PART ONE (8pts)
On June 26, 1945, representatives of 50 states signed the United Nations Charter in San Francisco. Since
then, it is considered as the planet's most important organisation when wars and conflicts in many parts of the
world have demonstrated that our planet has not become a more peaceful place.
Everything must be done to ensure that the United Nations can address the challenges of our time; the
obligations of the Security Council, peace missions, and also finding solutions to global problems such as
poverty, the population explosion, the destruction of the environment and the Human Rights situations in the
world
Despite the problems the United Nations Organisation is facing, it makes a decisive contribution to
improving the lives of people all over the world. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), for
example, supports over 5000 agricultural, industrial, educational and environmental projects. Due to the efforts of
the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organisation
(WHO), 80% of the children in developing countries were vaccinated against diseases such as tuberculosis,
diphtheria and tetanus. As a result of the Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), over 60%
of adults in poor countries are able to read and write and 80% of the children in these countries now go to
school. To put an end to hunger in the world, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has
contributed initiatives such as the world food programme to raise people's nutritional and living standards.
Through the achievements and success of the different agencies around the world, a lot more is still to be
done for the preservation of world peace and the improvement of people's life.

FIRST TERM ENGLISH EXAM NOVEMBER ,2007
Over the last few years more and more people have been buying citimobile electric cars. Why ?There are
number of reasons.First the price of petrol.Did you know that fuel coasts for a small conventional car are as high
as they are for an electric car? Then there are the servicing coasts .Citimobile electric cars do not need to be
serviced as often as conventional cars. They are easy to look after and hardly ever give trouble. And of course
there 's afouestion of noise .Electric cars rush much more quietly than other cars. And they don't cause any
pollution.
The citimobile has another advantage, too .It's simply ideal for city-driving and shopping .Although it's only falf
as long as a conventional small ear-that means no parking problems-therms room inside for two grown-ups and
plenty of room of them~still for shopping baskets and bags.
The citimobile is great as a second car .You simply pug it into an ordinary electric socket-it's cheaper at night-and
you are ready for 50 happy miles of citimobile driving.A great little car! See your agent for it today!!!!

The city and seaport of Alexandria in Egypt was one of th most famous resorts of th Mediterranean.lt was
situated west of th river Nile.
The city got its name from Alexander th Grt who in 332 B.C. wanted to hve a good seaport to link Egypt
with Greece. Alexandria quickly became one of th grt cities of th ancient world. In addition to an old
university, there were two famous libraries. Most of th historical places such as th Greeco-Roman musum
were open to visitors except on Fridays. This musum was situated nearby th east port. Another famous sight of
Alexandria was th Fort of Qayat Bay. This was built in th 15th century where th ancient pharaos lighthouse
used to stand. A light used to burn on top at th night to guide ships coming to th port. Next to that Fort, there
was th Aquarium. Not tar from th Fort in th west port, there was Ras-El-Tin place. This was begun in 1834 by
th Famous Egyptian ruler Mohamed Ali. He also built th Mahmoudiya Canal. This brought water to th
southern part of th city. As Alexandria was located near th sea, most of th men were tlshermen, some of them
were craftsmen and th others worked in th gardens. The wpmen worked in th cotton lands but most of them
stayed at home.

In many countries, it is hard to get a job of any kind. Some people work in a factory because it is the only
place where there is work.Others have to do what their families tell them to do.How do people choose? And
what are they looking for in their work?
For some of them the most important thing is money. They do not mind if the job is unpleasant, risky or
illegal. If the money is good, they will do it. In addition, some of the best jobs have other attractions. For
example, an airline pilot has not only a good salary but also prestige and an opportunity to travel. But many
people would refuse the job because of the responsibility of the lives of the passengers.
Pop stars and film stars are well paid too, although, perhaps, what attracts them is fame and celebrity.
However, they have to work long hours and have no security.
Security is something that attracts many people into jobs like banking, secretarial work or civil service. Of
course, there are many people who look for travel or adventure and others who love power and enjoy giving
orders. But the happiest people are those who choose a job of service to society. Many teachers, nurses and
other workers have chosen their jobs to serve society. They get the satisfaction of serving other people in
different ways such as education, religion and sport.

