PART ONE (8pts)

The market place, which was situated at the eastern entrance of the town, got animated once a week. This
generally used to happen on Wednesdays. The inhabitants of the neighbouring villages rarely missed an
opportunity to come to the place. They used to arrive there in the early hours of the day and there was a
continuous flow of people of different ages entering and leaving the spot until late in the afternoon. Those who
lived far used to bring with them either horses or donkeys to carry the various items they bought because they
usually purchase the amount of food and other things that they used to need at home for the whole week. The
market place offered a large variety of goods to the customers.
There used to be fruit, vegetables, cereals, clothes, tools, carpets and countless articles for domestic use. A
special ground was allocated for the sale of animals such as cows, sheep, goats and donkeys. Among the public
you could see who used to be present there weekly, just to stroll through the thick crowd because they used to
enjoy the lively atmosphere around the area. There used to be a lot of excitement where the calls and the shouts
of the sellers got mixed with the loud voices of the buyers trying to bargain over the prices.

PART ONE (8pts)
On June 26, 1945, representatives of 50 states signed the United Nations Charter in San Francisco. Since
then, it is considered as the planet's most important organisation when wars and conflicts in many parts of the
world have demonstrated that our planet has not become a more peaceful place.
Everything must be done to ensure that the United Nations can address the challenges of our time; the
obligations of the Security Council, peace missions, and also finding solutions to global problems such as
poverty, the population explosion, the destruction of the environment and the Human Rights situations in the
world
Despite the problems the United Nations Organisation is facing, it makes a decisive contribution to
improving the lives of people all over the world. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), for
example, supports over 5000 agricultural, industrial, educational and environmental projects. Due to the efforts of
the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organisation
(WHO), 80% of the children in developing countries were vaccinated against diseases such as tuberculosis,
diphtheria and tetanus. As a result of the Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), over 60%
of adults in poor countries are able to read and write and 80% of the children in these countries now go to
school. To put an end to hunger in the world, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has
contributed initiatives such as the world food programme to raise people's nutritional and living standards.
Through the achievements and success of the different agencies around the world, a lot more is still to be

I'm filled with childhood memories. When I was five years old. my grandmother, who was the best grandmother in the
world, lived with my family. At the time, my lather had a Business, and my mother used to help him. That's why 1 had to
spend ail day long with my grandmother. She was very kind and loyal to me. and she would teach me good manners.
Unfortunately, in our society, what we call good manners, or good etiquette, are changing. New-generations are

In my language, we have two different ways of addressing people. One is the intimate second form that is generally used
with family members, friends and people of the same age; one is more formal, in which the third person is used to address
people. I would use the formal way when 1 addressed elderly people or people 1 didn't know, but young generations are
now using the intimate second form everywhere and with everybody

The city and seaport of Alexandria in Egypt was one of th most famous resorts of th Mediterranean.lt was
situated west of th river Nile.
The city got its name from Alexander th Grt who in 332 B.C. wanted to hve a good seaport to link Egypt
with Greece. Alexandria quickly became one of th grt cities of th ancient world. In addition to an old
university, there were two famous libraries. Most of th historical places such as th Greeco-Roman musum
were open to visitors except on Fridays. This musum was situated nearby th east port. Another famous sight of
Alexandria was th Fort of Qayat Bay. This was built in th 15th century where th ancient pharaos lighthouse
used to stand. A light used to burn on top at th night to guide ships coming to th port. Next to that Fort, there
was th Aquarium. Not tar from th Fort in th west port, there was Ras-El-Tin place. This was begun in 1834 by
th Famous Egyptian ruler Mohamed Ali. He also built th Mahmoudiya Canal. This brought water to th
southern part of th city. As Alexandria was located near th sea, most of th men were tlshermen, some of them
were craftsmen and th others worked in th gardens. The wpmen worked in th cotton lands but most of them

In many countries, it is hard to get a job of any kind. Some people work in a factory because it is the only
place where there is work.Others have to do what their families tell them to do.How do people choose? And
what are they looking for in their work?
For some of them the most important thing is money. They do not mind if the job is unpleasant, risky or
illegal. If the money is good, they will do it. In addition, some of the best jobs have other attractions. For
example, an airline pilot has not only a good salary but also prestige and an opportunity to travel. But many
people would refuse the job because of the responsibility of the lives of the passengers.
Pop stars and film stars are well paid too, although, perhaps, what attracts them is fame and celebrity.
However, they have to work long hours and have no security.
Security is something that attracts many people into jobs like banking, secretarial work or civil service. Of
course, there are many people who look for travel or adventure and others who love power and enjoy giving
orders. But the happiest people are those who choose a job of service to society. Many teachers, nurses and
other workers have chosen their jobs to serve society. They get the satisfaction of serving other people in
different ways such as education, religion and sport.

