Week of December 4 December 8

4th Grade News


This week in 4th Grade:
Please be sure your child has a composition book for reading! We'll begin using them this week
(December 4-8).
Christmas program grades 4-8: Friday December 15th 9:45am-10:45am
Christmas Parade: Friday December 15th 1:20pm We will be wearing Santa hats for the parade.
Please bring in a Santa hat before the parade.
With winter weather fast approaching, please be sure that we have your most up to date
contact information in case of early dismissal or school cancellations.
With colder weather here please be sure your student is dressed appropriately for
outside recess! Also, we could use a few more boxes of tissues.
Math: We are continuing division of 4 digits by 1 digit numbers. We will work on GoMath lesson
4.10 and 4.11. We will take a test next week to assess these skills.
Reading: This week in reading we will be finishing Our World Turned to Water. We will be working on main
idea, text features, and inferencing. We will then continue to practice these skills with The Amazing History
of Dogs. In language arts we will continue to work on using quotation marks and commas for direct speech.
Don't forget to read every night for 20 minutes!
Spelling Words: The spelling test will be on Friday, December 15.
Hint: To determine the meaning of unknown words, break the word into parts. Break the base words and
suffixes down, then apply the suffixes to the meaning of the base word.

Vocabulary: These words are part of our story and they are necessary for understanding the plot. We
read them in context almost daily and we review their meaning frequently. Students will be quizzed on these
words when we finish working with the story, which is planned for Friday, December 15.
aggressive (adj.) - ready and willing to fight
ancestors (n.) - people who were in someone's family; animals in the past form which modern animals
developed
domesticated (adj.)- bred or trained to need and accept the care of human beings
morphed (v.) - changed completely from one thing into another
speculate (v.) - to form ideas or theories about something

Science: We are phases of matter this week.
