgh, the verdict put
them behind the eight-ball in
the NFC playoff race. At 5-6,
they are three games behind
wild-card leaders Carolina (8-
5) and Atlanta (7-4) but with the
head-to-head tiebreaker.
At this point, the Packers
only realistic hope of getting to
the playoffs is to sweep these
next five games.
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
We were in this position
last year and you hate to do it
to yourself again, but we rattled
off six in a row and two in the
playoffs, so I think we have to,
linebacker Clay Matthews said.
I think we have to steal these
next two, I think were very ca-
pable. And then obviously we
have Carolina and some divi-
sion teams. Hopefully, Aaron
(Rodgers) is healthy enough to
come back. But we have to win
this week. It starts with a win.
We were close on Sunday night,
but close doesnt cut it. This is
the week.
The Packers cant get to 10
wins unless they get to six on
Sunday. How does McCarthy
make sure his players are fo-
cusing on winning one game in-
stead of the pursuit of winning
five?
Youve only got so much
time and energy in the day,
McCarthy said. To me, five
plus five equals 10. I dont think
theres anything else to talk
about.
STAYING ALIVE
To get to six, the Packers
need to do something they
havent done in more than two
months.
Win a home game.
Green Bays last victory at
Lambeau Field came on Sept.
28 against Chicago. After beat-
ing Dallas the following week,
Rodgers suffered a broken col-
larbone at Minnesota. In three
home starts, Brett Hundley has
no touchdowns and four inter-
ceptions.
After a big fourth quarter
in the win at Chicago, Hund-
ley had four turnovers and the
Packers were shut out by Balti-
more. After a big game at Pitts-
burgh, the Packers need Hund-
ley to continue the momentum
against the Buccaneers.

me, its just staying consistent.
I would love to be lights-out like

SPEAKING OF RODGERS
Rodgers went on injured re-
serve on Oct. 20 the Friday
after the Minnesota game. By
rule, Rodgers can start practic-
ing six weeks after that date.
Because the Packers dont
practice on Fridays, his first
day back on the practice field
could be Saturday.
Perhaps more likely, the
Packers will wait until after
Sundays game to decide on
Rodgers. If they were to lose to
the Buccaneers, their playoff
hopes would be all but dead and
there would be no reason for
Rodgers to return to action. The
team could then use its second
and final designated-for-return
spot on someone else.

see him out there.
SCHEDULE IS A PAIN
The Packers have been hit
hard by injuries this season. So
have the Buccaneers, and they
can thank Mother Nature.
The Buccaneers were sup-
posed to play at Miami in
Week 1. That game, however,
was postponed by Hurricane
Irma. Conveniently for the
NFL, both teams had Week 11
byes, so Bucs-Dolphins was
pushed back to Nov. 19. Incon-
veniently for the Buccaneers
and Dolphins, that means their
bye would come in Week 1 and
theyd have to play 16 consecu-
tive weekends.
That attrition showed up
on Tampa Bays injury report.
Coach Dirk Koetter listed 11
players on his report, six of
which didnt practice includ-
ing starting cornerback Vernon