Living in a city is becoming more and more difficult. Every minute our lives are in danger. When
we leave our houses, we must breathe bad air. This smog is not only unpleasant but dangerous as well.
Our old people are suffering from respiratory diseases. The pollution in the air hurts our eyes, our and
our throat.
When we walk down the streets, we hear loud noises from every side: radios, stereos, shouting
people, cars, etc...We have few parks. We have no place to sit quietly and enjoy the singing of birds. We

water when we drink it? And what about the food we eat?

Third Term Exam (May 2010)
More than 1450 people have been killed by Wednesday's quake that struck at 7:44 p.m. in northern Algeria,
while more than 7000 have been injured. Hundreds - perhaps thousands of people - may still be trapped under
collapsed buildings. The hardest-hit cities were the capital, Algiers, and the towns of Rouiba City and
Boumerdes, both of which lie east of Algiers.
During this massive earthquake, which is the strongest to have hit the North African country in 23 years,
most Algerians were in their homes. People in Algiers and in all the towns and villages in the earthquake zone felt
the quake in waves, with vibrations that lasted 40 to 50 seconds, getting stronger, weaker, then stronger again.
Everyone was panicking.
The Algerian Red Crescent Society responded with help, and the International Federation of the Red Cross
and Red Crescent Societies said it would send a team to help evaluate the damage and the needs of the
population. Trucks were called into service as ambulances to transport the injured and the bodies of the dead from
devastated Algiers neighbourhoods and surrounding towns and villages. Doctors treated patients in the streets
because hospitals did not have enough beds to accommodate all of the injured. Hospital officials asked for blood
donations, doctors and paramedics.
Assistance has come from Britain, France, Japan, Spain, Italy and Switzerland, Algeria's foreign minister
said. They have sent search and rescue teams, in some cases including sniffer dogs.

First Term Final Exam (Nov 06)
The Amazon forest in Brazil covers five million square kilometres an area as big as Europe. It contains 1A of
the world's trees.
However the trees are disappearing. By the year 1974, !4 of the forest had already been cut down. In the
following year 1975,4% of the trees went. If the destruction of the forest continuous, there will be no forest by
the year 2020.
Scientists say that the disappearance of the trees is causing changes in the climate. In many countries there is
less snow and rain and in others there is too much water.
What will happen if the Amazon forest is cut down? Two things may happen: there will be serious effects on the
world's climate and the air that we breathe will contain less oxygen.
Why is this? Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and give out oxygen. The trees of the Amazon are very
active as they provide 50% of the world's annual oxygen.
If we lose the tropical forests, the air will contain less oxygen and more carbon dioxide, the temperature will
rise and with less oxygen in the air, it will become difficult to breathe.
Scientists agree that if we destroy the Amazon forest, life on earth will become difficult and it may become
impossible.

Without water, life could not exist. Because water is essential to all life, we must manage it intelligently
and carefully, We think there's plenty of it- in oceans, lakes, rivers and streams, It may even seem as
though we have more water than we need.
Water is essential to people in more ways than you might think. We need water for cooking, bathing ,
transportation and recreation. We eat aquatic plants, and animals. We use water to irrigate our* crops,
and to manufacture products.
Most of the water on earth -97 %- is salt water stored in oceans. Only about 3% of the earth's water is
fresh water- and most of that is locked up in ice caps and glaciers.
There will never be any more water on earth than there is now. The same water is simply recycled over
and over again, Just think - the water we are using now is the very same water that the dinosaurs used
for millions of years ago.

PART ONE (8pts)
One Saturday afternoon in February 1943, a farmer in Mexico stopped working for a moment and looked
across his field of corn. Suddenly, he saw a thin line of white smoke curling up out of his field. Strange things had
been happening on the farm that day. Early in the morning, the earth had shaken under the farmer's feet. Later, he
had noticed that the earth seemed hot as he walked across it. And now he saw this smoke. As he went to see what it
was, he heard a strange noise. The line of smoke grew bigger and went high into the sky.
The farmer rushed home to his wife. He and his wife never saw their cornfield again. While he was telling
his wife to hurry from the house, the earth shook violently. They saw that great flames were rising from the field. A
volcano was being born. They ran to the village, but found it in ruins. The road was full of frightened people,
hurrying to safety. The volcano lighted up the sky for miles around and flames rushed out of the ground. Great
explosions shook the earth.
On the third evening, a stream of liquid rock began to boil up from the centre of the volcano. Government
officials, scientists, journalists and photographers rushed into the valley. They went as close to the fire as possible,
and stayed there for several days, studying the new volcano. Within a few months, the volcano had buried two
valleys under rocks and ashes. Black ashes had covered everything, gardens and fruit trees had disappeared. Not
even grass could live. Birds fell from the sky, dying before they reached the ground.