Third Term Exam (May 2010)
More than 1450 people have been killed by Wednesday's quake that struck at 7:44 p.m. in northern Algeria,
while more than 7000 have been injured. Hundreds - perhaps thousands of people - may still be trapped under
collapsed buildings. The hardest-hit cities were the capital, Algiers, and the towns of Rouiba City and
Boumerdes, both of which lie east of Algiers.
During this massive earthquake, which is the strongest to have hit the North African country in 23 years,
most Algerians were in their homes. People in Algiers and in all the towns and villages in the earthquake zone felt
the quake in waves, with vibrations that lasted 40 to 50 seconds, getting stronger, weaker, then stronger again.
Everyone was panicking.
The Algerian Red Crescent Society responded with help, and the International Federation of the Red Cross
and Red Crescent Societies said it would send a team to help evaluate the damage and the needs of the
population. Trucks were called into service as ambulances to transport the injured and the bodies of the dead from
devastated Algiers neighbourhoods and surrounding towns and villages. Doctors treated patients in the streets
because hospitals did not have enough beds to accommodate all of the injured. Hospital officials asked for blood
donations, doctors and paramedics.
Assistance has come from Britain, France, Japan, Spain, Italy and Switzerland, Algeria's foreign minister
said. They have sent search and rescue teams, in some cases including sniffer dogs.

First Term Final Exam (Nov 06)
The Amazon forest in Brazil covers five million square kilometres an area as big as Europe. It contains 1A of
the world's trees.
However the trees are disappearing. By the year 1974, !4 of the forest had already been cut down. In the
following year 1975,4% of the trees went. If the destruction of the forest continuous, there will be no forest by
the year 2020.
Scientists say that the disappearance of the trees is causing changes in the climate. In many countries there is
less snow and rain and in others there is too much water.
What will happen if the Amazon forest is cut down? Two things may happen: there will be serious effects on the
world's climate and the air that we breathe will contain less oxygen.
Why is this? Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and give out oxygen. The trees of the Amazon are very
active as they provide 50% of the world's annual oxygen.
If we lose the tropical forests, the air will contain less oxygen and more carbon dioxide, the temperature will
rise and with less oxygen in the air, it will become difficult to breathe.
Scientists agree that if we destroy the Amazon forest, life on earth will become difficult and it may become
impossible.

Jules Verne was a Frenchman who was born in 1828. He was neither an inventor nor a scientist, but he read
great many scientific books. He had a very strong imagination and he loved adventure although he did not have
many great adventures himself. He wrote a number of exciting books about the things which he thought that
scientists and inventors would one day be able to do. At that time, his stories seemed like fairy stories!
Many of Jules Vernes attempts to look into the future, however, were surprisingly accurate. For instance, one
book was called From Earth to the Moon. In this three men and a dog made a journey around the Moon. They did
this in a hollow ship fired from a gun. After going round the Moon, they returned to Earth and splashed down
into the sea not far from where they first real Moon travellers landed in July 1969, about a hundred years later!
Jules Vernes most famous book is Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. This book has been made into
a film. Perhaps you have seen it. In all his books Jules Verne used his scientific knowledge as well as his imagin-
ation in describing future inventions such as: the submarine or the space ship Sometimes he was wrong, of
course, but often the accuracy of his descriptions is very surprising.
Jules Verne died in 1905 when he was seventy-seven. Many years later, explorers really did go to the Moon
and one part of the Moon was given Jules Vernes name.

Floods have been and continue to be a great destructive natural danger facing our country. A
flood is an abnormally high stream flow mat overtops the natural or artificial banks of a stream.
Flooding is a natural characteristic of rivers. Flood plains are normally dry-land areas which act
as a natural reservoir and temporary channel far flood waters. If more quantity is generated than
the banks of a stream channel can accommodate, the water will overtop the stream banks and
spread over the flood plain causing social and economic disruption and damage to crops and
structures.
Floods can also form where there is no stream, as for example, when abnormally heavy
precipitation falls on flat terrain at such a rate that the soil cannot absorb the water or the water
cannot run off as fast as it falls.
