Objective 1: Develop an awareness of assessment as a construct, with its own terminology,

structures, applications, and interpretations

As a child care professional, being aware of assessment is critical to my future career as a teacher.

Having the ability to conduct assessments accurately, and effectively will enhance the overall experience

in the child care setting. It is important to know not only how to conduct assessments, but when and the

purpose of them. It is paramount, to understand the terminology of assessment, as you will use it to guide

the way it is conducted and communicated to parents and faculty. Some terminology used in assessment

are evaluate, measure, screening, informal assessment, formal assessment, standardized, standard scores,

percentile scores, and among many other terms. Looking back on what I have learned about assessment

can really be beneficial, and help guide me as I use this informational as an early childcare professional.

I have learned not only different terminology terms for assessments, I have learned different tools and

methods that align with the terms. I learned about the roles of observation, task analysis, naturalistic,

dynamic, and authentic assessment as informal types of assessments. In means of interpreting

assessments, I have learned things that makes an assessment high quality. For example, the key

components that should be included in assessment conducting, such as reliability, validity, specificity and

sensitivity. These are the qualities that one should look for when conducting an assessment. I have used

this information to interpret standardized scores like, T-scores, percentile scores etc. I have also learned

how to communicate the results of assessments with families, and why conferences are very important

factor in the assessment process. As a professional, it is important to make sure the structure of the

assessment is of quality, effective and accurate. The professional must properly use the appropriate

assessment tools to get valid data as they will communicate the results to parents and faculty.

The evidence to prove that I have met this learning objective are attached. Lab 5: Scoring and interpreting

T scores and Percentiles, shows my level of understanding for this application assessment, assessment

terminology, and being able to interpret childrens results. I was able to use charts to interpret the childs

scores to effectively assess them. I used the Child Behavior Caregiver-Teacher Report Form (CTRF)
assessment tool to score specific problems reported for a child. The grade I received on Lab 5 was a 90%,

which shows that I have learned the information needed to meet the criteria for this learning objective.

The next evidence that I have attached is Lab 3: Scoring and interpreting percentile scores. This is where

I demonstrated my knowledge for assessment terminology, application, structures and interpretation. I

received an 85% grade on this lab. So, from lab 3 to lab 5, I have developed a better understanding of this

learning objective. I was able to apply this knowledge to show my awareness of assessment as a

construct, with its own terminology, structures, applications, and interpretations.
