‘Subject: Back Pressure Limits for Crosby H Series Safety Valve Products
The purpose of this ADVISOR is communicate a new design capability specific to Crosby H
Series safety valves with open bonnet construction and their application relative to
maximum allowable back pressure limits,
Built-up back pressure is defined as the static back pressure existing at the valve outlet as a
result of flow through the discharge piping system while the valve is open and relieving,
Excessive back pressure may, in some cases, have a detrimental affect on safety valve
performance. For ths reason, all applications need to be carefully reviewed for potential
back pressure effects and in some cases, additional Engineering evaluation may be
required. Since the majority of Crosby H Series safety valve designs are typically of open
bonnet design, they are not suitable for applications involving superimposed back pressure.
When equipped with a standard Crosby EFS drip pan elbow type discharge system
(reference Catalog CROMC-0295, page 50), vent stack pressure normally does not affect H
Series valve performance. Due to the shock wave which occurs at the elbow outlet in this
type of system, the downstream vent stack pressure is effectively blocked from influencing
the vaive's performance. As a result, built-up back pressure is generally not a concern for
this type of discharge system.
Closed discharge systems (frequently encountered when outlet silencers or mufflers are
utilized) present an entirely different circumstance relative to allowable back pressure.
{fa closed type system is employed, our Engineering position traditionally has been to
advise customers the built-up back pressure should not be allowed to exceed 10-15% of the
valve's inlet pressure, depending on the specific H Series design.
However, in March 2009, Stafford Engineering completed an extensive test program that
has resulted in an extended capability to address applications for open bonnet H Series
safety valves with built-up back pressure conditions up to 27.5% of the valve's inlet
pressure,This higher capability specifically pertains to all open bonnet Crosby style HCI, HE, HSJ and
HL products.
For your information, please refer to the table below for a comparsion versus the back
pressure capabilities of various Consolidated safety valve designs:
"Back Pressure Limit Back Pressure Limit
Crosby ‘% of Set Pressure Consolidated ‘% of Set Pressure
HL 27.5% 1811 20%
HsJ 27.5% 2700 25%
HCI 27.5% 41700 72700 25%
HE 27.5% 2700 25% i
The extended back pressure capabilities for Crosby H Series safety valves will be included
in the next revision of catalog CROMC-0295,
Please note style HSJ with closed bonnets, including HSJ-DOW for Dowtherm service and
other heat transfer fluids are excluded from the scope of this communication.