SECTION ONE: READING COMPREHENSION Read the following text then do the activities.
Beginning of a dream
The march from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial had been scheduled to start at 11.30 am But
at least 20 minutes before, a group of Negroes started strolling (walking) away from the monument's grounds to
the Memorial. Hundreds then thousands and ten of thousands followed. Some marchers wept as they walked; the
faces of many more gleamed with happiness There was little shouting or singing But at the memorial, there was a
professional entertainment Folk singers Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Peter-Paul and Mary rendered hymns and civil
rights songs. First, she sang a slow sorrowful song entitled "I've been bucked (rejected) and I've been scorned"
Her voice was marvelous but her impact was more in her manner. Near tears, she moved her large audience to
tears. Then, Martin Luther King began to speak: "The Negro he said, lives on a lonely island of poverty in the
middle of a vast ocean of material prosperity and finds himself an exile in his own land. It would be fatal for the
nation to underestimate the determination of the Negro The Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there
are freedom and equality " His audience roared: "Yes, yes" to almost every thing he said. But then King came to
the end of his prepared text and continued with a dramatic voice: "I have a dream "King cried. The crowd began
cheering but King never pausing brought silence as he continued :" I have a dream that one day the red hills of
Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former ownslavers will be able to sit down together at the table
of brotherhood ". "I have a dream "King went on, shouting down the crowd's applause "that my four little
children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but the content of
their character" Obeying their leaders' injunctions to leave town as soon as the official ceremonies had ended, the
demonstrators made their WHY back towards their trains, buses, planes and cars. It was a quiet night in
Washington after a day that would never be forgotten.

Third World countries are countries that constitute % of the world population. Most of them got their
independence after the First World War.
Many countries in Africa are today facing critical problems such as lack of food, high rate -birth,
illiteracy, growing debts and many social, economic and educational difficulties. These countries are facing a
terrible lack of food which is mainly due to the lack of rain, flood and poor farming methods. Therefore they
import more than half of their food. Statistics show that children are dying from starvation and diseases, The
problem is that there is no balance between the economic growth which is very slow and the population
growth which is fast. In a world where a man is capable of reaching the moon, hunger is a scandal which
causes a great deal of deaths among the poor of the Third World.
To conclude governments should take strict measures to overcome problems of famine and health.
Developed countries ought to help the poor ones so as to balance the world-

During the past decade there has been a considerable increase in the number of natural disasters which have
caused hardship and suffering in many countries. Disasters are not confined to particular regions, nor do they
discriminate between developing and developed countries. For the past year alone, widespread floods in France,
Hungary, Italy, Switzerland, Algeria and Vietnam as well as devastating earthquakes in El Salvador and India
have reminded us of the need to take global preventive measures against disasters.
During the 1990s, there was a 10% annual increase in economic loss due to disaster
Global warming is expected to increase the incidence of disasters such as storms, droughts and floods. The
increasing of CO2 emissions, deforestation, desertification and erosion of agricultural land through poor
irrigation practices are all human factors which play an important role in the increase of natural disasters.
Although we continue to refer to these disasters as natural, they are to a large extent , man-made.

Jules Verne was a Frenchman who was born in 1828. He was neither an inventor nor a scientist, but he read
great many scientific books. He had a very strong imagination and he loved adventure although he did not have
many great adventures himself. He wrote a number of exciting books about the things which he thought that
scientists and inventors would one day be able to do. At that time, his stories seemed like fairy stories!
Many of Jules Vernes attempts to look into the future, however, were surprisingly accurate. For instance, one
book was called From Earth to the Moon. In this three men and a dog made a journey around the Moon. They did
this in a hollow ship fired from a gun. After going round the Moon, they returned to Earth and splashed down
into the sea not far from where they first real Moon travellers landed in July 1969, about a hundred years later!
Jules Vernes most famous book is Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. This book has been made into
a film. Perhaps you have seen it. In all his books Jules Verne used his scientific knowledge as well as his imagin-
ation in describing future inventions such as: the submarine or the space ship Sometimes he was wrong, of
course, but often the accuracy of his descriptions is very surprising.
Jules Verne died in 1905 when he was seventy-seven. Many years later, explorers really did go to the Moon
and one part of the Moon was given Jules Vernes name.

