George Orwell, popular novelist, was born in India in 1903. One of the most rememberable
novel he had written was Animal farm, 1945. The story refers to animals in a small farm, as known
as, Manor Farm. The writer pointed out animal abuse activities by the humans, although, the
animals always wanted to reunite themselves. Old major, the old pig who receive praises and
respects from every animals was the one who suggest the concept of animalism. The idea of
animalism inspired Napoleon and Snowball, both two pigs to be the leader of Animal farm. After
rebellion, Snowball created seven commandments and plan to develop animal farm. While
Napoleon wanted to rise his power up and betrayed Snowball, Napoleon became new leader of
Animal farm. He didnt follow seven commandments directly and change the rule to be benefit for
him. He also stole Snowball idea for creating windmill. He exploit other animals in the farm. Lastly,
Napoleon changed the name back to be Manor farm. Moreover, his behaviours are similar to
human. According to Animal farm, his purpose to wrote this novel is to represent Russian revolution
in 1917. Setting of the Animal farm portray of Russia and three main leader character which is Old
major, Snowball and Napoleon demonstrated power of Russian revolution. During control of
Napoleon, it is obvious that woman character in the novel often be under power of male leader.
Animal farm, Orwell represent gender inequality through three different characters of female which
According to seven commandments, trading with human is not allowed in Animal Farm.
However, Napoleon refused to follow the rule. He sell those eggs to Mr.Whymper for his own sake.
One Sunday morning Squealer announced that the hens, who had just come in to lay again, must
surrender their eggs. Napoleon had accepted, through Whymper, a contract for four hundred eggs a
week. The price of these would pay for enough grain and meal to keep the farm going till summer

came on and conditions were easier. (pages76). The nine hen finally know about Napoleons
behaviours. Even behaviours of Napoleon are oppose to seven commandments of the farm and
those hens disagree with Napoleon. They cannot do anything to stop him. The hen were
marginalised to stop him. As a result, female seems to be minority at this farm. It is similar to
situation of Soviet Union that leader try to hold their power by killing people who protest them
without any equality and fairness. In any case, Napoleons execution assembly represents the
Moscow Trials and the Great Purge, Stalins widespread campaign to suppress any and all dissent in
the Soviet Union. Indeed, this was a far cry from the cooperation and good cheer with which the
Animalism revolution began. In the Soviet Union, it began as a cleansing of the Communist Party
and was expanded to one of the entire, vast Soviet population, among which tens of millions were
killed or deported. (CT Research & Education, 2012). Orwell demonstrated how masculine voice
After rebellion in Manor farm, Mollie still concerns about her appearance and her beloved
food, sugar. It could be interpreted that she might not be interested in rebellion. After every animals
in the farm know that Mollie still concerns about wearing ribbon and sugar. She also let human
stroke her nose. No one mentioned about Mollie and scold her a lot. Mollie have negative
stereotype about selfish. The reason is most of the animal recognise Mollie as traitor. A fat red-
faced man in check breeches and gaiters, who looked like a publican, was stroking her nose and
feeding her with sugar (pages46) According to The Use of Personification in George Orwell's
Novel Animal Farm of Kasdi Merbah University A vain horse who loves sugar and wearing
pretty ribbons in her mane, Mollie never much cares about the revolution. Mollie symbolizes the
selfish and materialistic middle-class. (Noureddine, Fouzia and Farida, 2015). Mollie represents as
stereotype to other animal in the farm. Moreover, her gender is female. Basically, female character
in Animal farm are less equality than male. It is obvious that other animals in Animal farm didnt
Lastly, Clover is the one of equines characters in the Animal farm. Compared to Soviet
Union, she is a symbol of working-class and peasant. She really support the revolution and follows
seven commandments directly. She was describe as Clover was a stout motherly mare approaching
middle life, who had never quite got her figure back after her fourth foal (pages4). According to
feminist theory, most of the people judge appearance more than ability of woman. In addition,
Clover have similarity to Boxer. She works hard in the farm and believed in attitude of leader.
Even Clover support rebellion and working hard for Animal farm. She follow every command of
the pigs directly; however, not everyone know that she really work hard. She tries her best to be
good member of the farm Clover represent Boxer's female counterpart. In the next passage, clover
is trying to learn the alphabet A, B, C, D. (Assia, Halima and Mohammed, 2013). It is an good
example to describe, hence, female have ability to do work almost similar to men, gender always
limited chance and ability. Animal farm is a patriarchy led by male and leader with misogyny could
To sum up, it is important to note that three different female character during rebellion of
Animal farm are inequality with male. The effectiveness of her attitude was not as commendable as
the mens. Those nine hens represent how marginalised of female to protest the leader. Mollie
represents how other animal in the farm set an stereotype to her attitude and behaviours. Lastly,
Clover represents attitude of male leaders with misogyny to female and ruled the system in the farm
through patriarchy. Those example are approach to Feminist theory inequality of gender in society
of Animal farm.
