It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Andrew Slaughter. I have worked
with Andrew, as his high school counselor, for four years. Andrew has completed academically
challenging courses including AP Spanish while maintaining a 3.17 cumulative GPA.

Andrew has been recognized for his achievement on the National Spanish Exam where he scored
in the 88th percentile in bilingual category. Andrew also participates annually in our local newspaper
competition, Campus Star. Last year, he won Grand Prize for his article on transgender students.
Andrew is very involved in clubs and projects in our school district. Over the past two years, he has
been involved in our district suicide prevention team, planning and implementing a suicide prevention
program for the entire school district. He is a member of our school fashion club and a gifted artist.

Outside of school, Andrew is an advocate through community organizations. He is working on

Project Lost Star Creation and Construction team, which promotes mental health awareness. Andrew is
a member of Oakland Youth PRIDE, Gender Spectrum Youth Counsel, and Vallejo Kaiser Teen Group.
In each of these organizations he takes an active role to advocate for himself and others in the
community.

Andrew has an amazing life story. He has overcome many challenges, most people will never
face. Through his journey he has learned to work through his own mental health challenges as well as
mentor others. Andrew uses his artistic skills to address cultural misconceptions and relay messages
about his journey. At this time he is working on a graphic novel showcasing the relation between crime,
sexuality and race in California.

Andrew is a creative, hard-working and perseveres through challenges. Andrew has been
amazing to work with over the past four years. I know his advocacy for others and passion to make
change will continue to motivate and support others in many different communities.