Third Term Final Examination. (May 2010)

In the north of Scotland there is a lake

called Loch Ness. It is the biggest lake in
Britain. It is cold, deep and dark and not many
people went there until a road was made
around the lake in 1930. Holiday-makers began
to use the road, and this was when the stories
began.
Someone said that he had seen a
monster in the lake. He said it was twelve
metres long. It had a long neck and a small
head. Then someone else said he had seen it.
Others said the same thing and in 1933, a
London doctor took a photograph. It looked
like a monster but it was not clear. The
newspaper printed the picture and called it the
Loch Ness monster or Nessie.
Then the argument began. Nobody had seen anything clearly and no one had any proof. Some people were
certain there was something living in the lake. Others said there was nothing there. In 1961, a lot of people joined
together to make a real effort to see and photograph the monster-if there was one! Several times people thought
they saw something but after ten years there was still no real proof.
Later, underwater television cameras were used and even a submarine! But no one found any real proof.
However, the submarine did find something interesting: a huge underwater cave. It was big enough to be the
home of a monster, but of course, this was no proof.
In 1975, however, some Americans scientists formed a search team. They used an underwater camera. It
took pictures every seventy seconds. Some of the pictures seemed to show a red-brown creature. Its body was
about four metres long and had a very ugly head on the end of a four metres neck. Many people then began to
believe in the monster but even today we cannot be certain.

THIRD TERM FINAL EXAM (May 2009)

Read the passage carefully then answer the following questions.

As the Japan Airlines DC-8 hovered 200 feet above Tokyo Bay, all seemed normal. Pilot Seiji Katagiri had
received the go-ahead to begin his descent into Hanada Airport. Suddenly the nose dipped and the plane splashed
into the shallow waters, killing 22 people and seriously injuring 78 of the 174 aboard.
The crash last Tuesday puzzled the investigators until they found evidence that the pilot may have been flying
under poor health conditions. JAL's president, Yasuomoto Takaji announced at an extraordinary news conference
on Friday that the pilot had recently suffered from a psychosomatic disorder. He had been suspended from his
duties for three weeks in Autumn of 1980 because of a stomach disorder, but had resumed duty in December of
the same year.
JALs president also said that in the pilot's cabin one lever had been found in reverse. Why that happened is
only one of the disturbing questions still under investigation.

Floods have been and continue to be a great destructive natural danger facing our country. A
flood is an abnormally high stream flow mat overtops the natural or artificial banks of a stream.
Flooding is a natural characteristic of rivers. Flood plains are normally dry-land areas which act
as a natural reservoir and temporary channel far flood waters. If more quantity is generated than
the banks of a stream channel can accommodate, the water will overtop the stream banks and
spread over the flood plain causing social and economic disruption and damage to crops and
structures.
Floods can also form where there is no stream, as for example, when abnormally heavy

Part one /15 points : Read the text and do the activities.
There was a time when the owners of shops and businesses in Chicago had to pay large sums of money to
gangsters in return for " protection ". If the money was not paid promptly, the gangsters would quickly put a man
out of business by destroying his.shop. Obtaining " protection money " is not a modern crime. As long as the
fourteenth century, an Englishman, Sir John Hawkwood.,,, made the remarkable discovery that people would
rather pay large sums of money than have their life work destroyed by gangsters.
Six hundred years ago, Sir John Hawkwood arrived in Italy with a band of soldiers and settled near
Florence. He soon made a name for himself and came to be known to the Italians as Giovanni Acuto. Whenever
the Italians city-states were at war with each other, Hawkwood used to hire his soldiers to princes who were
willing to pay price he demanded.
In times of peace, when business was bad, Hawkwood and his men would march into a city-state and, after
burning down a few farms , would offer to go away if protection money was paid to them. Hawkwood made large
sums of money in this way. In spite of this, the Italians regarded him as a sort of hero. When he died at the age of
eighty, the Florentines gave him a state funeral and had a picture painted which was dedicated to the memory of"
the most valiant soldier and most notable leader, Signor Giovanni Haukodue".

2nd Term English Exam
I am a film addict and a book addict too, but they have different effects. I think that one of the differences
between the two is that a film does not stay with you as book does. A book is a real meal . You live with it
and it nourishes you. The film satisfies the eye. If it is a good one it gives you a few wonderful moments and
then disappears. Certainly you may recall certain things but it doesn't stay with you for days on end whereas
a book you can't shake off. You live it over and over again for days and weeks, It leaves a permanent
impression upon you if it is a good book. Films do not do that to me .
What I notice about films is that certain characters become embedded in the back of your head. You can
bring them lo life over and over again. With a book you never know how a character looked. You have to
imagine him.
A motion picture image is a very strong one. It is not the story that holds me. There is colour and
movement action. There are also characters I recognize, you are observing living people and they become
more real than characters in a book. The characters in a book, I never really visualize. They leave an image,
which is vague, not clear, You often get something in a book which films cannot give you : words and ideas
are more powerful. The film is too real, too concrete.
